Subject: How Has Hearme Enhanced Your Life
From: Little Neophyte
Date: 18 May 00 - 08:56 AM

There have been several threads on how the Mudcat has enhanced our lives but I am curious about what people have gotten out of Hearme. It keeps growing and it is becoming a very significant aspect of the the Mudcat Cafe.
It would sure be nice to hear from Hearmers about what it has offered them, what they have learned, some funny stories, things like that.
Personally I am creating this thread because I do want to get involved in Hearme, but sometimes I get a mental block when it comes to the computer and I shut down and give up.
So if I read some personal Hearme experiences, I bet I'll be inspired to put more effort into getting there.

LN - HearME has let me HEAR several songs I have read about but never heard before. It has let me HEAR renditions in different styles of old favorites of mine. It has let me HEAR the voices of people I will probably otherwise only know through print. And has let me HEAR original songs from performers I would probably NEVER have heard in any other manner.

It has allowed me to SING for people who have done marvelous things for my ego with their response to my singing (thanks everyone) affording me great pleasure, and they seemed to have enjoyed it as well.

And with the text chat available as well, you can not only listen and sing, but hold conversations without messing up the performer (unless you're a compulsive reader such as I, who cracks up about the text while trying to sing...)

it's not perfect, but it's one giant leap forward...

Well, Neo, the first thing I noticed was the complete absence of any desire on anyone's part to be nasty, even when people who don't appear to get along AT ALL in the threads are at HearMe. The music takes care of that like it should. Hear someone sing, or sing to someone, and it's never the same afterwards.

For me personally, the answer goes like this. What have I gotten out of HearMe? Oh, not much, just kept me alive when I didn't know what was wrong with me.

Nice to see you again Praise,.... MMario summed it up very well.....

and where else can you sit in on a world wide song circle.

I think it's great for hearing tunes that otherwise would be sent snail mail etc... just set up a tape recorder and someone can sing it to you......

and it's great for catching up with friends

It has made me work harder on learning new songs. I find I am playing and singing a lot more. And one thing I am really thankful for is that I actually picked up my dulcimer the other night and played it on Hearme. Haven't even played it for probably 5 months.

I also like hearing all the different songs that I have never heard and hearing the people that I will probably never meet.

I am still shaking a lot the few times I do anything but I can feel my confidence getting better. (Well, a little) If it weren't for Hearme I probably never would have played or sang for anyone. I really enjoy listening to everyone.

It has made me start a song book for myself. I LOVE IT!!!

And I am a compulsive reader. Makes me forget what I am playing. So far I can only get half way through a song on the autoharp. But I am working on it.

I am new to Mudcat and was amazed at the friendly welcome at Hearme. For the first time in my life, I have sung in public. And no one laughed - at least not out loud. I have heard singers and songs that I could never hope to hear in the "real" world.

But Harpgirl's music was the best. I immediately bought an autoharp and have been playing with it every night since. If you had asked me even 2 months ago if I would ever learn to play an instrument or read music, I would have looked at you as if you were crazy. Now I am planning to attempt guitar and maybe the sexiest banjo I can find.

Hearme is always fun but every once in a while Mbo is "on" and the music is painfully pretty. Or DaveO and Spider are at their best and treat us to some raunchy fun. Sorcha and her daughter, Ceitagh, MMario,,Jon Freeman and his Mom, falsetto Max. I am forgetting at least a dozen more - sorry. Little N - come listen, if you are not able to perform. It's a wonderful place.

Bonnie:

We are waiting for you to join the Hearme Circle! Find some young person (guy or gal) that lives and breathes computers and have them figure it all out.

We want to hear those banjos that we keep reading about!!!

Actually, I feel that I've gotten to know another side of people through hearme. We are all multi-facetted and the glimpse that you see of me from typing/chat is different from the glimpse that you see of me in hearme. It's the same when I meet mudcatters in person. Hearme has exposed me to a whole new continents of music! and let me hear tunes that I never had right before.

WARNING ***** WARNING ***** WARNING *****

!!!HEARME IS ALSO ADDICTING!!!

I was a mudcat addict before, but now with hearme I actually go through withdrawals if I'm gone for a week or more. It's a very powerful musical drug!

WARNING ***** WARNING ***** WARNING *****

Last, Hearme has helped me overcome much of my performance anxiety. I'm a basement singer and am just learning Banjo. For years I just accepted that I was musically challenged. Therefore, in the past I played/learned mostly for my own enjoyment, in my basement, or at the local autoharp club meetings which were very supportive. HEARME has given me the chance to overcome many of my performance fears. Now I'm ready to try to find local jams, etc.

