Dear 'GUEST with etc., etc.,

If you want to play 'let's slap it on the table and see who's got the best,' I suggest that you put the guitar down at your side and pull the dog into your lap.

The people here on the Mudcat don't play the kind of games you seem to want to engage in. Go play in another sandbox and take your dog and your guitar with you.

The reason I asked this question, is that I have heard several of the so-called ''revered and respected'' folkies from this website and some of their recorded material (and without mentioning names nor would I) I personally was not impressed. But I was very impressed with Rick Fielding - no argument there.

I am interested in finding out if there are indeed other players on this site on par with Mr. Fielding's talents.

(As for the others that I did listen to, that everyone seems to revere), I have concluded that the standards here must be pretty low. Then again those standards may be dictated by the ears of non-musicians.

I'm getting a bit suspicious about all these "who's the best this?" and "who's the best that?" started by people signing in as GUEST something or other (eg GUEST OF HONOUR and "GUEST,With Guitar on Lap and Dog At Side". It doesn't take a lot of effort to sign up to this site. I getbthe feeling someone's playing silly buggers, and seeing how many futile threads they can start.

Well, I'd like to hear from anybody who claims to have heard ALL the pickers on the Mudcat!!!

Who knows what wonderful musicians are lurking behind those screen names? There's some incredible talent in this place and almost as many kinds of musical talent as there are members. F'r instance, Roger in Baltimore plays well, but the thing that makes his music such a treat is the way his singing and picking and whole self express the blues. Wonderful music, wonderful playing but I don't think of it (maybe I'm wrong, Roger ... ) as wonderful "picking."

I just picked on RiB at random, you should excuse the pun. Don't know all the other pickers but have heard lots of damn good ones.

Umm, It occurs to me that "GUEST, w.g.o.l.a.d.a.s." has actually offered up a pretty good bullsh*t topic (so much for the obscenity police); who do you know of on here who's a really good picker? Or player, for that matter? I.e., you can play really well and still not be a showy picker. Have to agree, Rick Fielding is pretty incredible.

Well, I know I don't number among the BEST. I probably fit in with the WORST, but dammit, I enjoy my efforts, and each time I pluck a melody or strum a tune I get a little better I think. To me, it's not how good am I, but how much do I enjoy making music....

Well, I definitely ain't me. If you doubt my words, then just look at the photo of me that Bert posted in the "What's a Sheidholt" thread, and tell me how, with hands like those I could Ever be any good as a guitar player.

Cheers

Bugsy

I haven't heard everyone on the forum, but I've heard some excellent pickers here. I think I'd have to give the nod to Rick Fielding. Yeah, he's a friend, but he plays a lot of styles extremely and also plays a lot of instruments extremely well and I'd say that pretty well sums it up.

From another guest. Sorry to sound negative, but though I have my opinions, I am not going to express them here. It is too much like voting for which of your children you like best.
