Mbo - in another month or two I will be driving a moving van from Chicago to Charleston, SC nonstop (16 hours). If I can manage to take some form of transportation with me so I don't have to take the bus back, I will drop by to see you. I'd also like to visit Spaw if that can be worked out.
I've been to Raleigh. It's big, overwhelming, but it's only streets and buildings - just like any other city or town. Don't worry about getting lost or reading a map - you can always pull over to read the map. If you get too lost, ask someone for directions.
As for the distance... How many times have you driven 15 miles? 90 miles is only six 15 miles. Drive 15 miles, pull over and take a break for 10 minutes. Drive 15 more, take a break. And no one says you have to use the interstate. Look for US or state highways and use those. It'll take a little longer, but you'll end up at the same place. I once went on a month long tour of New England - over 2200 miles of which only 200 were on the interstate.
I hope this helps. Good luck and enjoy.

What time do things get geared up out there, and where in Raleigh? (I'm assuming State Fairgrounds, but you know what happens when you assume...) My parents are into medieval/renaissance stuff enough that I can probably convince them that we should go.

I have NEVER been on your back, Mbo *BESEG*

But I do have to agree with Spaw (gasp) 90 miles is NOT a big deal. And getting lost is FUN. For crissakes buy a map or something if you are that anal about it.

Remember what I told you about "Will it matter a year from now?" As I see it you have two choices for the year.
1) ace your test and miss out on a friend
or
2)study at red lights, barely pass the test, and have a GREAT story to tell the grandkids about the time you got your arse lost in Raleigh.

Have a nice trip luv! Elle

Well LOOKY who's being pushy tonight! Well, you goofballs, I'm going to try. That's all I can promise you. This is some scary stuff I'm facing here--I've never driven to Raleigh, never been on a interstate, scared of getting lost, and especially with no on to read a map for me in case I do get lost, the fact that I've never driven anywhere far (over 15 miles) by myself, and trying to bribe my parents to let me go. But all I can do is try, OK? So will you get off my bloody backs now?

Mbo - stop, take a few deep breaths, and figure out why you don't want to go. The studying is a valid reason for not going (and admirable), the rest are bullshit. It looks like you don't want to go (subconciously?) for some reason and came up with all those excuses on why you shouldn't. And most of those seem rooted in fear.
Having been in your exact position not too many years ago (and many times since), I did what you seem to be doing and wussed out. I have since regretted that many times.
I would like to suggest that you figure out the real reason you don't want to meet MMario, and once you recognize it, decide if you still want to stay home or not. Don't let everyone bully you into going (because then you might resent going) but at least be honest with yourself on why you don't want to go.
Good luck.

Mbo - taking care of your heart IS a priority. Believe me, real people are well worth the time, effort, etc. Studies ARE important, too - but you'll find a way to work that in, too. It's great you're motivated to do well. The joy of connecting with a kindred spirit is something you can't put on a shelf. 'Catters are by nature mostly a bunch driven by our hearts. Let yours sing for just a little bit, knowing you'll come back to the serious stuff in just a couple days.

I have to say I'm with Pat on this one. Live a little, kiddo! We love you and want you to flourish.

Mbo, what the hell is the matter with ye, lad??? You are a nice enough chap, but you are entirely too young to be so driven that you canna take what amounts to a single day to have an experience that you won't soon forget. You could leave by 7 am, be there by 9:30 a.m., have a great day, leave by 6:00 p.m and still be home in time to study for a couple of hours.

McMoo, let me know when you are in Chicago. It is only a 2 hour drive, or so, and I would love to meet you somewhere and have a song or two. Let me know.

All the best,

Mick

Sheee-iiit, Mbo! 90-100 miles? Geez, that's going to the grocery store down here in Texas! Get off yer butt and go see the man!! Give me a break -- what's that, an hour or two either way? And knowing your sweet little anal tendencies, you could probably write that paper or whatever standing on your head in a couple of hours.