I can remember as an 11 year old boy, talking on my neighbors ham radio. I was in complete awe as I spoke with someone from the other side of the world. I never dreamt that 35 years later i'd be in touch with so many good folks from so many different places. I first found the Mudcat about a year ago & joined in a few months after that. Since then I've gotten to know a number of you through your posts in the various threads, and some through personal messages,{thanks L.N.for your kindness,it really touched my heart}. The one thing that really stands out about "catters" is their willingness to help each other. It never seems to take very long for a lyric request to be answered, or most any other question for that matter.I've found the song challanges to be very theraputic, and to have some of my material in the Mudcat songbook a great boost to one's ego{thanks Aine for all your hard work}. For all those talented folks sitting on the fringes like I did for the first few months, please join in, I can't think of a friendlier place to be. And now we've got Hearme,I can't explain what it meant for my daughter and I to be able to be in a jam session with such talented people. But as I was jamming that little stick into my F9 key ,{ hey what do you expect from a carpenter?}, just a little bit of that 11 year old kid came rising to the surface again.

Thanks, Ron.

Midchuck, Dharmabum--

Jon Freeman has written a lock button program for Hearme tht eliminates the need for creative F9-key weights. See this thread to download it.

Even tho I've not yet gotten to perform (no mic available) it has increased my confidence in my own playing. To hear someone playing a song and say "Oops" or stopping to re-start at a flubbed chord or verse makes me realize that I'm not the only person who can't perform flawlessly. Knowing that I've got others at my level is somehow relaxing.

It's also a place to learn. Exposure to music you wouldn't have otherwise heard, how to do a barre F on a classical guitar without buzzing, the difference in effect on your emotions caused by a minor and a seventh chord. Depending on who is singing/playing on any given night, the variety of topics to learn about (or teach) is endless.

I love Hearme. I hear so many songs I've only heard about, and I get to listen to wonderfully talented musicians in the comfort of my home! What could be better? I love listening to Spider Tom sing some outrageously funny composition, and hear Mbo croon a ballad or (when we let him) an ELO song. Dave TAM has an entertaining array of shantys and alison has a lovely voice. Then there's DaveO, JAB, Sinsull, Midchuck and others....autoharp nite was fun...I love hearme!

Besides, they say nice things when i sing...motivating me to learn new songs.

I think Dharmabum has pretty well described the value of this tool. I think hearing people, only seen in text for the last three years, has enhanced the Cafe; and opened up a new form of entertainment. I hate television, and enjoy listening to the multi talented people, who share their music and laughs over the internet. This Cafe is a nice place to browse and enjoy music with conversation. How else could one chat with with friends in Australia and California from Nova Scotia? I liken this to Ham radio, CB, and a magazine, all rolled into one package. Yours, Aye. Dave

I've only been to one HearMe session so far, the autoharp one one may 14. I was only able to listen for a little while, and didn't try to play anything as I faced the F9 dilemma for myself. But I was really impressed, and enjoyed chatting a little. And the music was great. Due to my bizarre work/sleep scheduling, it is hard for me to attend most HearMe's. But I intend to keep watching for them. One of my big insecurities about playing is that I have no idea what I sound like on the receiving end, or even if I can be heard at all without jamming the mike into the instrument soundhole while holding the F9 with my nose, putting my mouth close enough so my voice can be heard. But just listening really is a blast, hearing all these people postings I have read. Who knows, probably some time I'll get my instruments, mike, and converted moustache tuner for the F9, and I'll ask you kind folks if you can HearMe or not. (I was certain a Shubb Capo would hold that key down, but it's not even close). Thanks, BlueJay

I've only been to one, so far, and I agree with what everyone else has said. My only problem is that I'm not a night bird, and the US start time of 7-30pm is 12-30am for us in the UK,and I can't stay awake that long!!!!
It is wonderful singing for such an appreciative audience, though, and hearing the exceptional talent and knowledge of other Mudcatters. Hwyl, Bron.

For that matter, Don't forget ANYONE can start a HearMe session -- gather your victims -- I mean audience --- where you may, but there is usually someone hanging around the mudcat at most hours...

Hearme..... Hearme.... Hearme.....

Well, Isn't that's what it's about? So others can hear me? and I can Hear them? It's what music is about and Bill Staines puts very aptly in one of his songs "Let us build a bridge of Music, let us span it with a song..." THis is some bridge, covering the whole earth!!

Yes, reading and singing does present it's problems for us who can't talk and play at the same time.. (reading and playing two different things presents the same problem for me...) but what the hey..... It's FUN!!!!! Gives you a chance to share your best and your newest on a very appreciative audience ( and if they DON'T like it, at least they can't throw anything at you!!!)

I find that being able to share my music with anyone, anywhere always brings me and those listening pleasure and this is just another way to do that.....

