HELP!! A great friend of mine has sung me this phrase, and I'm desperate to find the song for him...not sure if it's the title or not, but it goes..."out in the wide world, Willie, out in the wide world, Willie..." he sings it with an Irish/Scottish accent, and it sort of sounds like it might be a sea shanty, but I've really no clue!! PLEASE HELP!!! Great thanks!

I'm working, I'm workinng, Clinton! I still haven't been able to completely determine the cause of multiple posts and multiple thread creation. Those of us who are true computer geeks never make misteaks like that (we just cant spel). I think it has to do with using the "back" and "refresh" buttons on your browser, in conjunction with creating a thread.
For obvious reasons, I haven't experimented with this, because I can't delete threads - but I'm editing the extra threads as fast as I can and linking them to this one.

Yeah, it's certainly not Paulito's fault. I think we should give him a medal for coming up with so many multiple threads (better yet, we should give him an answer to his question).
We've always had a problem with multiple posts, but Max gave some of us edit buttons long ago and we can handle those easily. It's only recently that multiple threads became a problem - it has something to do with the changes Max made in the thread creation process. I'm sure Max will come up with a solution soon.

What's really a killer is when my own ISP is slow, and I'm desperately trying to keep ahead of people who are posting multiple replies to multiple threads.

Oh, Susan, I'm glad you "fessed up" and told us how the problem is created. Don't mind my teasing you - I'm really glad I finally know how it works. It's really hard to solve a problem when you can't duplicate it.

Let me chime in as test subject two... I'm spoiled and on DSL, so when I hit the "submit" button, and it locked up, I gave it about 30 seconds and hit "Stop" and "Submit" again. Wound up with a dupe thread.

This is clearly a mistake - and a very easy one to do too, though I am impressed by the persistantce shown by Guest Paulito - most of us in that situation would just push the button a couple of times and give up.

But I have the nasty feeling that the same thing might be tried by some joker who feels like screwing us up, and there are a few of those around from time to time. I think it would be helpful to have some way of protecting the Mudcat if that happens. It'd just take a few minutes and every thread in sight would be pushed off the page, and it could get really confusing.

"Out in the wide world Willie" - sounds like it might be a hymn of some kind.

Being naturally dense, it took me a while to figure out what you were doing with all those "refresh" messages, Susan. Deleting the extra threads would be a more elegant solution, but your solution worked darn well. Thanks.
It always used to bug me that my daughter, who is amazingly intelligent, could be so dense, so slow to catch on to things. Then I figured out that I'm just the same. Ever since, I've come to really admire that child. A "chip off the old block," she is. Most of the time, she hasn't got a clue. Neither have I.

I've asked around and like the Preformatted Text thing I brought up a few weeks ago.. this multi thread thing could be fixed with "A few small lines of code and a tweak to the cookie"... (so I'm told... But what do I know)...

I know plenty of other boards that can tell if you're resubmitting the exact same post as previous and won't let you do it...

Maybe so, Clinton - but remember that Max runs this site just for the fun of it, and he has to spend time making a living somehow. He can't fix everything all at once - and everything he fixes seems to have unexpected side effects. The phenomenon of multiple thread creation is the side effect of something else. It didn't happen back in the days when the Forum wasn't as complex as it is now.

(I 'heard') a non-sactioned release of various Joan
Baez performances from the early (?) 1960s. I had a
copy of the album before it joined about 350 others
to become a big ball of goo when my aunt's house
burned. Also on the album was a tune called
"Lowlands," and a couple or more duets. Hadn't

Out in the Wide World Kitty is a Josef Mirais and Miranda song from their 1950-60 era albums -- dunno which one. From memory the verse goes:

My Kitty sailed away from me,
To far and distant lands
And when I asked a goodbye jiss
She said, oh, no! Shake hands

ANd I believe the last choris line was "Kitty o'er the sea". If this is th esong as Paulito heard it, it would have been a South Afrikaans accent, not a Scottish or Irish one, but an understandable guess if one natively speaks Spanish.

At this point it's not clear whether there are two songs we are after, one about Kitty and one about Willy, or just one, with the name varying maybe (whicy I suspect is probably the case).

Either way, there's at least one first rate song in need of tracking down. So far as Kitty is concerned, South Africa sounds as if itws where to look - no luck so far, though I found this site , with some great Nursery Rhymes in Afrikaans with English translations.

If I find anything I'll report. But don't leave it to me, if you've any ideas/

Very similar arrangement to the Mirais and Miranda duet. My guess is that it is an Afrikaans song, but I could be biased by having first heard M&M sing it in their charming S.A. accents. All I can honestly say is I heard it there first, FWIW. Anyway, as is so often the case with Joanie, no willy was involved.

Thanks Tiger. If someone can put a sound file up of it, it's be great to hear it. Mirais and Miranda records aren't exactly common around here. And I can't see many copies of "Folksingers Around Harvard Square" either.

The "Pretty Kitty" line seems to suggest that the Willie song might be another song, rather than just a variation or m ishearing. I mean if you heard someone singing "Pretty Willie" you'd surely not think it might be a sea shanty. "Hello Sailor!" indeed...

it also says that it is African/traditional,
so, Amos, you guess right.
