Since we had such wonderful success with the first Song Challenge, I'm issuing another one! That's right, boys and girls, get out your pens and pencils for another test of your ingenuity --

This challenge requires you to go to 'Caitrin's Cookie Recipe' thread -- click here -- and write a song describing these inebriating, sinful, hallucinogenic cookies and their effect on the consumer/imbiber! Go on, take one, they're free!!

Because she didn't use enough Kahlua!

Now Caitrin is a lively lass
And at cooking she is great
In fact, her food's so fine and grand
It's the wonder of the State!

She's known for cakes and goodies
And other tasty treats
She'll even cook some Slovak food
And make sure everyone eats!

But Caitrin's got these cookies--
Oh, how should I begin?
The taste it is so gosh-darned good
With just one bite--you'll grin.

Because her secret recipe
Contains a secret drop
Of some Hawaiian Kahlua
That's sure to make you hop!

Now something alcoholic
Isn't something you often see
As ingredients in cookies
But they sure taste good to me!

And oh, the strange reactions
Her cookies have had on
The populace in general
I now will speak upon

These cookies have been know to warm
The worst curmudgeon's heart
And folks with tempers flaming rage
Calm feelings do impart.

They could melt the ice on 10th Street
Make NC summers humidity-free
And cause marauding hurricanes
Turn back out into the sea!

Rising waters sink back down
When her cookies are around
And there's are reliable rumour
They've broke the speed of sound!

So you can see these cookies
Are quite extraordinary--
And the word of advice I give to you
Is make some now, and hurry!

Ta Da! --Mbo

De Kahlua Cookie Blues

Well I woke up dis mornin
Lawd I felt jus like a bum
I had gained 7 1/2 pounds
De right side of my brain was numb
I looked down at de carpet, it was covered up wit cookie crumbs

Kahlua cookie Blues
Jus like a drunkard in de bar
Lawd I ate so many cookies
I couldn't even drive my car

I went and found de Preacher
and I fell down on my knees
I found him in de vestibule
eatin crackers wine and cheese
When I give him my confession, he jus said "pass de cookies please"

Kahlua cookie Blues
Jus like a drunkard in de bar
No matter how I tries
Can't keep my hand from out de jar

Got a real bad cookie jones
And I'm afraid I've sealed my fate
I eats em by de handfull
I buys em by de crate
When I finishes all my cookies, I snorts de crumbs from off my plate

Kahlua cookie Blues
Jus like a drunkard in de bar
Your sign "will work for cookies"
Tells people jus how bad you are

I was down in Caitrin's kitchen,
On the corner by the square The food was good as usual,
And the usual crowd was there

On my left stood Lonesome EJ
His eyes were bloodshot red
He turned to the crowd beside him
These were the very words he said

"Eat 'em down, eat 'em down, them cookies
Wherever they may be
You can search this wide world over
Such cookies you will never see"

"I went down to Caitrin's kitchen
I saw them cookies there
Laid out on a long white table
Such smell, such taste, such fare"

"When I die please bury me
I'll smell much less that way
Put a couple of cookies in my pocket
Eat the rest yourselves and pray"

"I want six Mudcatters for my pallbearers
A few more to sing me a song
Put a folk band on my hearse wagon
To raise consciousness as we roll along"

"Now that you've heard my story
Some cookies I'll have more
They're so filled up with Kahlua
You'll find me on the floor"

Regards
Chris

I'm just astounded!! Chris, LEJ and Mbo -- all equally wonderful and up to the task -- and may I say 'extremely tasteful' as well (groan -- but I just couldn't help it!). And to think this challenge has been out for less than 12 hours!

Does anyone else have a cookie song lurking under their hat? Well, mary-tyler-moore that sucker and let's hear it! The more the merrier (and the more cookies for everyone!).

To the tune of "The Rocky Road to Dublin". NB for those living outside of Ireland and the UK, "cookies" are known in these quarters as biscuits (bikkies). Cigarettes are referred to as fags. Camp is a weird coffee/chicory syrup which can be used to make beverages which taste something like coffee.

