Subject: Don't want to offend, but........
From: catspaw49

We have had some excellent threads lately of ALL types and the balance seems to be excellent, so I'm loathe to bring this up, but I just listened to the songs that Michael K. had posted (which are EXCELLENT BTW) and there are very few posts on the thread. When I saw the file size, I traced the thread so that later, when I had time to download, I could come back. But this brings up something else that does bother me and I know I'm not alone.

This happens on EVERY TYPE OF THREAD. Someone asks a question, ie., What album is some song on?....and within the first couple of posts, someone answers the question. Then maybe a few or more others come along and a discussion follows. Good so far. Then along comes someone else who posts the same answer as already given and adds nothing to the discussion.....obviously never bothered to read the rest of the thread. On BS threads, its more obvious that some could give a crap less about what anyone else has to say, just gotta' give us their opinion.

This place is about opinions, but I feel I owe it to the other posters on the thread to at least read what they have to say. Michael K. put a lot of work into those recordings. Why not just trace the thread and download when you have time? I think some have bypassed it when they saw the download size, and unlike the other threads, they can't just skip over and throw out their "words of wisdom." I have read on numerous occasions this line: "I don't have the time to read all the rest of this, but HERE is what I think!" Even without the line, at times its obvious that the poster has not read the thread. This is really aggravating in some of the heavier discussions. To me, this type of thing is the real definition of compulsive posting.

If a thread interests you and you don't have the time to read it, trace it and come back when you do. Otherwise, have a Coke and a smile and shut ta' hell up.

Spaw

I'll admit to being one of those who has ocassionally posted without reading all of a long thread — usually as a response to a particular thing somebody has said — but it's a point well taken, 'Spaw.

I, too, feel if I am going to comment, reading what others have to say is the polite thing to do and it does take some time, but I consider it time well spent. The times it has really aggravated me is when someone posts nearly the exact same answer someone else has already done earlier on.

Thanks, Spaw.

Most of my pleasure from the Mudcat is in reading all the posts to a thread. Except when I fall asleep doing it.I hate waking up with my finger on the scroll down button and not knowing where I am in the thread. But I won't post to a thread without having read it in it's entirety. It bothers me also to see posts that are obviously done without having read anything beyond the first post.As 'spaw said, this is a discussion forum and what kind of discussion is it if someone just jumps in and back out without getting the feeling of the entire thread?
rr PS since i suffer at times from PAS,If i am trumatized from it and have Post Acquisition Syndrome Trauma, will I be able to put it all behind me?

Hey, was that directed at me, Catspaw? Yeah, sure, I used to be a notorious skip-poster, but now I make it my business to read every post in any thread I post to. But as a past offender I'm a little touchy on this topic. I can't wait to hear what Katlaughing has to say on this subject!

OK Spaw, all levity aside, it is an excellent point. I think that sometimes, as you read a thread, you are prompted to express an idea or opinion and tempted to jump to the bottom of the thread to post it. Many times I have experienced this, only to find my point expressed by someone else as I continue to read.

I and probably several others owe 'Spaw a bunch for drawing attention to the Michael K thread if nothing else.

I am listening to those excellent tracks as I write and can only agree that it is well worth sifting through everything to get to the pearls (if only we had time!).

I guess Michael's thread name was not provocative enough, so we passed over it.

Spot on Spaw! I had this happen in a recent thread, the G run, and, although I dont approve of someone posting because they didnt read the previous posts on a subject, the thing that pisses me off is being made to feel like what I posted has no value.

I find it annoying when I take a bit of care about pointing out what I see as a flaw in some point of view, or a factual error and a few posts later someone pops up making exactly that same point, or that factual error - I don't mean disagreeing with me, and pointing out where I've got it wrong, because that's fine. I mean coming up with exactly the same point as if they'd just thought of it for the first time.

It reminds me of what I once did in a singaround where I goofed off and lost all concentration, and asked someone to sing a song that they had just finished singing...

But I like to look for explanations that avoid fights - and one thing that sometimes happens to me is that I write a post - and then I find that it won't load for some reason, congestion on the wires somewhere, I suppose. So sometimes I just save what I've written to my disc, and load it the next time I log on - maybe without bothering to read the messages that have ben posted in between. (And the reason that happens is because I haven't refreshed the thread page that's on my screen atbthe time I reload my message.)

And the other thing that happens is that when a long thread gets retired by a "part 2" thread, and you get pulled into it at that stage,it's very easy not to go back and read the earlier thread, especially if there isn't a built in link.

Admission of guilt...

