Subject: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 20 May 00 - 12:06 AM Well, I lost the exact quote I was going to put in here, so I'll attempt to paraphrase. And, it was by some woman. In a young boy, lying about something will get him in trouble; when a man begins to court the ladies lying becomes an asset; and, in a married man it is second nature!**BG** |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: JenEllen Date: 20 May 00 - 01:26 AM LOL kat! I dunno about THAT. If you can scrape the jerk off of the business end of my frying pan, you could ask him what he thinks? She with the swing McGwire only dreams of, ~Elle |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: Peter T. Date: 20 May 00 - 11:04 AM In my limited experience, I have found that women are much better liars than men, from a very early age. They pick their spots, tell them quite casually, and give no signals. This is particularly true when telling men how wonderful they are, asking about their hobbies, laughing at their stories, and so on. But they are also brilliant deep liars, telling complete falsehoods, often to themselves. Most of the men I know give themselves away, their lies are pathetically obvious or cliches, and they enjoy telling them too much if they are good at them. Irish men are reputed to be the best liars, but (speaking as someone of this heritage) they tell the truth so seldom that they undermine their credibility from the outset. I have not known any Irish women (except my mother) in any detail, and my mother never told a lie in her life, as far as I know. But I imagine an Irish woman on the prowl would make a spectacular liar. I would certainly enjoy meeting one. [He now puts on his plutonium-resistant outfit] yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: Sailor Dan Date: 20 May 00 - 06:47 PM Peter T. Having walked the path you describe in your delightful commmentary (more then once) and being of the Irish persuassion (only once) and having had to duck or take the frying pan that Jan Ellen with the McGuire swing (Many times more then once)is using, I have come upon a solution that benefits me to the hilt. It doesn't win me many friends and it doesn't endear me to a lot of causes. But it satisfies my soul and my brain and my heart. I sincerely tell the truth. The reasons for this are as follows, 1, If I told a lie, I would eventually tell a second one. 2 If I told a second one, I would tell a third to cover the first or the second. etc etc etc. My major problem was, when dealing with 5 seperate women I forgot which one I told what lie to henceforth came Jan Ellens famous swing from at least 5 different directions and my poor head couldn't take it anymore. So I got rid of four of the five, married the other one and just told the plain old truth from then on. Peace and Quiet reigns, The wounds have healed, the eyes have turned blue again (from Black) and I am learning to play the banjo. What more could a man ask for?? Except another pint of Guiness in the town of Cork. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: Peter T. Date: 20 May 00 - 07:12 PM Now, kat, you shouldn't be mauling the Surgeon General like that: isn't it your health he's worrying about, the poor man, and him with the whole shebang knockin on his door at all hours askin him to come and listen to the daughter's croup? You are right there, Dan, telling the truth does make your life a whole lot simpler, especially as you get older and start losing brain cells. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 20 May 00 - 08:04 PM There are the hard facts and there are lies.
But in between there's a lot of room for other things that aren't exactly lies or hard facts. I like to avoid going to extremes myself, so that tends to be where I feel at home. And I think most of the time, that's where the truth is found. Or you might say, that's where the truth lies.
What I mean is, if you're telling a story, you are telling it for a reason, so you will likely need to adjust it a bit so that it makes more sense. If changing a few details and modifying the facts helps that, it may even be more truthful. (And it's interesting that "telling a story" can mean "telling a lie".)
I don't think there's any real difference of degree between men and women when it comes to telling the truth and improving the truth. There may be differences in how we go about doing it, and why we do it, and when we do it - but I'm not even sure about that.
As for the Irish bit - I think a lot of that comes from the fact that the Irish language doesn't have the words "Yes" and "No". And that carries over into people from an Irish background who are generations removed from talking Gaelic. And when you are always saying "It is" or "It isn't" instead of "Yes" and "No", that can sound evasive to some people. And it can help you be a bit evasive when you need to be... |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: JenEllen Date: 20 May 00 - 10:36 PM kat, if you get ahold of that there Surgeon General, how's about getting 'em to make the warning labels for people and not inanimate objects? Honestly, which do you think a person needs more protection from?? ain't got a thing if she ain't got that swing.. ~Elle |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 May 00 - 06:28 PM McGuire swing?? I haven't a clue what that is, and I tell no lie. It's a big planet. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the Day - May 20, 2000 From: JenEllen Date: 21 May 00 - 08:05 PM McGrath; Mark McGwire is an American baseball player with the ability to hit a ball over the fence with, essentially, what looks to be little or no effort on his part. No one has found any of the baseballs to ask them their take on the experience. ;) ~Elle |

Mark is already something like 5 home runs ahead of last year, and has just passed Mickey Mantle on the all time home run list. yours, Peter T. |