If you don't go, I don't EVER want to hear ONE MORE DANG WHINY WORD from you about ANYTHING!!

meebs, sometimes we gotta do something for ourselves *now* and leave the work and study for another time...lots o' your metalhead classmates likely slack off and go to concerts, and they pass courses...so will you.

that said, give the guy a break (see what a low and roguish hypocrite am i?) so meebs got priorities...he knows what he wants to accomplish and knows he's gotta work hard to do it...that kinda work ethic is enviable (specially since i'll probably never have one :-)) and we shouldn't be giving him a hard time about it. i doubt it's easy on him knowing that Mario will be so close, and i'm sure mbo can beat up on himself without our help jus' fine.

pax,

kate (tho if i'm ever within 90 miles, you had better find a way to visit, meebs!!! )

Take it from me Mbo...when you graduate and get a job and possibly other numerous responsibilities you'll have bugger all time for anything. And I'll personally vouch that the higher up the greasy pole you get the harder it becomes.

I recommend grabbing the opportunity now if you possibly can, it may never come again.

And Alison...I promise I'll call by, instrument at hand, if I manage to get to Oz.

All the best,

mcmoo

Spaw's right Mbo...take the opportunity to see Mario. It was a real joy for me to hear Barry Finn and some other 'Catters singing in Boston a couple of months ago and I only missed the FSGW (is that right?) Mini-Fest with Kath Westra et al in Washington because of unalterable travel arrangements. And I'll be trying to look up 'Catters when I'm in the Chicago area for a while in May. And heck...I have to come all the way from Belgium!

Grab the moment man!

Best regards,

mcmoo

You bet you stinkin' life it bloody means something! If I don't pass, I DON'T move onto the next level. And it takes EVEN longer to graduate. Sorry for being the jerk again. But this is more important right now. When I graduate and get a job, and have TIME for a real life, I can traipse all over the country meeting Catters. But not right now.

I can't do squat about your parents...but 90 miles??? We all have things to do and I can ASSURE you that you have no idea what the real world of time and responsibility will put on you!!! Life is short...trust me. Design test and the like......20 years from now, you and everyone else won't give a shit about it, but you WOULD remember the fun of meeting Mario. You whine about your lack of 3-D friends and here's this and what do you do? Bury your head in trivial bullshit!!!!!!!!!!! For gawdsakes, take a chance on the real world.

'Spaw, you make it sound SOOOO easy! You people just don't get it, do you! I'd love to meet Mario, but a.) it's on a weekend, too jam packed, and it's over 100 miles b.) I HAVE homework...I have a 6 page design test next week, need to study c.)I've never been to Raleigh before, and I'd probably get lost d.) My parents would never let me e.) driving THAT much in three days is NOT something I look forward to. I have PRIORITIES, and I will continue to have them until I graduate.

Geeziz Meebo.....What the hell is the matter with you? Raleigh is what ... 85 or 90 miles from you? I remember driving it in under 2 hours on several occasions.....GET OUT IN THE WORLD AND OFF THE SIMPLE ASS COMPUTER!!!!

You have a great guy that you have come to know well here and who likes you coming to within 90 miles of you and you say "Have a fun time?" Mario is a great guy and often provides you with much encouragement and you're not going to drive a few miles to see him??? When you apologized for that crappola last night, a lot of people told you that you need to get out with a few 3-D friends...Well guess what kid?? You already KNOW Mario and you could be out having a nice time with him and enjoy meeting another 'Catter in the flesh!!!

So what are you going to do this weekend...Sit around and evacuate your bladder and wind your watch? TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY!!! Mario would get a huge kick out of it...and so would you....so DO IT!!!!!!

This isn't humor ... I'm completely serious.....GO MEET MARIO!!!

Spaw

just so people don't panic....I'm leaving in 31 minutes for North Carolina, and will be gone until (probably) tuesday morning. I may be back monday night, but probably won't be coherent. It's going to be one of those trips....

If anyone is in the Raleigh NC area, and has free time this saturday and sunday (3/25/00 & 3/26/00), I will be performing at the North Carolina Renaissance Festival --How much I will get to do I don't know, but The Ship's Company has four shows a day scheduled, and I hope I will get to attend at least one!