Says Pat me to me one day "Michael would you risk it?"
"Risk what" I replied "The baking of a biscuit"
"Where are the instructions?" He fumbled in his jacket
Caitrin's Cookie Dough on the back of a fag packet
Searched the oul foodstore, got all of the makings
Except for the Kahlua - an easy boy for faking
A bottle or two of Camp and a jug of Mayo poitín
And we set out to make bikkies a la Caitrin

CHORUS
1-2-3-4-5
Beat and stir the batter
The finest biscuits known
To man are a Mudcatter's
Whack-fol-lal-de-da

"There's a helluva lot to beat" Says Mick "No fear, I'll fix 'er"
And siphons off the batter to a cement-mixer
Made a lot of noise but saved a lot of labour
Left us more inclined to appreciate the flavour
Then onto baking sheets Mick poured out the mixture
With the sweet scent of poitín the air was shortly thick, sir
So ravenous was I, hardly fit for waiting
Thinking of the time, those bikkies I'd be eating

CHORUS
When the bikkies cooled, Mick says "Shall we try one?"
"Try away" says I, reaching out for my one
An epiphany, what a revelation
Mick and I had made a culinary sensation
Every bite a joy, every nibble better
Than the one before, ecstasy unfettered
Lord how we indulged, bikkie after bikkie
Till the batch was done and feeling slightly sicky

CHORUS

They were Better Going Down Crisp Crispofferson

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
with no way to hold my gut that didn't hurt;
It wasn't the tequila
'twas the cookies that I had for my desert
I had icing on my Dockers and mys shoes
An found chocolate chips covering my shirt
I took asperin and tylenol
and stumbled to the bathroom for relief.

I'd been ot the night before
with Caitrin and some Catters who were pickin';
And I say some kid gettin drunk
Clinging to the bowl that he was lickin
I thought that I would be OK until some troll went and called me chicken
Then I put some cookies in my mouth and
that is how I went and came to grief

{soc} Now I'm tossing up my cookies, Yes I'm talking to the John
There's a price to pay on Sunday, When you tie one on
And there's nothin' worse than barfin' Its such a mournful sound
Now I'm tossin up my cookies and they were so much better going down
{eoc}

At the mall I saw a daddy with a chubby little girl and he was buying
Cookies for them both but he should have bought the burgers that were frying
Then I headed back for home, to my john, this diarrhea sure is trying.
And it echoed through the plumbing and my arse felt like I'd passed a coral reef

Ew! Jack, that was really... um... gutsy. ;^)

Here's a song based on the entire "Caitrin's Cookie Recipe" thread, complete with Sorcha's variation on the recipe and Liz the Squeak's Easter-biscuit-like cakes...

HAVE SOME KAHLUA (mmm), DO!
(Tune: "Have Some Madeira, M'Dear")

Caitrin's sung, to be sure, to the 'Catters advice:
"Oh, beware of the sweet treats you've seen
That are sold: so beguiling, arranged very nice-
-ly, but tastelessly bad they have been."
Then she shyly unveiled her own cookies. They'd chat;
They knew this convection's advanced
And she said as they hastened to eat, "These are fat,
They're fine; by the bar they're enhanced.

"Have some Kahlua (mmm), do! You'll really have something to chew.
I'm just trying to tempt you; it wouldn't be right
To leave out the spirits from each fudgy bite!
Have some Kahlua (mmm), do! It's nicer to eat than to brew.
I don't care if ev'ryone grows a bit stout,
For portly's just fine when your pants are let out
Some, simply because of the cookies I tout
So have some Kahlua (mmm), do!"

Unaware all the while of the cake-with-such-class
And the great cookie rave, Sorcha copes.
She lowers decanter and bottle and glass
Of liquor in batter, and mopes.
She baked it, it stank; down the drain it was slid.
She promptly prepared it again,
Trying Bailey's. She poured it in just one more batch....
It was buttery gold and weight gain!

"Have some with Bailey's, y'whale! I bought a big bottle on sale
And once it's been added, although it ain't cheap,
It polishes up the mix; go bake a heap!
Have some with Bailey's, y'whale! You'll feel that from Ireland you hail.
Now if you don't grin with a song in your breast,
I'll heave all these cookies and make a new test
Batch with the whole bottle's worth – they'll be the best!
So have some with Bailey's, y'whale!"

Then there flashed through their minds what the Squeak had once said
With a biscuit of olde on her breath:
"Oh my, you all should cook with a wine that's not red
To prepare for your plate ere your death
With nutmeg and raisin and cinnamon nigh,
Splashed, sprinkled, until it doth pour
In the batter that heavenly liquor so high
On MY list... and a dash or two more:

"Have some Madeira (mmm), dear, and out from the oven there's cheer
With a tre-mendous cake that you'd find at a Faire
As knights fight and fake death while the fool sings an air.
Have some Madeira (mmm), dear! For Easter, this treat has no peer!
Until your next baking with that rich brown-red
Kahlua and choc'late chips, may you be fed
The lovely confection of which I have said,
'Have some Madeira (mmm), dear!' "

The original song for this is a teriffic performance piece by Lou, who has somehow mastered the AMAZINGLY complex rhythm for this song. I hope I haven't butchered it too badly with my ode to Catrin's cookies and the Mudcat cafe! BTW - I like MY cookies with a tad extra Kahlua!

