Subject: MUDCATEERS IN ALASKA??? From: WyoWoman Date: 10 Jun 00 - 02:36 PM I'm going to be in Alaska in July and wonder if there are Mudcateers there I might meet up with? My dates are July 20-August 1, but I'll be riding my bike for several of those days. However, if you're there, I'd love to see if there's a way to hook up. WyoWoman |

Subject: RE: MUDCATEERS IN ALASKA??? From: Ebbie Date: 10 Jun 00 - 03:21 PM WW, where in Alaska will you be? Most of Alaska's population lives in the Anchorage area- which is 500+ air miles from Juneau and about 300 miles from Fairbanks. We in Juneau know lots of musicians in those areas- thanks to the Alaska Folk Festival- but I don't know if they know the Mudcat... (BTW, in Sitka there is a dance band called 'Fishing for Cats'!)I know of a couple 'Catters in Juneau who would be delighted to meet you and to introduce you to other musicians here, if your time frame permits. Subject: RE: MUDCATEERS IN ALASKA??? From: WyoWoman Date: 11 Jun 00 - 09:53 AM Ebbie, I'll be coming to Anchorage, then going up to ride my bike across the Denali Highway. Then back for a couple of side trips on the bike, but I think those are in the Anchorage area as well. Know anybody there? Thanks, WW |

Subject: RE: MUDCATEERS IN ALASKA??? From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 12 Jun 00 - 07:50 PM I have some chums in Soldotna who usually work in the Denali/Kantishna area in the summer. I'll try to check if they're doing that this year - they'd have room for you in a tent or RV and they really know the territory. They are not Mudcatters because they have not yet tuned in to the net, but one in particular is heavily tuned into Mudcat music. Have you got the Alaska Bicycle Touring Guide, published by Denali Press? Also John McPhee wrote a maagnificent book about Alaska called Coming Into the Country. IF you haven't found it already, it really is worth reading. I pedalled about 2,000 miles in Alaska a couple of years ago. I can't think of anywhere I've been that made a bigger impression, and I'll certainly be back - despite a guilty coscience about us tourists screwing up the world's last natural ecosystems outside the polar regions. You're going to have a real adventure - just a pity you won't be there longer. Send me a personal message if you have any queries I might be able to help with before you go, or if you care to compare notes afterwards. |
