Subject: Victorian era childrens songs From: Irish sergeant Date: 07 Apr 00 - 06:06 PM Greetings all; I'm looking for some examples of victorian era children's songs or skiiping rhymes that would have been popular in London's whitechapel distric during the time of Jack the Ripper(1888) as part of ongoing research for a novel about "Saucy Jack" Lyrics would be nice but titles will suffice as a staring point. Thank awfully, Neil |
Subject: RE: Help: Victorian era childrens songs From: roopoo Date: 08 Apr 00 - 02:46 AM If it's still in print, there's a book called "The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren" by Iona and Peter Opie. I have an old paperback published in 1973. It was first published in 1959. London is covered. It takes themes and devotes its chapters to them so you'd have to trawl through and sift out any skipping rhymes and those from the London area. After a quick glance I see that some of the rhymes and chants are late 19th century. It was published by Oxford Paperbacks (part of Oxford University Press) and the ISBN is (or was) 0 19 881121 7. If it's out of print a library may have it. Good luck! mouldy |
Subject: RE: Help: Victorian era childrens songs From: GUEST,Murray on Saltspring Date: 08 Apr 00 - 02:56 AM A good book closer to the time is that by Alice Bertha Gomme, "The Traditional Games of England, Scotland, and Ireland" (1894-1898)--reprinted in 1964 by Dover; it may still be in print, it certainly should be. It lists in alphabetical order about 600 (!) games, some of which would definitely be played by London children. Cheers- Murray |
Subject: RE: Help: Victorian era childrens songs From: The Beanster Date: 08 Apr 00 - 03:03 AM That book is available through John Gach Books Here You'll have to scroll down until you see Opie, Iona. It costs $65.00 at this site. Yikes! lol |

As an aside, this is a great place for out of print books, I've used the site often and had excellent results. |