BTW,, the big toe, (socks off) works well on the F9 as does my Kyser capo....

come and enjoy,.....

Musicman....

I use a capo to hold the key down, too, Musicman! (Or at least, I did on the one and only occasion I got the guts to try guitar on Hearme.) I love hearme because it gives me an opportunity to sing for people who don't get irritated by the fact that I sing all the time! And how else would I get to hear Dave sing Over the Hills and Far Away? (I Love it!!!!) I've been going crazy with AP Exams keeping me away. (But I took the last one today! I'm free! Free at last!)

Little Neo: Do it! Do it!....what a great experience for me! I am relatively new to Mudcat, and stumbled into HearMe last Monday(?) and had the time of my life. Not being equipped to sing/play made absolutely no difference to my enjoyment. I heard wonderful music from people who's names I've been reading for a while and it was great to be able to put a personality there, or a voice. I enjoyed the "chat" too, and heard incredible music (the quality of the broadcast isn't great, but its pretty easy to ignore). I met Homeless, ClintonHammond, Mary fr. Kentucky, Mbo, Jon Freeman, Kendall, Jeri and several others and it was like a night out when you got no money and nowhere to go! DO IT!

Totally in Awe....

P.S. Thanks, Mbo, for the JP tune...

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? Who can count how many new songs I learned by listening to all the great Mudcat talent out there---not to mention the great text and all the off-the-threads kinda things you get to know about fellow Catters...bringing us all closer in a big way. I remember the first HearMe I ever did, the Robert Burns Night one...where I was trying to sing Rattling Roarin' Willie but I was so nervous my whole body was shaking. Now look at me! Perhaps not a show-off exactly yet (!) but a mic hog! And everynight wanting to learn more and more Spider Tom songs! I LOVE YOU ALL, GANG!!!!

It certainly HAS enriched my life, it's probably the most fun I have all week...and I love doing them every night..gives me something to look forward to after long days of annealing and wedging. And I love performing as much as listening, like Christy Moore says "When I get and encore, I go home feeling like a king, it's a 2-way situation, I get a lot of pleasure when I sing."

BTW I hope you all know that there's another HearMe session tonight! Dave finally is going to be able to sing for us, and he has lots of sea-chanteys to serenade us with!

Even tho it's been said a couple times in this thread already, I want to re-iterate it again. Anyone can start a HearMe at any time. Start a new thread titled "HearMe NOW" or "HearMe tonight" or something similar. Mbo's started three of them this week that I know of. And there's nothing saying that y'all over in the other half of the world need to wait for us in the States. Start a HearMe for UK/Oz at whatever time you feel comfortable with. You might be surprised how many of us at work would join in, if not performing at least providing a willing audience.

Another use you might have for hear me is to help reduce stage fright. Go into HearMe when no one else is there (it's available 24/7) hit F9 and play/sing away (I've done this). There's no one there to hear your blunders and screw-ups, so some of the pressure is off, but it gets you used to playing in front of a live mic. Which helps some later on when you do have an audience.

Dave, a lot of folks have been having the same problems, if you use Netscape, try using Internet Explorer as your browser instead. Then when you enter HearMe, it will ask you if you want to download the plugin "voiceCREATOR". Click yes...HearMe has made some upgrades, this being one of them, and it's giving some folks headaches, but IE seems to resolve it. Once you got the plug-in, yer on your way back in!

It is mostly just "meeting" people that I have "met" in the forum and hearing them sing/play for me although there are times I even love the text chat and some of the humour...

Bonnie, just click on one of the hearme links and see what happens. All being well, you will be prompted to accept a licence agreement and a very short download will start automatically and after that, you will be able to acess hearme. I guess the only thing you may need is a microphone.

DaveO, have you tried the uninstall/ install method suggested by hearme and also, if you use Netscape, it may be worth considering trying Internet Explorer instead as it appears that there are some problems with the Navigator/Hearme combination that Hearme don't know how to solve.

All sounds like it must be great - but the time differential gets in the way. 7.30pm for the near end of America becomes 12.30am for me, 9pm becomes 2am. And I suppose doing it the other way 7.30pm for me is 2.30 for you lot.

Singing into my PC at 2am wouldn't get me too popular at home, even if I'm still awake...

Maybe breakfast-time some weekend? Or lunchtime, as we'd call it.

I'll try the IE approach, much as I hate having to do with anything from MacroHype.

