Quite right about the Dylan version, not for we "purists"!!

We sing the song in D as per Dan Milners version. Full "Scouse" version if you want the words, just let me know

Best wishes

Waxies

Oops -- ye're quite right about the version. Mexico is part of Dylan's re-write. Doesn't appear in the trad version.

I think over the years I had melded them in my spongy brain.

I must confess I'm amazed to see the words above used in connection with "The Leaving of Liverpool." This song was only ever collected once from tradition and there were no verses about Mexico in that text. Isn't the verse above from the Bob Dylan song in which he appropriated the "Liverpool" melody?

Anyway, here are the chords I use and first verse as collected by Bill Doerflinger from Dick Maitland.

D~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~G~~~~~~~D~~~~
Farewell to Prince's landing stage
D~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A7~~
River Mersey, fare you well
A7~~~D~~~~~~~~~~~~~G~~~~D
I am bound for California,
D~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A7~~~~~~~~~D~~~
It's a place I know right well.

D~~~~A~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~G~~~~~~~~D~~~
So fare the well, my own true love
D~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A~~
And when I return united we will be;
A~~~~~~~~~~~~D~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~G~~~~~~~D~
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
D~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~A7~~~~~~~D~~~
But my darling when I think on you.

All the best, Dan Milner

amos: i don't think that formatted exactly as you might have hoped.

this is how i do the song (chord changes fall on the syllable immediately following):

(C)Farewell to (C7)thee, my (F)own true (C)love
I am sailing in the (F)first hours of the (G)morn
I am (C)bound for the (C7)coast of (F)Mexi(C)co,
Or per(F)haps twill be the (G)bay of Cali(C)forn'.

So (G)fare thee well, my (F)own true (C)love
And when I return u(F)nited we will (G)be;
It's not the (C)leaving of (C7)Liverpool that (F)grieves (C)me
But my darlin' (G)when I think of (C)thee.

aka:
C C7 G C
C F G -
C C7 G C
C G C -

G - F C
C F G -
C C7 G C
C G C -

From memory, but should serve:

C~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~F~~~~~~~~~
Farewell to thee, my own true love
C~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~F~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~G
I am sailing in the first hours of the morn
C~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~F
I am bound for the coast of Mexico,
C~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~F~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~G
Or perhaps twill be the bay of Californ'.

C~~~~F~~~~~~~G~~~~~~~F~~~~~~~~~~~G So fare the well, my own true love
C~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~F~~~~~~~~~~~~~G
And when I return united we will be;
C~~~~~~~~~~~~~C~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~F~~~~~~~
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
C~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Dm~~~F~~~~~~G~~~~~~~~C
But my darlin' when I think of thee.

You may need to slide these around a little, and the words are not guaranteed pure. I'm not guaranteed pure my own self, either, but these will get you through.

Any chords for guitar for The Leaving of Liverpool for the husband please? Listening to Gaelic Storms version, what a great tune! Gotta learn that one too. Nancy
