Subject: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: GUEST,Paulito Date: 22 May 00 - 01:43 PM HELP!! A great friend of mine has sung me this phrase, and I'm desperate to find the song for him...not sure if it's the title or not, but it goes..."out in the wide world, Willie, out in the wide world, Willie..." he sings it with an Irish/Scottish accent, and it sort of sounds like it might be a sea shanty, but I've really no clue!! PLEASE HELP!!! Great thanks! |
Subject: Mega-multiple thread From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 00 - 01:49 PM Please use this thread, not the others. See, Max, I TOLD you we needed to be able to delete threads. <grin> -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: wysiwyg Date: 22 May 00 - 01:50 PM Shouldn't I refresh them over the next few days to be sure each one gets answered? *BG* ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 22 May 00 - 01:57 PM I think this guy needs to be banned, deleted and mutilated as a apammer!! Where's a moderator when you need one!!!

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Gary T Date: 22 May 00 - 02:01 PM NINETEEN dupicate posts? How in the heck did that happen? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 00 - 02:02 PM I'm working, I'm workinng, Clinton! I still haven't been able to completely determine the cause of multiple posts and multiple thread creation. Those of us who are true computer geeks never make misteaks like that (we just cant spel). I think it has to do with using the "back" and "refresh" buttons on your browser, in conjunction with creating a thread. For obvious reasons, I haven't experimented with this, because I can't delete threads - but I'm editing the extra threads as fast as I can and linking them to this one. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: wysiwyg Date: 22 May 00 - 02:03 PM NOOOO---- when the ISP is on slow, the SUBMIT button appears locked, and if you're new, you keep pushing it. And thus resubmitting it. No need to gomorrahfy the poor guy, now, he can see for himself how this went, and how quickly the multiples sink off the page. Cuz Mudcat can handle anything! ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 00 - 02:14 PM Yeah, it's certainly not Paulito's fault. I think we should give him a medal for coming up with so many multiple threads (better yet, we should give him an answer to his question). We've always had a problem with multiple posts, but Max gave some of us edit buttons long ago and we can handle those easily. It's only recently that multiple threads became a problem - it has something to do with the changes Max made in the thread creation process. I'm sure Max will come up with a solution soon. Won't you, Max???? What's really a killer is when my own ISP is slow, and I'm desperately trying to keep ahead of people who are posting multiple replies to multiple threads. Oh, Susan, I'm glad you "fessed up" and told us how the problem is created. Don't mind my teasing you - I'm really glad I finally know how it works. It's really hard to solve a problem when you can't duplicate it. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: SeanM Date: 22 May 00 - 02:38 PM Let me chime in as test subject two... I'm spoiled and on DSL, so when I hit the "submit" button, and it locked up, I gave it about 30 seconds and hit "Stop" and "Submit" again. Wound up with a dupe thread. M |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: wysiwyg Date: 22 May 00 - 02:42 PM Who's fessin'? Ah hardly evah do dat Joe! ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 May 00 - 02:45 PM This is clearly a mistake - and a very easy one to do too, though I am impressed by the persistantce shown by Guest Paulito - most of us in that situation would just push the button a couple of times and give up.
But I have the nasty feeling that the same thing might be tried by some joker who feels like screwing us up, and there are a few of those around from time to time. I think it would be helpful to have some way of protecting the Mudcat if that happens. It'd just take a few minutes and every thread in sight would be pushed off the page, and it could get really confusing.
"Out in the wide world Willie" - sounds like it might be a hymn of some kind. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 May 00 - 02:47 PM Or maybe a temperance song? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: wysiwyg Date: 22 May 00 - 02:48 PM Well, no big deal, really, Joe is editing in links to the one live thread and it only took 45 minutrs to drown the dupes in a refreshing flood. Joe, did I beat ya? ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: wysiwyg Date: 22 May 00 - 02:49 PM Of course I took time out to answer two PM's!

