My cheapest guitar is worth more than my car... All three together cost more than every car I've owned in my life...

And I'm proud of that fact...

I refuse to contribute to your addiction. From now on, I only send Rhapsody files, no midis!

And yes, I wait til after Winfield to plan the next one, mostly because when you're in the middle of one Winfield, there just ain't no plannin' to be done!

Friends - I am a musicalholic. it has been 1 year 5 months and 16 days since I stood here and first confessed this.

AND IT'S WORSE THEN EVER!

I have progressed (regressed? devolved?) into a MudCatMusicalholic. I put line breaks into my lyrics even when writing them by hand! I refuse to learn new tunes until someone sends them to me in miditext or abc format. I am beginning to think of 18th century parlour songs as "That new pop music"

HELP ME!

Hi, my name is Jim, and I'm a Musicoholic. I guess I'm really under the influence. I forgot to put line breaks in when I filled out the questionaire.
Lately I've been obsessed with Bob Wills' San Antonio Rose. I play it every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at Farmer's Market. I even taught the guitar chords to a friend of mine last Saturday afternoon. And I actually sang it for him, until he had it down. Worse, I'm not even ashamed I did it.

Wow - I can't be a fully-fledged musicoholic, I can answer no to 26, 27 and 28. And half of 25, since we bought our first house (no contest as to whether the instruments are worth more than the car, though). I thought I could answer no to 23 as well, but then I remembered the weekly practise for the company band.

...Yes...No 1.__X__ ____ Do you ever indulge heavily when you are disappointed, under pressure or have had a quarrel with someone? 2._X___ ____ Can you handle more music now than when you first started to play? 3.____ _X___ Does your spouse or significant other resent your music? No, she thinks old-time music is just about chickens and mules. 4.__X__ ____ When playing with other people, do you try to get in few extra licks? Of course, I'm the fiddler. 5.__X__ ____ Do you sometimes feel uncomfortable when music is not available? You mean it could be unavailable? 6.__X__ ____ Are you in more of a hurry to get your first tune of the day than you used to be? 7.____ __X__ Do you sometimes feel a little guilty about your music? 8.____ __X__ Has a family member or close friend ever expressed concern or complained about your playing? 9._X___ ____ Do you avoid parties or gatherings where you can't play music? They;re always & without exception BORING. 10.__X__ ____ Do you sometimes have memory blackouts about tune names? Huh? You talkin' to me? 11._X___ ____ Do you often want to continue playing after your friends say they've had enough? 12.__X__ ____ Do you ever find yourself spending money on music that was budgeted for something else? Yeah, I recently spent money on instrument repair that was budgeted for something stupid like our vacation. 13._X___ ____ Do you usually have a reason for occasions when you play heavily? 14.____ __X__ Have you tried switching instruments or changing styles to control your music habit? No, I have successfully switched instruments & styles to make myself more marketable. 15.____ __X__ Have you sometimes failed to keep promises you made to yourself about controlling or cutting down on your playing? Why bother? Just keep on picking and singing. 16.____ __X__ Do you try to avoid family or close friends while you're playing? "I'll tune up my fiddle, I'll rosin my bow, And make myself welcome, Wherever I go." 17.__X__ ____ Do you think about music while you're at work? Of course! Music is synonymous with work. 18.____ __X__ Does your involvement in music create financial, work, school and/or family problems? No, just the opposite. 19.__X__ ____ Do you eat very little or irregularly while you are playing music? So I DON'T bother to tear down the pickin' circle from one week to the next--

So the stand-up bass IS permanently set up in the living room just in case one of us wants to pluck a quick run--

So I DO have three lap dulcimers, all tuned to a different key--

So the only time ANY of our instruments is in its case is when we load them in the van to go jam somewhere--

So we DO have more sets of new strings than we have silverware--

So we DO start planning for the Winfield Festival right after we get home from the last one--

SO WHAT????? Ya got a problem with that?

Lin (surly because it's still two days to our weekly jam and withdrawals are threatening...)

YES YES YES YES YES YES etc etc. But it's not better than sex, though I get a lot more music practice in. I can't even sit at my computer without having folk music playing, it's in the car, and if I'm sitting having a coffee I usually pick up some instrument. I take any chance I can at school to have a go. When i get home the first thing I do is have 5 minutes widdling on something. (you'd think I would be good with all the tiny bits of practice, but I'm still crap) I can't think of many things I'd rather do than listen to or play music. I take folk music on tapes when we go on holiday, I take then fishing. So I guess yes is the answer. Cheers Eric

Praise,

I don't have a photocopier - yet - but, believe me, you are not alone. And my computer is loaded up with midi files of music I would love to learn but rarely print out the music to actually play.

I've been thinking about Question 25: Is your instrument (or instruments) worth more than your car? More than your house?

That one stopped me in my tracks - had to do some mental sums, but it's all right. The instruments only add up to a third of the cost of the car (2nd hand, 10 years old - God help me if I had a flash new car & the instruments still cost a third of that.)

Question # 29: Do you have a photocopier at your home, and do you search all over the house for paper to feed it, and re-use the backs of scratch paper to run off one more song you don't even know just so you can put it in your binder (or in the pile on the hearth, or in your case, or...)?

Please say yes, I feel so alone.

I'm not addicted. I actually skipped going to a regular session last night (of course I was scheduled for a root canal at 8:00 this morning and figured a good night's sleep might help me survive that). Oh, one other thing: I did go to a different session in its place.

I've had a bit of a time feeding my Mudcat addiction lately, since my computer is back in the shop (it still is, which is why a. I'm posting from school and b. I'm getting messages from fellow addicts wondering if I'm still alive. I am still alive, but next time a dentist offers to do a root canal on me I can refuse, saying "Been there, done that. Sure I like to play, but I can take it or leave it. The pick I hide in my wallet is nothing but a convenience. Also, I don't play EVERY day. Sure, my father played, but he played WOODWINDS, and I stick mainly to the lighter stringed instruments. My wife doesn't usually get mad about picking up the discarded instruments when I can't pick them up myself. There's no point in hiding them from the neighbors: they've already been seen, (but you don't necessarily want to line them up in the front window, either). And it doesn't bother me that my kids are picking up some of my habits, er, tendencies. I'm sure they will be able to keep it under C#ontrol as I do- re- mi.

I don't think there's any future in treating this addiction because none of us have any money to pay for treatment, so few professionals will focus on this for long. So I don't think we need to fear being sent to some non-musical treatment center. Before long though the organized crime people may want to cut in on this as we have matched their tactic for hooking people on heroin-- the first one being free. Think of all the people we expose to this dangerous reality-threatening addiction when we go play those nursing homes, benefits, etc., or curl up around a good instrument in the park so innocently on a summer day. Me, I am going to lurk in the bushes and addict them from there the sneaky way, to ensure there will be more of Us than Them.

I'm sure glad they didn't call it Folkaholic, I might have gotten confused and actually thought I was havng sex!

I get fidgety and irritable when I just have to hang about making small talk, eating and drinking. That's not what parties are about. I don't want to get addicted to talking about nothing, eating & drinking. I like being addicted to music.