Jon, I've been playing email tag with HearMe support, so called. They've blamed my ISP for not having PPP, which they do. They blame a firewall, which I don't have. They say to remove transparent caching, which I don't have. They say remove splitters from my modem-to-phone-line connection, which I don't have. They suggest it's internet traffic conditions, which won't wash because the condition is constant 24 hours, ever since last Friday. They have suggested that the trouble is in my modem, but as you know I have been able to access your HearMe regularly with the same modem, with no changes of equipment or software at a time that could relate to the sudden lack of ability to access.

I asked yesterday if uninstalling and reinstalling would help, but they have not given me an answer.

They have not suggested that it's Netscape, although I've given them full details of my setup.

Well, I'll hold my nose and try IE, see if it makes a difference.

It is weird Dave, the uninstall/ install and the IE aproach are both mentioned in the Hearme FAQ but their own support seem to know nothing about it. Judging by the comments I have read and received, it apears that their tech support department is next to useless.

Dave O -- I downloaded and got into Hearme without a problem. My problem came in trying to get back on to the internet after I had to shut it down. 2 1/2 hours later I went into My Computer SEction and found the downloaded files. I blew them away and finally got back on the internet to get to the mudcat. There definately is something wrong somewhere.

But in spite of the problems in getting back, I had a great time listening to the music and reading the text. I guess I will have to come back again, and again and again

Could someone give some very basic HOW TO directions on connecting with Hearme. I am a technoidiot and need very simple step-by-step instructions. I would be greatful if someone wold do this. I have a mircophone but it is not hooked up.

Would a c-clamp work to hold down the F9 key? I'm assuming that is necessary when transmitting.

Thanks in advance for the help. I can't wait to be part of Hearme.

Kyle

Well, Bon, I think you already know how much I rave about HearMe...I live in a fairly isolated way and dn't get out much...my being able to HearYou and sing, too has introduced me to my very first *song circle* outside of family and it has been wonderful....I tell friends and send links to them until they finally give in and say okay, okay I'll check it out sometime...hopefully they will. Like you did tonight.*BG*

Now, for those of you who are teckkies...I use IE, but since I accepted the upgrade Creator...my sound is tinny and crackly like blown out speakers but I checked on my CD player and Mudcat Radio and my speakers are fine. I've also fiddled with my adio config. and my mediarack to no avail..any suggestions? Unload and reload the whole thing?

Thanks! Oh, and Bonnie....call his bluff! Just show up with teh white socks and do it!**BG**

Kyle, go to the box which says Filter at the top of the threads and enter in "HearMe", then set the Age to 90 days or so, then hit GO. There are several threads which give the basics, from whne we all first discovered it and started learning it. If you have any questions or can't find the threads give one of us a holler and we'll be sure to help you. BTW, it doesn't cost a thing to join as a member and then you can get and send personal messages with "udder Mudders". And, WELCOME TO THE MUDCAT!

I forgot to say how superb the music and talent and stories are and that it is also a nice audible way to share all of you and the Mudcat with my family who listen in when they are around! Thanks!

What a great place. Been lurking for a while. Thanks for the offer to help if I need it after going through all the threads. Can't wait to get connected. Maybe simplified instructions could be put in the FAQ permathread.

The first time I heard people singing on HearMe was an emotional experience! It was like you all came alive for me. I love that people on opposite sides of the world can sing for one another. I also find it easier to sing to you all if I'm not in front of you as I hate singing solo to a physical audience.

HearMe has given me enormous pleasure and I've learnt loads, and discovered new songs (inlcuding Midchuck singing "Old Blevins"!), and I have been late to work several times due to being addicted to the thing.

HOW INDEED,
You see before you (or maybe you don't)a hoplessly addicted, Hearme-ite.
I blame alison for this.
It was she who sent me the neccessery stuff to get on the thing(Understand I am a man of little knowledge when it comes to these things).,br> YES, it is a little hard to get it up and running, don't know how I would have done it on my own.
But now Hearme is a friend to me, it lets me hold hands with the world,in ways I never knew possible.
I love sessions and have to try and fit them in with my shift work, so what a treat to find friends to sing and play with and listen to.
My wife has been away and I normally find myself at a loose end at such times.
Tonight I spoke to her on the phone and raved about the great time I have been having, I think I hurt her feelings, how could she possibly understand something so intimate and yet so seperate,Long live Hearme.
A BIG THANK YOU for getting me on.
Come on in, its worth the trouble.
Spider Tom

Have you ever regretted a posting?
Just one word 'underwear' and I have Catspaw's attention like a bee around spilled jam.
I must speak with Karen. She must not be giving you enough attention or something Catspaw.

When I was younger, my dad would always complain about us having a live in maid. He did not like it because he could not walk around the house in his underwear.
That was all I was thinking about Catspaw. My dad and his dream of prancing around our home freely in his underwear.

Look, I don't wear underwear so that wasn't on my mind.

So which weekend works out best for you?
