Hey Granma that article in the paper is too big to e mail. Send me a personal message with your mailing address and I'll snail mail it. I dont have midi or audio capability. However, if you call me, I'll sing it for you. My number is in the personal info file.

Dear Dianne,

I hate to seem pedantic here, but in previous discussions, there are at least 3 or 4 songs titled "Orphan Train" and they are in the threads that I suggested that you go back and check. There is a sound clip link to one of them and another that Gene listed, you can hear the entire song--different, but equally compelling in telling the tale.

I know you're new here and I'm very glad to have you on board the Mudcat. It takes awhile to see just how much is available on this site, not only in the Digitrad Database, but also from past discussions in this forum as well. Try entering "Orphan Train" in the Forum Super Search and you'll find a LOT more info and several different versions and sound clips too.

BTW, if you're using PC Windows based stuff, find one of the threads labeled "HearMe" and join us for a sing around. Every Sunday night at 7:30 (EDT) there is always one going on and many other nights as well.

Although "Orphan Train" isn't there yet, there is a basic tune midi for a lot of songs in the pull down menu of the "Quick Links" above.

This is the official site and it is also an unfolding story in American History. I urge all to learn about THE ORPHAN TRAIN. And thanks to you all who responded. Diane

I almost forgot Kendall. Can you make that song into either an audio or a midi file so I can hear the tune? I sequence music but I need a base to start from - being an ear player, I have to get it into my head first! Here's my midi web site to stop by and EVERYONE send me an e-mail and SAY HELLO! http://www.geocitier.com/ohioweaver.geo

I too had a short article in my local paper, which I have lost, and I would certainly like you to send me a copy by e-mail (.jpg or .txt). I seem to remember that it had a picture of a lady who was on a train and it said that there was going to be a reunion this year somewhere. I'll visit that web site too! AND MY THANKS TO YO ALL!

I don't think the lyrics of the Massengill song were posted in the earlier threads. Here they are - my apologies if they have been posted already.

RIDER ON AN ORPHAN TRAIN
(David Massengill)

Once I rode an orphan train
And my brother did the same
They split us up in Missouri
James was five and I was three

He got taken by some pair
But for me they did not care
We were brave and did not cry
When they made us say goodbye

That was the last I saw of him
Before some family took me in
But I swore I'd run away
And find my brother James some day

I went back when I was grown
To see how old the Children's Home (sic)
And I asked for to see my file
Of when I was an orphan child

It's sad they say, there's been a flood
File washed away in Missouri mud
Sometimes life is a stone wall
You either climb or else you fall

In every time on every street
All the faces that I meet
And I wonder could one be
My brother James come back to me

Though I don't know where he's gone
I have searched my whole life long
Now I roam from town to town
But there's no orphan Lost and Found

Sometimes I dream a pleasant sight
My brother James and I unite
Remembering our last goodbye
No longer brave, we start to cry

I hope he lives a life of ease
All his days a soft warm breeze
May he sit upon a throne
And may he never sleep alone

Once I rode an orphan train
And my brother did the same
They split us up in Missouri
James was five and I was three

Go to the "Super Search" box in the upper left hand corner of the main thread page and enter "orphan train" and read a couple of the threads which will come up. See if there is anything there that might be useful.

I'm sure you may get some other dropping by this thread.

Trying to put together a small collection of songs that are related directly to THE ORPHAN TRAIN experience that ran from N.Y. to out west from mid 1860's I believe till about the 1930's. Would like some stories (first person if possible) or to speak to anyone whose relative was on those trains and most of all, songs and midi music witht he tunes. Thanks

There are at least three different Orphan Train songs:

1) "Rider On an Orphan Train" by David Massengill (also done by Tom Russell);

2) "Orphan Train" by Julie Miller;

3) "Orphan Train" by Bruce Phillips (recorded by Jody Stecher & Kate Brislin).
