Subject: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 07 Mar 00 - 02:41 AM Again, I apologise about the nature of this thread...definitely NOT Music related....
But I wanted to pass this info I received onto my Mudcat friends in North America....(I didn't come up with this/compose this...but if it will work, I think it's a good idea.)
Gas Out
Last year on April 30, 1999, a gas out was staged across Canada and the U.S. to bring the price of gas down, and it worked. It's time to do something about it again. |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Liz the Squeak Date: 07 Mar 00 - 03:40 AM If I were there, I'd join in - here in the UK, we are facing the cost rising to £4.00 a gallon - don't know the exact exchange rate, but that is getting on for $8.00, the full tank of gas (petrol) I bought last night practically doubled the value of my car! It cost me 77pence a litre, about $1.20 for a LITRE. If only we could encourage the same here... LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 07 Mar 00 - 04:15 AM Liz, copy the Gas Out portion of the above, edit it and start sending it to anyone in the UK....might get results! It's just a thought... I'm in Southern California and the gas prices have snuck up to $1.50 a gallon....but that is "cheap" compared to the price you mentioned! Mary |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: GMT Date: 07 Mar 00 - 04:19 AM Yeah Liz, it cost me £36 sterling to fill my tank yesterday. 80 per cent of our fuel prices over here are tax we pay to our beloved government. Gary |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Lady McMoo Date: 07 Mar 00 - 04:46 AM Leaving the governments and their wretched taxes out of it for a minute, may I venture the (undoubtedly unpopular) view that petrol should NOT be cheaper! Cars the world over, and especially in the USA, are a massive contributor to pollution, global warming and illness. While I am not so extreme as to be totally anti-car, we would all do better to use or feet, a bicycle or public transport where we can, especially in towns or cities or where good public systems exist, instead of jumping in our cars for a five minute trip down the road. |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Troll Date: 07 Mar 00 - 07:29 AM This idea is not going to do one damn thing to hit the oil industry in the pocketbook. If you gas up before or after the dates for the gas-out, they still get their money and that is ALL they care about. A better way would be to organize locally with car-pools and/or alternative means of transportation. This MIGHT seriously affect profits enough to make them take notice, but to fill up before or after does nothing! Europeans who have never been to America simply have no concept of the distances involved in doing most things here. A car is somewhat of a necessity. While I agree that alternative transport should be used whenever possible, a great deal of the time it is either not available or not practical. By the bye, a cursory search reveals no gas-out on Apr.30 '99 and I don't remember one. Could someone with greater research skills than mine look into this please? troll |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Lady McMoo Date: 07 Mar 00 - 07:46 AM Dear troll, I understand of course that the car is a definite necessity where distance or lack of efficient public transport is a problem (I have been to the USA many times as well!). My point, however, is easily demonstrated by the traffic jams in and out of most cities in the world every morning and evening. Most of those cars carry a single person. All the best, mcmoo |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Jeri Date: 07 Mar 00 - 08:42 AM Look Here A basic summary (in my view) of what's there would be something like: 1. If you don't buy gas for 3 days then buy it the fourth, you haven't had any effect. You think oil cartels will notice if the little guys sell the gas on Mon instead of Fri, Sat, and Sun? They've already sold it. 2. If you're pissed off about prices, why not hurt the guy at your local gas station who has already purchased the gas? It's the good old "We can't get to the people responsible, let's just beat up somebody" philosophy. 3. People in North America are already getting cheaper gas than people in other non-oil-exporting places. The only effective thing would be to use less gas - not for 3 days, but for good. |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Gary T Date: 07 Mar 00 - 09:20 AM I'm afraid I see this as another "forward this e-mail to everyone you know" type of "virus" (self-inflicted, in a sense). I find this opening statement "Last year on April 30, 1999, a gas out was staged across Canada and the U.S. to bring the price of gas down, AND IT WORKED" (emphasis added) highly questionable--I don't remember hearing anything about it working at the time. As mentioned above, the gas gets sold regardless. Although a statement might get made, it's quite doubtful that it would have any real effect on prices. It's not like the consumers will go elsewhere to spend their money if the oil industry doesn't bow to their desires. I think the main result will be that some folks will feel good, having deluded themselves into believing that they made a contribution to bettering the world. |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 07 Mar 00 - 11:13 AM But it is sure worth the comments about worldwide gas prices, views on transportation, etc etc... Maybe it was "local area" boycotts instead of Nationwide ones...but seems to me I heard of something like this happening awhile back...or maybe I was dreaming. Mary |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Dave (the ancient mariner) Date: 07 Mar 00 - 11:20 AM I've cut my consumption of gas by two thirds; and cannot afford the power boat I was going to buy this year.. Yeah, I'm gonna buy an auxiliary sailboat now. They cannot tax the bloody wind, yet!. The sooner I can retire, and sail it away, the bloody better. Sod em! I only fill up once a week anyway, count me in. Yours,Aye.Dave |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Troll Date: 07 Mar 00 - 11:23 AM This thing probably started with the oil companies themselves. Give 'em a plan that won't really DO anything, let 'em rant and roar a little, they'll all feel good and go home and sink back into apathy and not bother congress. After all, it's an election year (and don't get me started on that!) troll |

Subject: RE: BS: US/Canadian Gas Out! -Sorry bout this... From: Penny S. Date: 07 Mar 00 - 12:07 PM Over here, you could certainly try filling up where the price is cheaper, as there are local price differences, based on delivery distance and monopoly situations, and those are down to the oil companies. Boycott motorway service stations, for example. Penny |
