The riff is also used (twice) by Rumworth Morris as part of the tune set for the dance Royton and also as part of their processional music set.

As Long Firm Freddie said above, the riff comes in about 4'40" - although I'd have to listen again to Sex & Drugs.. to hear the similarities.

Chas Jankel (Dury's writing partner) is on record as saying that Ian made a point of contacting (the great) Charlie Haden (the bass player responsible for the solo on that track on Ornette's 'Change of the Century' album), rather than Ornette, to 'own up'. Haden said he'd lifted it himself from a Creole song.

And the bass player who played the solo was the late great Charlie Haden, who grew up with country music before he turned to jazz.

To answer a nearly 22 year thread request... the track is Ramblin' and on the original mix the riff comes in about 4'40" in the course of a double bass solo. Ornette apparently told Dury not to worry as he had got it from the tune Old Joe Clark or, in an alternative version of the story, an old cajun tune.

John. (Smiles) I don't think I have seen quite as many off topic subjects, for a folk and blues forum, in the thread title before. Good try. I think you must win the prize.

I saw the programe too. Sad to see him go. We do need originals like him. Or at least ones that admit where they got their original ideas from.

Can't help with the track title but I am pretty sure someone here will be able to help.

I heard a repeat of an interview with Ian Dury a week or so ago on the radio, broadcast as a tribute to him. He played a track by Ornette Coleman which he said he borrowed the riff for Sex and drugs and Rock and Roll from, and had admitted this to Ornette on meeting him. Does anyone know what this track is please?
