From: MMario

just a quick synopsis, as I REALLY need some sack time. I have an interview with a consultant in the am....

I was on the road going down from 4:30 thursday until 1:30 pm friday...we ran out of gas at 2 am, and had to wait 4 hours for the gas station to open. Lovely start....Luckily the director excused me from the 1:30 cast call - said she would prefer I be awake for the faire. *grin* did hit the 6:00 pm cast call to get my pass and say hi to a few friends before going back to the hotel for pool time and SLEEP!!!. At the faire site at 8:30 saturday morning...cast call, last minute instructions and then down to the gate to mmet and greet at 9:30. 9:45 gate show, Evil sheriff overthrows his identical twin brother the good sheriff and threatens to ruin festival, Marion Hood and her Merry Wenches vow to foil him. Gates open. Meet and greet until 11:00 when the Queen arrives and I and rest of peasants demonstrate how to grovel. Another hour of meet and greet while listening to hammered dulcimer from Kat Fairbanks of the Pyrates Royale. wandered through the shire being dumb and caught comedia show. back to gate and sat on the wall and sang. wandered off again and ran into Mbo! Immedietly went in search of a Wench Guild member, pointed Mbo out to her and then lost track of him. Located more wenches, explained my plan to them, eventually finding Mbo and getting him well Wenched. We did meet up later and I did sing "The Mother's Kiss" for him. I probably spent 4 hours singing for people entering the shire....on saturday. it hit 79 degrees, there wasn't great amounts of breeze, and MY FEET HURT!!!! Sunday was even better. more later...

Glad you're back........Say, can I interest you in an "Amish-Australian Pitchfork Moustache Tuner?"

Hmm... okay, I withdraw, having said my piece, and apologise for being bitchy about it. I'm sorry, everyone. I still think, however, that Ren faires are great and Mbo should have a great time!

As an active SCAer and re-enacter, I'd say, if you don't have a tunic or anything, just wear a t-shirt that is larger than normal and a solid colour, and then try and borrow when you get there. Guitars aren't actually period, but people at Ren Faires don't tend to care. And just remember, don't get frustrated when you get lost, find it amusing! I always find that part easier with someone else in the car to laugh with... My brother and I ave a great time getting comepletely lost in the boonies.

Thanks, kat and Alison. Yeah, been there, done that, bought several damn T-shirts. (Alison, my "handle" is misleading. I'm actually in the USA, not Australia, although it's a place I've always wanted to visit and may yet one of these days. I grew to love the big city (Seattle) and was sorry when we had to move.)

Point of story was just this:

1. Everybody has hard times.
2. Life is not fair.
3. Deal with it.

You can't do it all alone, but the more you take care of on your own, the stronger it makes you.

One of the reasons those friends are still friends is that we have some absolutely GREAT stories to tell on each other about the "hard times." (Ah, the Infamous Thanksgiving Feast...remind me to share that one with you sometime...)

We survived and learned a whole bunch about coping along the way--wouldn't have missed it.

Mbo, RenFairs are a blast--go listen to the music, watch the pageantry, indulge in the fantasy for awhile. Take your sis for company, so you have someone to share the memories with. Wear your T-shirt and jeans; you're an audience this time, not a performer. Shake MMario's hand, and then give him a big hug from me.

If you're afraid you're going to get lost, even with a map, take a compass along, too (I'm serious--I've been lost more times than I can count [and incidentally discovered a lot of neat new places that way], so I have a compass mounted on my truck's dashboard--it's come in handy a bunch of times.) Remember that nothing in this life's free, but friendship is worth the price.

Go. Live life. Enjoy.

What everybody has been telling you--Ditto.

Sermon finished.

Lin

Mbo, you think being a student is a tough assignment, and it is. But try this one:

Single mother, with small child (4 yrs. old)
Never worked outside the home before.
No job skills except typing and a reasonable sharp brain.
Two (count 'em) menial jobs at very low pay.
Must keep them both to pay bills dumped on me by disappearing husband, soon to be divorced.
Divorce also to be paid for.
Naive country girl trapped in big city.
Scared to death of being alone.

I still have friends 30 years later that I made during that Godawful time. And by God, everything managed somehow to get done, including a lot of good times.

What Spaw said the first time. Do it.

Mbo, I wouldn't worry too much about clothes. Wear pants that are not obviously jeans in a solid color, if you have boots, mocs, or something middle-ages looking (it's still too cold for sandals) wear those, and take a wide leather belt (narrow will do) if you have one. Renn-faire folks usually have spare clothing, and you can probably borrow a tunic. If not, there will be lots of folks visiting the faire in everyday clothes. Of course, a peasant-blouse (a puffy-sleeved errol flyn shirt) would look marvellous, but chances are you don't have one. I'm glad you decided to go, and hope you have a lot of fun.!! oh, and if your parents have a AAA membership, you can go to AAA and get something called a trip-tick, and lots of maps!

