I lived in Edinburgh in the summer and fall of 19997.

What a fantastic city!!! There was so much music and I met many folks who have become life-long friends. I miss the way of life there and especially the music.

Say hello to Sandy Bell's Bar, The Royal Oak, and the Hebrides Bar for me.

Cheers, Debra

Calach... If you've got any good events down there, tell me, and I'll try and get a group of Uni students to come down and we'll join you. :)

St Andrews is so bloody isolated sometimes.

Another fine session is one that my good friend, Alan Hunter leads at the Waterloo Buffet on the road to Calton Hill (I cannot recall the name of the street. It's quite a small pub, but Alan's session is really nice.

If you go there, give him my best. Alan is wonderful musician and a fine songwriter.

Debra, do you know Alan? I used to play quite a lot with him and his (former) band Caltie (?) when I was living in Edinburgh. His session is on at Fridays, and I agree to the quality >;o)>

Other gigs can be found in the online edition of the Gig Guide - Here

Another great entertainer worth checking out is Andy Chung - give him my best

Havard,

I know Alan quite well and have been to Andy's sessions at the Royal Oak, but I am in America and communicate with Alan by snail-mail or phone as he is deathly afraid of computers.

We may have run into each other in Edinburgh, yes? I was there from 1 July '97 to 1 Dec '97.

Cheers, Debra

Debra, I lived in Edinburgh from Sep 1995 till Oct 1996, and have gone back quite often since. Not during your period though, I'm afraid.

I also used to hang out at the Oak (mainly playing with Neil Thompson) and at Sandy Bells (mainly Ian Grant and others on Sunday afternoons)

Look out for me, if you go back - I'm Norwegian, blonde and plays harmonicas (and occationaly other things)

Tooligan - that gets my vote. I was in Edinburgh 81-85. Went to some amazing concerts and a lot of wonderful pubs especialy Bannermans on the Cowgate - although I think that I would be too old for it now. Anyone know if the Canny Mans down Morning side ( not its official name). Does it survive in its original condition ?

Julie

This uncouth Yankee has an Edinburgh question. It's about adjectives for specific cities.

For Manchester, Liverpool, Aberdeen, and Glasgow, for example, you have:
Mancunian, Liverpudlian, Aberdonian, and Glaswegian....but....

what is the Edinburgh adjective, 'cause I can't recall that I've ever read, seen, or heard it?

Since Allan Hunter has been mentioned: he occasionally does a spot in the Captain's Bar in the city centre, and leads the session at the Goth in Prestonpans on the first Sunday of the month, 3pm to 6pm. He's a good songwriter and an entertaining performer.

Andy Chung is also still performing, presumably as well as ever but I haven't seen him in a long time. From his website, he's taken on an intriguing new genre - songs of the ethnic minority his folks come from.

Hey, what an old thread! I did post in 2000 too (as Trish Guest), and I'm still here!

Slightly joky definition of people who live here is Edinburghers (a bit like Hamburgers coming from Hamburg - and McDonalds'!) Otherwise Edinburgh itself gets referred to as Embra or Embro, the latter as in Jack's very comprehensive studies of Edinburgh-related music.

Sad to say that one or 2 of the names mentioned in 2000 are no longer with us, notably Iain Grant, the moothie player.

Bannerman's, as with many other venues on the Cowgate, is now largely a venue for young "indie" and pop bands: more likely to hear my son's band playing there than anyone as old as me!

And the "Canny Man" is still going strong in Morningside: no mobile phones, etc, allowed!

The Canny Man is perhaps best known for throwing out a customer with terminal cancer because they didn't want his wheelchair on the premises. And it still has the same management as far as I know.

Both my nieces (in their twenties) live in Edinburgh, and I was there at Uni (early sixties) and afterwards taught in a school fairly near to Morningside. My nieces call Edinburgh 'The Burgh' and people from Glasgow 'Weegies', both expressions new to me.
I've never heard people use the term 'Edinburgher'. One would just say, "She's frae Edinburgh'. If one was 'very Edinburgh' it would mean one was quite posh!
I haunted the Edinburgh Folk scene fifty years ago, dressed as a hippy. It was brilliant!

One recent development. If you look at the Facebook page for Edinburgh Folk Club

https://www.facebook.com/Edinburgh-Folk-Club-155304611154742/

you will see that they are happening in Summerhall, the old Dick Vet building next to the Meadows. They were in the University of Edinburgh Student Association's building in the Pleasance for many years up to now.

I haven't been to EFC for quite a while, since I've often being playing with the local Continental music/dance group Edinbal

https://edinbal.wordpress.com/

which met in the Edinburgh University Folk Society's room, also in the Pleasance but at the opposite end of the building on the same night. We don't have a new venue for the music nights yet, since EUSA threw FolkSoc out (I think they want the room for some braindead sports activity) - FolkSoc had a legal title to it but EUSA can afford more lawyers. (There is no formal connection between EFC and Edinburgh Uni FolkSoc, and only a few members in common).

So, it looks like EUSA have given EFC the heave-ho as well. They probably want the cabaret bar on Wednesdays for committee meetings of the Donald Trump Golfing Society or something.

Edinburgh Uni selects its students for affluence more than almost any other university in the UK, and it shows when they get a chance to wield power.

(Senoufou, "Weegie" was popularized by Irvine Welsh in "Trainspotting" - you didn't hear it much until that book came out).

Jack, I saw the film (I seem to remember a lad rummaging in a toilet for his drugs, then disappearing down it like a fish!) but I don't recall the word 'Weegie'. (But then I can hardly remember what I had for dinner last night!)

I Googled 'name for resident of Edinburgh' and apparently there was a long-running debate about it in The Scotsman. No conclusions were reached.

So, "Weegie" for Glaswegian was in the book but not the film?
Talking of which, they just shot Trainspotting 2 this summer.
Yes, Senoufou, that was Ewan MacGregor, I believe, before he grew up to be Young Obi Wan Kenobi.

Edinburghers -- amusing!

"Edinbourgeoisie" for the more cynical.

Locally, I'd say the book of Trainspotting had far more impact than the film. It's still a steady seller.

I've only heard "The Burgh" used to refer to Musselburgh. JohnnyJ will be the expert on this.

Here in the Borders the capital is often pronounced "Edinburry" but again apart from Edinburghers (which I have heard) I can't really think of any other nickname for the folk. Aside from the obvious "Auld Reekie" I can't think of Edinburgh friends living hereabouts calling the city anything else. Never heard it being called "the Burgh" and to tell you the truth what I have heard most often is just people saying "we're going into town" which kind of confuses us Borderers as when we say that we mean the town nearest to where we live rather than a city 40 or 50 miles away. The memory plays tricks with you but 'weegie' is a pretty common usage. I take it Welch's use of it simply brought it to wider use outside of eastern Scottish working class vernacular rather than he invented it as such??

My elder niece lives just behind the castle (E1) and the other in Corstorphine. They both work as graduate bankers. I've heard them myself refer to 'the Burgh'. My sister, their mum, lives near Perth, and they often ask her if she's "coming down to the Burgh next weekend" for example. I never heard this expression when I lived there in the sixties. Both girls were born in Scotland.
We think Edinburgh is a wonderful, magic city. There's nothing not to like! We were there last year and floated about smiling. Every time the plane swoops in over Arthur's Seat I get a tear in my eye. (You also get a McCulloch's tea biscuit and there's just time to eat it before you land. The flight attendant must have seen the greedy look on my face, because she smuggled me two more before we left the little Dornier aircraft!)