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 00 - 02:54 PM Being naturally dense, it took me a while to figure out what you were doing with all those "refresh" messages, Susan. Deleting the extra threads would be a more elegant solution, but your solution worked darn well. Thanks. It always used to bug me that my daughter, who is amazingly intelligent, could be so dense, so slow to catch on to things. Then I figured out that I'm just the same. Ever since, I've come to really admire that child. A "chip off the old block," she is. Most of the time, she hasn't got a clue. Neither have I. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 22 May 00 - 03:48 PM I've asked around and like the Preformatted Text thing I brought up a few weeks ago.. this multi thread thing could be fixed with "A few small lines of code and a tweak to the cookie"... (so I'm told... But what do I know)... I know plenty of other boards that can tell if you're resubmitting the exact same post as previous and won't let you do it... |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: catspaw49 Date: 22 May 00 - 03:58 PM Actually, I've been having a lot of fun going around to Praise's refreshers and making cracks about them!!! But that is how the multiples happen Joe. If things are moving a bit slowly, it looks like your post or thread isn't being accepted and instead of waiting for a 404 or something, they hit the submit again. AND PRAISE---Its OK if we let Clinton gommorahfy Paulito. We'll just let Paulito sodomize Clinton. Spaw |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 00 - 04:36 PM Maybe so, Clinton - but remember that Max runs this site just for the fun of it, and he has to spend time making a living somehow. He can't fix everything all at once - and everything he fixes seems to have unexpected side effects. The phenomenon of multiple thread creation is the side effect of something else. It didn't happen back in the days when the Forum wasn't as complex as it is now. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Tiger Date: 22 May 00 - 05:36 PM Paulito.... I have an old one from Joan Baez that goes:
Out in the wide world, Kitty,
My Kitty sailed away from me Beautiful song. Could this be the one? ......Tiger |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 22 May 00 - 08:16 PM Whether it is or not, I'd like that song, Tiger, for my daughter Kitty. Could you point me to it? |

I'd love to have those words, too. That was on Giac |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Amos Date: 23 May 00 - 01:11 AM Out in the Wide World Kitty is a Josef Mirais and Miranda song from their 1950-60 era albums -- dunno which one. From memory the verse goes: My Kitty sailed away from me, |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 May 00 - 06:58 AM Refresh. Keep hunting for Kitty please. I want that song! (And Paulito clearly does as well - I hope he hasn't slunk away in embarrassment after the multiple posts. Honest Paulito, it's all right, you are welcome here!) |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Alice Date: 23 May 00 - 10:26 AM So, we have part of the Kitty song... does anyone have the Wide World Willie song to answer this question? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: wysiwyg Date: 23 May 00 - 03:15 PM Spaw!!! Re: AND PRAISE---Its OK if we let Clinton gommorahfy Paulito. Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 May 00 - 05:59 PM At this point it's not clear whether there are two songs we are after, one about Kitty and one about Willy, or just one, with the name varying maybe (whicy I suspect is probably the case).
Either way, there's at least one first rate song in need of tracking down. So far as Kitty is concerned, South Africa sounds as if itws where to look - no luck so far, though I found this site , with some great Nursery Rhymes in Afrikaans with English translations.
If I find anything I'll report. But don't leave it to me, if you've any ideas/ |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Giac Date: 23 May 00 - 06:14 PM Remembered another verse:

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 May 00 - 06:29 PM Getting there . Keep coming up with the words Giac, and anyone else. (And I take it that should have been a goodbye kiss/)
Any hints for a tune? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: GUEST,Paulito Date: 24 May 00 - 10:47 AM Such vilification for a guest to your site!!! I'm no geek, fer' sure, but, just so you know, and if it will help with the multiple submission problem, I DID NOT press 'SUBMIT' multiple times...only once. I was astonished when all those threads lined up! Good luck with the site, I think it's very interesting. Thanks to those who are actually trying to help me find the song...and to the vilifiers... live and learn, okay? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: catspaw49 Date: 24 May 00 - 10:58 AM I see you're still having some problem there Paulito. Maybe Joe can figure out what you're doing or what's causing it. And just ignore Clinton Hammond, he probably needed a place to vent his spleen as he has a big spleen. "Out in the Widw World Willie?" Is this a song about a guy exposing himself or what? Just wondering..... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: catspaw49 Date: 24 May 00 - 11:04 AM Of course, looking on the bright side.......As I recall your original post created 11 threads, whereas this time you only had 10 postings...So things are improving!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 24 May 00 - 12:43 PM Thanks ever so much for dismissing me for expressing my concerns... Maybe I'll start DIRECTING spammers to this place... How d'ya like me NOW?!?!?! {~` |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 May 00 - 01:30 PM I note that all the multiple postings are marked as 10.47 - if Paulito had been pushing Submit repeatedly, at least some of them would have been 10.48 or 10.49. So it must be something else in Paulito's compouter or more likely I suspect, his ISP. I hope it's not catching. It doesn't bear thinking of...
And don't worry about the vilification. All basically in good fun.And it seems fairly clear now it's not your fault Paulito.
It had occurred to me it might be a song about the President.
Out in the wide world Willie, No, I don't really think so.

Subject: Lyr Add: KITTY (Joan Baez & Bill Wood) From: Tiger Date: 24 May 00 - 01:30 PM Sorry I was away and missed the interest in Kitty. It's from an old "Folksingers Around Harvard Square" album from the late 50s. She sings this with Bill Wood, and it's beautiful. You have to hear it to believe it, maybe I can make an MP3 or sumpin'. I'll bet the spacing doesn't come out right to show the separation of the parts, so I promise in advance to make an HTML version. Here are the complete lyrics: Kitty -- Joan Baez & Bill Wood
CHORUS
My Kitty sailed away from me, CHORUS
When Kitty left, she said she'd write. CHORUS BOTH HUM (1 STANZA) CHORUS Bill Joan |
Subject: Lyr Add: KITTY (Joan Baez & Bill Wood) From: Tiger Date: 24 May 00 - 01:42 PM OK - This should be better....Tig KITTY -- Joan Baez & Bill Wood CHORUSMy Kitty sailed away from me, To strange and distant lands, And when I asked a good-bye kiss, She said: "Oh, no, shake hands." Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Amos Date: 24 May 00 - 03:23 PM Very similar arrangement to the Mirais and Miranda duet. My guess is that it is an Afrikaans song, but I could be biased by having first heard M&M sing it in their charming S.A. accents. All I can honestly say is I heard it there first, FWIW. Anyway, as is so often the case with Joanie, no willy was involved. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 May 00 - 04:01 PM Thanks Tiger. If someone can put a sound file up of it, it's be great to hear it. Mirais and Miranda records aren't exactly common around here. And I can't see many copies of "Folksingers Around Harvard Square" either.
The "Pretty Kitty" line seems to suggest that the Willie song might be another song, rather than just a variation or m ishearing. I mean if you heard someone singing "Pretty Willie" you'd surely not think it might be a sea shanty. "Hello Sailor!" indeed...
So one down, one to go.

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: Giac Date: 24 May 00 - 04:43 PM On one of the Joan Baez sites, it only lists the songs on the album that Tiger noted, but it also says that it is African/traditional, so, Amos, you guess right.
Guess we couldn't come up with more verses because |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: wysiwyg Date: 24 May 00 - 05:12 PM Paulito, you have the makings of a true Mudcat Member. When vilified, vilify back! Trust me, no one here is as much of an arseh*le as they try to appear to be. Well, except for..... you know who you are. Some of us just call each other A1, A2, see, just to remember we are all merely human, even here in Mudcat Heaven. Yeah. No more new names for new members. Just A and their number. New members, take a number. Yep. Could work. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 May 00 - 08:26 PM A for a....... Well, since we're in a South African context it could be aardvark. And as they say, a little aardvark never hurt nobody. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 25 May 00 - 08:09 PM Willie is sinking off the page, and we haven't found his song yet. Probably. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Out in the Wide World, Willie From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 May 00 - 03:45 PM Still sinking. Rise again.