I'll admit to being as dumb as a bag of hammers sometimes, I do sometimes NOT read the whole of a thread before I respond, but I always read the whole thread eventually. In looking back, I've sometimes also said at the outset of a reply that I haven't read all of a thread first, but only if it's exceedingly long and I'm short on time. I'm also not gonna complain about others doing it, as it neither bothers or inconveniences me, it's just something that happens.

However, I will try harder to avoid duplicating info if that's what the community of Mudcatters want, and I think this is fair, but I'll still add my two cents. It is interesting how we sometimes get consensus by repeated posts.

Peace, Mooh.

I think my biggest failing on this sort of thing is when I come onto a long thread, I have a tendency to scan the posts trying to get the gist of what people have said and there have been occasions where I have missed a point for that reason.

I should be more careful but I'm afraid that is just me although I do apologise when I realise I have made such an error.

When it comes to reading threads (and I'm a fine one to talk with my spelling mistakes, typos and bad grammer) one thing I have trouble with is a very large block of text that has not been split up into reasonable sized paragrahs. I don't know whether it is my eyesight, my mind or what but I find them very difficult to read and regardless of how good the content may be, I skip them comlpletely rather than struggling to read them and I will continue to do so.

To all my fellow comedians on this thread, my only regret is that I started it and don't have the chance to "compete" here.......so to all of you, especially Larry, have a Nehi Orange instead.

I also appreciate that there are times that we "cross-post" and that's pretty inevitable. No big deal. also there are times when I've said, "Good post Gaylord," then added a comment to clarify a difference or add to the posting. But good ol' Kendall and McGrath nailed it.

When you are making the same point or enhancing it, its nice to at least acknowledge what someone else said. You bust your chops writing an explanation and then some other person comes along and says the same thing WITHOUT acknowledging your post.......like THEY have the only idea that matters. You're reading it thinking, "Didn't I already say that?" This is really obvious on the music threads where the same info with nothing new pops up 3 or more times as the thread goes along.

Nothing wrong with adding your additional 2 cents, just mention the other guy too, even if he is an idiot.......like Kendall.

when the "duplicates" show up at virtually the same time, or a few minutes apart, it's probably cross posting or posting-lag....but there are times when DAYS after a post, yet still within the same thread, the identical information is posted. THAT is what *I* find annoying.

Now something that strikes me as funny is how requests for information on the same song seem to run in batches...

i'm like jon....
i'm a scanner. many threads are very long. i work. i have a busy demanding family. i have a few animals to look after. and a few instruments to play. (i know, i know, who doesn't?!)
but i enjoy mudcatting. i learn a lot here. i sometimes have something to say here. i wish there was a limit to the number of entries per thread....maybe 50 or so. i wish that they were numbered so that you could pick up where you had to stop reading without having to reread it all.
sometimes i'll see a topic start in the morning that i'm interested in, and think about responding when i get time later in the day, only to find the thread has grown to 5, 973, 172 postings which i then have to read all thoroughly (and heavens, with all those in jokes and cross references and hidden knowledge i don't even understand it all) before i say anything to what the first person who started the thread was asking in the first place.
and oh how i wish that people wouldn't add anything to a thread while i'm trying to add something to it, which is probably happening RIGHT NOW!

night owl..... that's EXACTLY everything i was just going to say!

The Heroic Catspaw

As I came upon this thread Just to feast my eyes I thought it was a joke So I was surprised

I read the post by catspaw Read him rant and rave Amid all the sniggering jests The Mudcat he tried to save

But the jokers would have none of it When he tried to make a stand They tried their best to prevent His word from spreading across the land

But he laughed at them and their jokes Saying my words will never die You may grin and giggle all you want But i will not stand aside

So post if you have something to add If you read the whole thread But if you don't then don't bother me Be off with you instead

BTW I do realise this is a very lame effort on my part.

Well finally I can find Mudcat for the first time in over 24 hours, talk about withdrawal.

I too have felt, on occasion, that my posts have been ignored or somehow not credible, when someone has repeated the same thing that I have already said.

Thank you for the explanation of why this sometimes occurs McGrath (I do not mean by this statement that you are the culprit, fortunately my memory banks don't seem to be able retain perceived slights with monikers and I just bumble on regardless)

As far as my failing memory serves, I think I read most threads through, that I choose to respond to, before posting.

What I am guilty of, is not acknowledging someone's comment or post, especially when someone new, is taking a step into the forum for the first time and because I have not been here that long, I do remember how daunting that can be.

For my part, it is a combination of inexperience on the Net, (I forget that people can't see you smile or hear you laugh), worry about loading threads with what others might perceive as inane comments like "Wow! what a hoot!" or "However did you come across that wonderful bit of information?", of not being, unfortunately, inately a strokey person, and sometimes of just shear laziness or lack of time.

