Subject: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: Homeless Date: 18 May 00 - 08:21 PM Apologies if this overlaps an existing thread. I know that there are some that are similar out there, but I'm looking for something specific here. Having grown up on 70's rock, I've noticed the number of covers done by Zep, George Thorogood, Foghat, etc. I decided I wanted to find out what what the originals sounded like, and so starting to explore the blues. I've dug in to some of the early stuff and listened to Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor, Amos Milburn, among others. Very recently however, I've been exposed to Hot Tuna, Johnny Winter, Pat Travers, UFO, Robin Trower. I've found that I really like what I've heard by all these fellows. (But I distinctly do not like Stevie Ray Vaughn) My first question is, are the latter three considered blues? Second question is, can anyone with similar tastes recommend other groups I might want to look into? |

Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: Rick Fielding Date: 19 May 00 - 12:51 AM Hi Homeless, I'd check out Paul Butterfield. They were the first white electric Chicago blues band to get a lot of attention. Decent stuff. Rick |

Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: GUEST,Syd, Ottawa Date: 19 May 00 - 12:57 AM It's also worth listening to some of the earlier blues players like Robert Johnson whose songs have been covered by Cream, Fleetwood Mac, the Faces, the Stones, Eric Clapton etc. He really is a master. There is a CBS double CD available of his complete recordings. I understand Eric Clapton was responsible for bringing his work to the attention of other blues and rock musicians Syd |
Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: GUEST,Zev Date: 19 May 00 - 12:57 AM anything or all of the following: Rory Gallagher (Live) Keef Hartley ("Halfbreed") Edgar Winter Live (with Rick Derringer) Allman Brothers ("Live At The Fillmore") John Mayall ("Blues From Laurel Canyon", and many others) BB King ("Live At Cook County Jail") McKenna Mendelson ("Mainline") Crowbar Marshall Tucker Band (a few examples)

Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 May 00 - 02:06 AM How about early Fleetwood Mac(Peter Green era),Mayall's Bare Wires with Clapton, Canned Heat, Savoy Brown, first few Stones albums, Yardbirds, Eric Burden and the Animals, Moby Grape(1st album), Janis Joplin's Pearl, and Clapton with Derek and the Dominoes' Layla ? |
Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: GUEST Date: 19 May 00 - 12:06 PM Chris Duarte - Tailspin Headwhacker (Texas blues-based Master of the Stratocaster) Gov't Mule (Warren Haynes on guitar, who also does a lot of collaborations with other blues artists) - Gov't Mule; Dose; Life Before Insanity Greg Martin (guitarist for The Kentucky Headhunters, primarily a country band, but Martin has his roots in blues) The Toxic Prophets (soon to be released - check out Martin's website here or www.gregmartin.com ... The blurb for this latest project says, "If you're into 70's drenched rock/blues guitar with psychedelic sensibilities...get your lavalamp out of the attic now!" Delaney Bramlett - of Delaney and Bonnie fame. Showed Clapton a thing or two...he was buds with the late Duane Allman (amongst other luminaries) and spent many an hour jamming on the back porch with Duane (too bad they didn't record some of it for posterity). Mostly does slide work these days. |
Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: Jon W. Date: 19 May 00 - 12:08 PM Look for "The History of Eric Clapton" album - it has some collaborations with Page and others that probably isn't on anything else. And how about Jimi Hendrix's "Red House" (straight up blues) and "Hey Joe" (not strictly blues but the same feeling). Ten Years After also did some bluesy stuff. |
Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: Brakn Date: 19 May 00 - 12:30 PM Lonesome, I think Mayall's Bares Wires was with Mick Taylor. |
Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: Whistle Stop Date: 19 May 00 - 12:42 PM If you're following up on GUEST,Zev's suggestions, I would suggest an alternate BB King recording. "Live at Cook County Jail" is pretty good, but "Live at the Regal" really set the standard. |
Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: Homeless Date: 19 May 00 - 04:13 PM Thanx everyone. This is enough to keep me going for a while. I've already heard some of them that were in the rock spotlight, e.g. Clapton, Allmans, early Fleetwood Mac, but there are more here that I've either never heard of or never listened to. I think I've got some serious album hunting to do this weekend. |
Subject: RE: 70s Blues Band suggestion wanted From: BlueJay Date: 19 May 00 - 04:53 PM If you can find it, listen to Jesse Colin Young's "Soul of a City Boy". Tremendous stuff. One of my main regrets in life is that I didn't purchase the CD while it was briefly available. The album was recorded in 1964 or 1965, well before any Youngbloods stuff. Jesse singing mostly blues on solo guitar. If any of you have a copy you canspare, I'll give you fifty bucks for it. PM me. Or maybe a letter writing campaign. It's been done before. Norman Blake's classic "Live at McCabe's" was re-issued after a prolonged e-mail attack on the record company. Unfortunately, I don't know which record company would be responsible for the JCY album. But it could be possible to reequest a re-issue of the album. Thanks, BlueJay |