Mbo, before Catspaw gets around to it, I'd like to say that not every warrior has to have a broadsword - a dagger will do just fine. Just remember to keep it sheathed. Remember, it's not the size of the weapon, but your skill in wielding it that matter.

Wavestar, I appreciate fully what you are saying and of course the things you mention are important......but as to Meebo.......

We care about the boy certainly, but many times, he doesn't listen and threats are of course a last resort. But believe me this group will enforce the threats to get him to face the situation...which to his credit, he has done. We're serious in this case. Much honey has been used in the past and NOW is the time for vinegar. He's a smart young fella' and he knows we're friends...but its time to get on with life as Jeri suggested. Waiting for him will only make it worse. I believe in encouragement. We've been encouraging. This was the time for a swift kick in the ass.......and he has survived and I think we may all soon be bored to tears listening to tales of his time with Mario. Hope so anyway.

Keep it goin' Meebo!!! You're doin' great!

Mbo, we're a bunch of old farts who grew up listening to Harry Chapin sing The Cat's in the Cradle. I'm pretty sure some of us also said "after [whatever] I'll be able to relax and have fun because there will be more time." There will never more time unless you make it. Your life is now, not some mythical future that will never come. If you can't manage to make the time, then stay home and study. If you're afraid of the unknown, face it.

About getting lost - this is something I plan on. I drove 11 hours to Toronto, where I'd never been before, to spend a few days with people I'd never met before. I drove around lost for about an hour until I stopped at a bowling alley and asked directions. I met some great people there who went out of their way to make sure I got to the Fielding's house. You better believe it was worth it.

I've been lost lots of times, but I've always been found. I can't imagine not being found. (Oh, yeah - I remember Jeri. She started driving to Podunk one day and nobody's seen her since...probably still out there somewhere...") I just make sure I have plenty of gas in the car.

Don't really know RenFaire ettiquitte, but I think you should only take your guitar if 1)You dress period, and 2)are willing to leave it in the car if it is not welcome (aarrrggh, not me!)
And, I got lost in the worst part of Dallas one night at 2AM, was a bunch of "homies" on the corner, so I just pulled over and asked them how to find Irving Blvd. (only it's boo-lay-vard in TexSpeak). They told me, and I was on my way! (Also managed to get lost in Lufkin the next day, Aine will get a kick outta that!)

Mbo-

I'm glad you're going to try, and best of luck... Ren Faires are a blast, meeting friends always brightens up a day. Have fun!

For the rest of you-

I know you're concerned about Mbo, and that's why you push him to go and do stuff, but I have to say, when I first read a couple of those posts, my reaction was, WHAT THE HELL? Mbo is trying to get a degree- that's a serious commitment. I know you all have yours, and remember the carefree easy days, and remember that stuff isn't important years later, but it's bloody important at the time. Sometimes if you don't get work in, it means a failure, and that's another six months you devote to this goal... for a day? I'm a slacker myself, but I know there are times when, good times or no, work comes first.

Secondly, I think the point that Mbo's parents wouldn't let him go, and he's never driven that far by himself before are pretty important. There are first times for everything, of course, and they can be and usually are a lot of fun... but parents can be a difficult obstacle to surmount, which some of you may have forgotten. Mbo's, from what I've heard, sound VERY difficult.

Anyway. Enough of a point by point debate... I guess what I'm saying is, don't come down so hard on him. Encouragement generally works better than saying, "Change your priorities and your life instantly or I'll never want to hear what you have to say again."

If you know what I mean.

TRY!!!

The Ren-Fairre, 3/25 and 3/26, is at the state fairgrounds which is on the west side of Raleigh. Take 264 out of Greenville WEST to Raleigh. It joins with 64 just outside of town...follow the signs for 64 and when it joins I-440 (belt) go to the south. Stay on 440 and there's an exit for the fairgrounds. Buy a map and you'll find it easily.

As far as the advice you've gotten here .... These people are your friends laddybuck and they've "Been there...Done that." I worked my ass off in the business world and left a Fortune 500 at age 42 at the top of my game. I'd always made plenty of time for doing what I wanted, but I worked 60 hours a week a lot of that time. But when I left, my resignation letter said I didn't want my life or my new young son's to wind up like a Harry Chapin song lyric. I wonder now how much all of that contributed to the heart attack, the by-pass, the blood pressure, the aneurism...........Whatever I have left, I'm not going to waste it on "things."

Make time for what's important. School is great and work can be great too. People are important. You need to say that 20 times a day....People are important. Nobody cares about the other stuff in the final analysis.......People are important.

Spaw