I would like to resolve to remember that I should spend more time here, acknowledging other people's existance. I know that when someone does that for me, it sure feels good, and hopefully I won't get flamed for bunging up threads with useless? drivel .

And because it has taken me over half an hour to compose this post, (livestock to feed, office duties and phone disruptions) please forgive me if I am guilty of duplication.

The other thing we can do is send the "thank you for saying that" responses as personal messages, if it feels like they might otherwise clutter up the thread. Or the "that was a silly thing to say" responses, for that matter, if it feels as if they might make the thread feel less friendly than it should be.

Of course that doesn't work with people signing in as GUEST, which is one reason it's such an anti-social thing to do on a longterm basis.

Evidently you're off your meds 'cause you seem to have forgotten your name.

Spaw, I think you were dead on the mark. I do read all the threads i respond to and it's a good Idea to do so. Otherwise how can one competently make intelligent conversation on the topic. The tips poeple like you, Mcgrath of Harlow, Praise and Aine have offered helped me immensely in navigating Mudcat. Have a great night all. Neil

I doubt very much if someone repeating some already-given information in a 30 or 40 post thread is gonna get anyone's shorts in a Knot, but when I see it in a 4 or 5 post one, I DO react.

How many folks go over their "headers" three or four times to make sure there aren't spelling mistakes or typos?

Rick

It don't seem to make any difference to how often I check Rick. It will look fine when I post but when I come back and re-read my own posts later, I am horrified at some of the things I have done. It still mystifies me why it happens and if I go back over postings I have made to newsgroups in Deja-news, I see little anything like as bad as my blunders here. I also wrote the documentation for a major UK's plants MRP (basiclly and advanced stock control system) that was successful.

God knows why I do what I do in Mudcat because I don't know but I keep doing doing it. Maybe I just get too over-enthusiastic here.

Jon

Same here - however I check, it always seems to happen that, just as I push the button, some glaring error leaps out at me. Touch wood that it doesn't happen this time...

something in what you said regarding spelling reminded me of a post I made when I first arrived here McGrath, although this probably belongs on a Newcomers to the Formum Thread.

Metchosin enters the Tavern, tired after floundering about for the last couple of weeks, drags its great ponderous bulk to a corner and beaches itself upon two chairs, immediately starting a conversation with itself.

"Oh dear! …. Why did it come up like that?….all run together and stuff?" Metchosin asks looking dazed and confused

"Because you forgot the little "br" thingies again, you blithering idiot!" Metchosin admonishes itself.

"Oh……….Gee, how come I posted that answer to that question and it didn't show up until about thirty other people had answered and my answer didn't make sense anymore?" asks Metchosin, still looking dazed and confused."

"You fool! What do you expect when you leave the screen up, wander out of the room for half an hour and don't punch Send 'till you return!" says Metchosin, getting exasperated with itself.

"Ahhh I see….But its still not coming up like I sent it," Metchosin whines.

"For the umpteenth time Metchosin! Don't try and get cute and type the "br" thingies twice at the end of a line, once is enough already!"

"Oh, O.K… But those guys were sooo rude to me when I added my two cents worth to that thread," Metchosin blubbers.

"For gawds sakes Metchosin! Slow down and read what's being said, they weren't saying that your rant was too long and unreal, they were talking about something else entirely and to each other, not you," Metchosin admonishes itself again.

"I know how to spell those words, really I do. Did I really spell it like that? Oh I didn't spell it like that, surely! I thought I checked the spelling before I hit the button! oh jeeeez, I must look like an illiterate boob!" Metchosin cringes.

"Look you self centered twerp, nobody cares about your bleeding spelling. It's not a test! There is no Miss Worthington to tell you "your not very good with your hands, are you my dear". Stop this whingeing and get on with what you have to say! Substance over form my dear."

"But I'd like to join in on a chat in the pub too," pouts Metchosin.

"Just be patient Metchosin, you're still typing at minus twenty while looking at the keyboard and not the screen. You'll understand all the ins and outs of this site…Eventually….I hope," Metchosin trails off, "There, there, have a good belt of single malt instead" says Metchosin, trying to comfort itself.

"A Highland Park, please, please!" Metchosin implores.

"Are you buying?" Metchosin replies to itself indignantly.

"No, I thought you were." Metchosin looks stunned.

"In that case, we'd better make it a Blue."

Metchosin, seated on its three ample buttocks, sighs with resignation and stares off into space.

The "twerp" comment refres to myself only and not to others.

Very funny, Metchosin, and alas all too true. I often reread what I have written during the pause between sending and accepting -- aaaaaahhhh!!!! I feel like running towards the telephone line and cutting down a pole or something. The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on, nor all your piety nor wit can call it back to cancel half a line....
yours, Peter T.
