Subject: Review: Songs of Ireland - who are these guys? From: Rex Date: 10 Mar 25 - 03:01 PM I was given a cassette tape back in the 80's with some great renditions of Irish songs. I never knew who they were. The recording shows up now on these CDs. It's the same guys, even down to the bottle caps clinking on the bar. But still there is no mention of who they are. Can anyone tell me who they are? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMTUuSCd0xg&list=OLAK5uy_no01mPS5G5gZd4Feq6jDllSIIYVYfiLUY&index=3 |

Subject: RE: Review: Songs of Ireland - who are these guys? From: Helen Date: 10 Mar 25 - 04:18 PM I just did a search on youtube for The Studio Group, and I suspect that it is one of those record companies which make studio copies of well known songs and music and sell the albums cheaply. The Studio Group could indicate that the musicians are session or studio musicians instead of the original artists. I was given a harp CD which had belonged to an older lady, now passed away. I started a thread here to try to find more information: Folk harper on Shamrock Singers CD? It is called Celtic Folk Harp and it has no identifying information about the harpist even though the music is beautifully and professionally performed. I finally, after a lot of internet sleuthing, found a CD by the well known British harpist named Hugh Webb and when I compared the tunes he plays to the same tracks on my CD I knew that it was his work. I still get annoyed that such a great musician should have his work distributed for profit but he is not credited on the CD. My theory is that he was given a paid assignment and agreed to the absence of credit to his work. I suspect the same situation might apply to the CD you are trying to find out about. |

Subject: RE: Review: Songs of Ireland - who are these guys? From: GUEST,Phil d'Conch Date: 10 Mar 25 - 07:34 PM Rex: Is your 80s cassette a factory release (Canadian by any chance?) or a home dub? Rights on the yTube CD have since been scooped up by digital-funding.com. Studio Group, Inc. was a semi-shady Hollywood ASCAP publisher. The tracks were likely connected to a movie/TV score/soundtrack/publisher somewhere up the line. |

From: GUEST,Phil d'Conch Date: 10 Mar 25 - 08:26 PM Whelp, so far I have: The Charmers The Jolly Beggarmen The Shamrocks Singers The Studio Group ...and counting, all doing the exact same yTube take on Monto. Any of them sound familiar? And usually lurking in the wings somewheres: Passport International Entertainment, LLC. 10520 Magnolia Boulevard North Hollywood, CA 91601 U.S.A. Owner of record was: Jeanette Pugliese (daughter of Turner Classics producer Dante J. Pugliese.) |

Subject: RE: Review: Songs of Ireland - who are these guys? From: Helen Date: 10 Mar 25 - 09:14 PM Phil, the Celtic Harp CD was attributed to The Shamrocks Singers, even though all tracks on the CD are harp solo instrumentals with no singing. |

Subject: RE: Review: Songs of Ireland - who are these guys? From: GUEST,Phil d'Conch Date: 10 Mar 25 - 10:55 PM Helen: Yup, a lot of crossover to the other thread. But so far, The Jolly Beggarmen are the only ones with a vinyl/cassette era discography. On Discogs: 20 Great Irish Drinking Songs, Id Records: IDLP 2002, Ireland, 1975 |

Subject: RE: Review: Songs of Ireland - who are these guys? From: Rex Date: 11 Mar 25 - 10:56 AM Thanks to everyone. The cassette given me was just a home made copy. Up to now I couldn't even be sure it was a professional recording apart from the obvious quality. I looked up The Jolly Beggarmen. It is the same recording. Another site lists The Jolly Beggarmen as: Tommy Jenkinson: Vocals & Mandolin Charlie Clarke: Vocals & Mandolin Joe White: Vocals & Guitar Johnny Carroll: Banjo, Vocals, Guitar & Tin Whistle Produced and Engineered by Paul Waldron at Trend Studios, Dublin. So we know who they are and that they were in Dublin. I will follow up on this but it is thanks to you that I am this far. |
