Subject: Singers session in Galway, Ireland. From: Noel P Date: 28 Apr 00 - 08:49 AM Hello all, if anyone is travelling to Galway be sure to check out "The Crane Bar". A singers/listeners session is held on the first and third Saturday of each month. It starts at 6-30 p.m. and ends at 9-30 p.m. A trad session usually follows. A special guest is usually present, last session Dick Hogan was the special guest and it was a marvelous night. Anyone can sing, and there are people from many countries who join in. I am amazed how so many have got to know about this session as it started not so long ago. There is no charge, however on the night there is a special guest a donation of one pound (punt) is requested. Enjoy! |

Subject: RE: Singers session in Galway, Ireland. From: GUEST,Annraoi Date: 28 Apr 00 - 03:14 PM Glad to see that gatheings for singers are once more growing in popularity. Sessions are all very well, but the Tradition always gave space for the singer. Another prime spot to check outr is "Iona" at the Camphill Centre in Holywood, Co. Down. Attracts performers like Len Graham and Seán Donnelly. yours truly has been known to warb;e a few notes. Planned for the near future is a singers forum based in the CB on Belfast's antrim road. Subject: RE: Singers session in Galway, Ireland. From: Noel P Date: 02 May 00 - 12:35 PM I welcome all comments, but yes Galway is bursting with music, but not always what one desires. Many sessions are not true in the sense that the musicians are paid musicians. There is nothing better than a spontanious session. In many cases over amplification spoils the occasion. I prefer a ballad session to a trad session i.e. jigs and reels etc, that is not to say I don't enjoy these and a decent ballad session is hard to come by even in Galway. Again a ballad session can be ruined by those who don't care to listen or prefer to sing something else. I was at a session in Taffes in Shop St one night and the crowd drowned out the musicians by singing a different song! It was really a case of driving the rats out of a stack! Which brings me back to the session in The Crane, those present want to listen and sing. Total (well almost) hush. And if one is not familiar with or does not enjoy all the songs there will surely be some moments to treasure. Again enjoy! |

Subject: RE: Singers session in Galway, Ireland. From: Noel P Date: 03 Jul 00 - 06:55 AM Unfortunately the singers session has been cancelled for the Summer months. The Galway Advertiser states that the session 2 weeks ago will be the last until September 16. The numbers attending had fallen off somewhat but I feel it was a mistake to cancel. The European football tournament probably did not help matters either. So until September 16 there is plenty of time to learn a few songs! Noel P. |
