One of the most important things for the health of any individual is the use of laughter. We are given the gift to be aware of humor and the ability to express it.
Through laughter and lightheartedness, the body can remain healthy. For those with challenging illnesses, humour can sometimes be the best medicine. Humor adds strength to relationships, brings joy to others and can dismantle an argument. Humor is so important to your well-being, that I suggest you do not go to sleep at night until you have experienced some laughter or joy during your day.

If my day isn't going so well, all I have to do is read a few Threads on the Mudcat and someone will have posted something so funny that it will lift my spirits.
I am very greatful for the humor around here.

Little Neo

Yo! Neo.

It's my birthday, as you probably know well! And I'm having a storming day, even if I am sailing a desk all day.

I agree with you concerning humour. It is basically a life tool that I use in my professional, personal and musical life. It is a potent medicine, especially so when directed at one's self, ie genuine humorous self effacement.

To quote Billy Joel, and qualifying it by staying within the confines of the Commandments, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints"

Little Neo, I have just had a weekend singing and a little drinking with lots of my friends. It was Jim McDonalds birthday and all his friends turned out to give him one hell of a "do".Friday night to sunday night, we slept on the floor of the pub....) We all laughed so much and enjoyed each others company that we are planning another birthday "do" soon. Laughter and love kind of go together. Jim McDonald can be in no doubt of the love of all his friends.

I dunno Jim, but I'da jumped right in and made best friends with him for that kinda party, if I had been in the neighborhood. Laughter, now, is the only real treasure there is sometimes...I cherish it, and even more those who inspire it in me -- most of whom are right around here, somewhere, plotting another bombshell thread to split my gut over...long live the Cat and all its kittens.

Some times ya gotta laugh to keep from cryin'. Watch a kitten or a very small child or a puppy at play. You'll laugh. And it will help to clear away the cobwebs of routine.

My first wife passed away in 1992 after a seven year battle with brain cancer. She used humor both as a coping mechanism and to put others at ease. She would cause peoples' jaws to drop with lines such as "Anybody with half a brain can see ...." or "I needed that like a hole in the head." When people saw that she could laugh about her own infirmities, they were able to relax and be themselves without worrying about stepping on toes.

Thanks, LilNeo, wise words behind that veil of innocence:-) My day wouldn't be compleat if I couldn't find something to laugh at or with. My pets are a constant source of hilarity, can't help but laugh.

Saw my first robin yesterday, too!

Robin is the bird that represents new growth in all areas of your life. The cheery, rolling trill of it's song reflects a need to sing your own song forth if you will for new growth.

There have been studies that prove the open plan office that has a joker in it produces more work and less days sick than those silent cube farms that segregate everyone from everything.

And after 8 months at home with the Teletubbies for company, I really appreciate our office joker - even if there is no-one else there who remembers the Goons shows or Monty Python the first time around...... Hell, one of them hasn't even heard of Blackadder - boy, has HE got an education to catch up on!!

Thanks, Little Neo. You're right, she was an inspiration to many, including me. The experience of going through that with her has also prepared me for the rest of my life. My new wife Bonnie is amazed at how I can face just about every problem with equanimity. My perspective is that if nobody's dying, then there's no reason to panic. If somebody is dying, then panicking won't do any good anyway, so why bother? The main lesson applicable in this thread is that humor beats the sh*t out of depression. I can also testify that music can help you survive anything. It's an escape that doesn't give you a hangover, although sore fingers or hoarseness are a distinct risk *BG*.

One of my favorite movie scenes of all time is from Mary Poppins when she and the character played by Ed Wynn and the children have floated upwards as they sing, "I LOVE TO LAUGH". I always laugh aloud, regardless of the number of times I've seen that. Now hear the kicker, I love someone who always makes me laugh but live with someone who rarely makes me laugh. Isn't that a laugh?
