Subject: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: The Shambles Date: 18 Apr 00 - 03:31 AM This maybe of interest and there is surely a lot of songs in it? THE JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. I do hope this link is going to work. |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 18 Apr 00 - 12:27 PM Thanks for the link, which does work, though I can see why you thought it might not! I have a friend from Tralee who will certainly find it interesting. There is another version of the site, incidentally, at http://www.jeaniejohnston.com which may be more recent. I found it while looking for a shorter URL! Malcolm |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: The Shambles Date: 18 Apr 00 - 01:54 PM The test was to find a LONGER link. (smiles).
The following is what we are talking about. "IRELAND is re-building a remarkable Tall Ship for the Millennium. We invite you to follow our progress at the shipyard in County Kerry and join us daily aboard the Jeanie Johnston on her Millennium Voyage TM to the United States and Canada from May 2000." |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: Liam's Brother Date: 18 Apr 00 - 01:58 PM I've been following the progress of the Jeannie Johnston through my friends at South Street Seaport Museum here in New York City. She'll be berthed at the Museum sometime in July of this year and Bob Conroy and I will be singing on board.
All the best,

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: MartinRyan Date: 18 Apr 00 - 07:05 PM Thought I posted to this a few hours ago - to the effect that the launch was due to take palce toda. They seemed to be having some problems and looked like missing their tide (about 6 hours ago). Haven't heard since. I'll check in the morning. Regards |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: MartinRyan Date: 19 Apr 00 - 04:44 AM As of now (Weds. 9.30 a.m. local time) they're still in trouble. The ship has to be transferred from the stocks to a low loader, then to a semi-submersible barge which will take her out into the channel and drop her in. So far they've only managed the first part! There's also a gale due this afternoon. Mind you, I think its basically off the land (the gale - not the boat!) Regards |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: catspaw49 Date: 19 Apr 00 - 08:44 AM I have only read a few articles in "Sail" and a couple of other publications. I know they had some problems with the wood used in the planking or something, but I'm glad to see her almost in the water. Keep us posted Martin. Spaw |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: MartinRyan Date: 19 Apr 00 - 08:14 PM Well, by nightfall on Wednesday, they had her on the barge, in shallow water. Tomorrow she is due to move out into Tralee Bay (at Fenit harbour) and dropped into the water. Stll blowing a gale. Regards If you want a song connection - try "Reilly from the County Leitrim"! |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: Liam's Brother Date: 19 Apr 00 - 11:35 PM ...or The Phoenix of Erin's Fair Isle (I always like the songs that allow you to choose the title). Thanks for the report, Martin. I've been passing on the details.

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: MartinRyan Date: 20 Apr 00 - 05:19 PM Just half-heard a report (as Gaeilge i.e. in Irish) which said there was no further progress , as the gale was now blowing up the bay! She still sits on the barge, at the quayside. Problem is - we're just past full moon so the spring tides will start to drop. Wouldn't surprise me if she's there for a fortnight. Regards |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: vindelis Date: 20 Apr 00 - 06:38 PM If the half finished shell, on display last September, is anything to go by, the Jeanie Johnson must truely be a sight to behold. Are we likely to see her on trials in the English Channel? Good luck to one and all. |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: MartinRyan Date: 21 Apr 00 - 02:32 PM The final stage of the launch has been put off for at least a week, due to bad weather, I'm afraid. Watch this space! Regards |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: MartinRyan Date: 27 Apr 00 - 11:19 AM Just got the following news from a friend of mine involved in the project: "The JJ is remaining at Blennerville for another week.May 4th is the now the likely date for entering the water at Fenit. Meanwhile the masts and spars are being erected and the interior fitout is continuing at Blennerville so no time is being lost. The weather was the problem last week -the insurers would not agree to the move while the winds were above the limit and then the high tide had gone for 2 weeks. The naming ceremony is on May7th at Fenit -Mary Mc Aleese, our patron is breaking the bottle of champagne." Mary McAleese is the President of Ireland, BTW. I'm heading off to Rennes in Brittany on May 6th, but will post the latest news before I head off. Regards |

Subject: RE: The JEANIE JOHNSON PROJECT. From: MartinRyan Date: 04 May 00 - 06:31 PM Nearly there! Heard this (Thurs.) evening that she's still on the barge, but with the masts now stepped. Should be moved out tomorrow and then floated off the barge on Saturday. Official naming ceremony is on Sunday. Forecast is fine.
There may be a short delay on the US trip - depending on trials , but they hope to make it reasonably promptly. <> I'm off to Brittany for a week so maybe someone else can update this over the next few days. Just keep an eye on the Irish Times website at www.irishtimes.com. They'll surely have details. Regards |
