You ask the author's permission. It's the same procedure as writing to Santa Claus, put the request on a piece of paper, and let it fly up the chimney.

are you talking an old song, i mean an "olde" song? like public domain? i have a lot of experience with that. or are you talking a more contemporary song?

Treat it with respect: bear in mind that things were different when it was made.  Try to find out how it usedto be played; then you can re-make it in a way that works now, without insulting it by re-interpreting it in ignorance.