I imagined Catrin trying to type this recipe for Aine while she was multi-tasking with TOO many open chat lines on her computer...

CATRIN'S COOKIES
Tune: Orange Cocoa Cake (Lou & Peter Berryman)
New words by Al Boyce 8/17/2001

Hello Aine this is me. Say I found that recipe
For Catrin's Cookies, so dear Aine get a pencil quick because
Can you believe ICQ crashed? Max was on, Mudcat is up
The gang's online, yes all of them - they're in Mudcat Cafe!

One pound of light-brown brown sugar, Twelve ounces Milk Ghirardelli choc'late
Five cups of chunked up walnuts, One pound of softened butter, Three half-
Cups sugar, three half-teaspoons salt. Two tablespoons vanilla, One and
One half teaspoons baking soda 'Scuze me just a sec...

... Check the FAQ first...
Aine, one half cup or so of Kahlua,
Six cups of Robin Hood unsifted...
...Perma-Thread, top of the page!
Unsifted general purpose...
...Amos! I got your PM!

Six cups of Robin Hood unsifted general purpose flour, Aine
There I finally got it out!

Please excuse me, while I talk to Aine...

Aine, one more half-a-cup of...
... Sorcha, what's the matter dear?
Coffee Liquor Aine...
... Fielding! Don't FLAME Hammond! That's uncalled for!
... That's OK, Joe
Aine, three more tablespoons of Kahlua or Tia Marie
... Oh, ScottyG - what has happened now?

... Now don't worry Scott' - it's only just an oversight. Someone...
... Pinetop, write ScottG an email!
Aine, maybe...

Aine, maybe we should...
... AMERGIN! Where've you been all evening?
... Wolfgang - I will be right there, but...
...'Scuze me just a sec!

(DOUBLE-TIME:)

Really gotta go, An', d'ja get an ISP?, Are ya
Gonna switch to Mudcat with the help of Max and Pene? Well...
Little Hawk and I are gonna write a big response to Tiger's
Note about the CAPSLOCK Nazis (A Pandora's Box, that!)

Then at the Mudcat Concert in the PalTalk room
Later on this evening -
... Seamus? Seamus isn't it this evening?
... Is it Naemanson that will be playing at the show? I
Remember now it's Skipper Jack.

Trapper can't go. There's a brewfest in the bar for all the
Pickers with Pils. Well you know he's gotta go to that an'
Dorrie's gonna show up and if Ickle Dorrit's present after
That we have to reconnoiter over at the chat room...

Good point. I've decided (for me) that Aine's kudos for going back to PAST challenges is totally optional - not essential. I'd rather have her spend her time tending to current and future challenges than to have her burn out patting us on the back for "closed" challenges.

How about it the rest of you "Catch-uppers" - shall we agree to cut Aine some slack?

I dunno.... I still like having her reviews of what we've done (it's nice to have her feedback!). And all those songs should go SOMEWHERE on the Song Challenge! pages eventually; it seems unfair to the newer writers not to have their work up there with everyone else's.

In the final analysis, Áine's the one who'll decide what, when and whether to award. But if she decides to sit back and enjoy reading our past-Challenge! entries at her leisure, I don't mind waiting (anymore!) for the Chips to fall as they may.

P.S. – Besides, Áine has told us, again and again, that past Challenge!s are NEVER "closed", and that we're free to submit songs to any of them at any time. I didn't mean to bring a deluge of catcher-uppers upon her by embarking on my own personal quest to write a song for each, but she never said one word to discourage me from questing.

I kinda had the impression that she LIKED reading this stuff... it's just that, right now, there's more of it than usual. I think that this, too, shall pass... ...and come again, in waves, no doubt.

I've Been Working on the Cookies
Tune: I've been working on the railroad

I've been workin' on the cookies
All the live-long day
I've been workin' on the cookies
And I can't see straight, no way

Can't you smell the cookies bakin'
Risin' so beautiful and warm
Can't you hear the 'Catters singing,
"Caitrin's true to form!"

Caitrin where's the dough?
Caitrin where's the dough?
Caitrin, where's the dough you for-or-ormed?
Caitrin where's the dough?
Caitrin where's the dough?
Caitrin' where's the dough you formed?

Someone's in the kitchen with Caitrin
Someone's in the kitchen, I know-wo-wo-woe
Someone's in the kitchen with Caiiiiii-trin
Eatin' all the raw, raw dough

Singin' fee fye, um, fee,
Um, fiddle-ee shit I can' remember
That's some good dough, though.
Holy Cripes that's -- whoa!
What time is it?
