Subject: Freedom Trail/Ain't Gonna Let Nobody
From: Jeri
Date: 02 Feb 00 - 06:40 PM

I read MaryMac's quote of the day for Black History Month and it prompted me to look for the words to this song. Hard to believe they arent' in the DT. (Easier to believe I just can't find them.) So does anyone have a version of this?

Of course, maybe it isn't in the DT because you just sort of add things or people you ain't gonna let turn you round? ...like segregation, Governor Wallace, or hairy foxes, for instance.

Ain't gonna let nobody, lord
Turn me round, turn me round, turn me round
Ain't gonna let nobody, lord
Turn me round
I'm gonna keep on a-walkin
Keep on a talkin
Marchin' down the freedom trail.

I might have known, when I went looking for this at Mudcat, that Jeri had thought Of it once as well.

It's sure on MY mind today. *G*

I remember it being sung at a co-counseling workshop, I think a women's empowerment one. Years ago. I think I had first heard it on a Joan Baez recording-- gosh maybe I TAUGHT it at the workshop instead of learning it! Damn CRS!

Anyway it's one of those that engenders floating verses, and that would be one reason you would not find it in a collection. It's probably a spiritual.

Here is what I recall of it, and my floating verses du jour. (I think they will make a lot of sense, to people who actually KNOW me.)

AIN'T GONNA LET NOBODY TURN ME AROUND

Ain't gonna let nobody
Turn me around, turn me around, turn me around!
Ain't gonna let nobody turn me around!
Keep on a-walkin', keep on a-talkin',
Gonna build a brand-new world.

SH

Now for floaters, you can vary it one way by changing just the first line:

Ain't gona let no politicians...

Ain't gonna let no sillyass flamers...

Ain't gonna let no old bad memories....

Ain't gonna let no insecurities...

Ain't gonna let no tired body go and...

Ain't gonna let no danged CRS...

And then you can also vary it by changing the fourth and/or fifth lines:

Keep on a-thinkin', keep on a-singin',
Gonna write a brand-new song....

Well. What I had been thinking was, that since I learned it so long ago, it seems to have reflected and possibly strengthened my persistence a bit. *G* This also will make a lot of sense, to people who actually KNOW me.

~Susan

Wow--now I'll have to hunt up whatever I made a qoute of the day a year and a half ago! I can also put in some lyrics for the above later, when I'm writing from home. Let me get back to ya'll later.

Susan, I used to do co-counseling too, years ago. That's where, of course, that Peter Blood got his sunny and optimistic view of the world that he expressed in his song choices in Rise Up Singing. In RUS's predecessor, Winds of the People, he also changed LOTS of lyrics to make them more positive and PC, to the dismay of trad-types.

Big song in the 50's-60's during the freedom marches. See www.vi.uh.edu/pages/buzzmat/aintgonna.html. Ain't gonna let injustice..., oppression..., segregation..., jail cells..., violence..., nobody...I don't know if this song goes back any further than the 50's. Its importance has been discussed in several papers, but none cites any origin.

Huh. Dang, MaryMac!

WOP did become RUS. Given the acronym, good choice! *G*

How interesting that at least one original version is addressed to "YOU." An soNg of encouragement, not a song of defiance. Hmmmmmm......

And this one has chorus/verses, too.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DON'T YOU LET NOBODY TURN YOU AROUND
Tradtional Spiritual

CHO:
Don't you let nobody turn you aroun',
Turn you aroun', turn you aroun',
Don't you let nobody turn you aroun',
Keep the straight an' the narrow way.

VERSES:
I was at the river of Jordan,
Baptism was begun,
John baptized the multitude,
But he sprinkled nary a one.

The baptis' they go by water,
The methodes' go by lan',
But when they get to heaven
They'll shake each other's han'.

You may be a good baptis'
An' a good methodes' as well,
But if you ain't the pure in heart
Yo' soul is boun' for hell.

here's my version for teaching beginner guitar:

'Don't You Let Nobody Turn You Around...' -       Em/D or Am/G
....just keep on a-strummin', keep on a-singin',
don't lay the guitar down.

2. Don't you let those double negatives turn you around...
3. Don't you let those sore fingers turn you around...
4. Don't you let those TV idols turn you around...

Another verse I've heard starts, "Ain't gonna let homophobia . . ."
