Interesting... I never knew there was a US version of Something to Sing About! The original has a fond spot in my heart. My mother arranged it 4-part barbershop style, with Mr. Brand's permission and blessing, for her women's barbershop chorus to sing at its annual show and other performances during Canada's Centennial Year celebrations (1967).

Here's a YouTube video of the "Canadian version" of "This Land Is Your Land":Apparently, the "Canadian version" uses Woody's verses with an altered chorus, posted above and in many other threads. Rick Fielding, Canada's greatest Woody Guthrie fan, hated this alteration of Woody's classic song. He's probably spinning in his grave at this very moment. But hey, he needs the exercise.... (sorry, Rick. Spaw made me do it. May both of you rest in peace and in our memories)

Dr. Word, I consolidated most or all of our posts on Oscar Brand's "Something to Sing About" into this thread (click). I even bought Oscar Brand's songbook and transcribed both the US and Canadian versions in that thread. No, the song isn't in the Digital Tradition (there haven't been songs added to the DT for a number of years). However, we've done our best to index the songs posted in the Forum. The easiest way to find songs in the Forum is to use the Filter on the main Forum page. Put a distinctive word from the song title into the box and set the age back to "all," and click "refresh."
I still have an unanswered question about the "US" version of "Something to Sing About" that appears in the Rise Up Singing Songbook. I asked editor Peter Blood about it, and he doesn't recall.

B sweet if someone could put the Brand song into the DT. The prolific Canadian balladeer died last September ~ this lyric should be sung a whole bunch, at least as often as the "Canadianized" alteration of Guthrie's 'This land …'
Not that Canucks need an excuse to sing, but the OP refers to Canada Day, & this year is the 150th.
keep pickin'

@ GUEST,GitPickinGal

The post just before yours has the Canadian lyrics to Guthrie's song. (They were posted in 2011.)

Is it possible that you can't find it because it has another name? My friend is Canadian, and after finding out that yesterday was "Canada Day", I looked up their anthem on youtube and found a song called, "Something To Sing About", by Oscar Brand. Since it immediately made me think of "This Land Is Your Land", I think this might be what you are looking for:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHt1DgeRwuo

SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT
(source: "Jubilee Songbook", Girl Guides of Canada, 1971; words and music by Oscar Brand.)

I have walked on the strand of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland
Lazed on the ridge of the Miramichi
Seen the waves tear and roar on the stone coast of Labrador
Watched them roll back to the Great Northern Sea

I have welcomed the dawn from the fields of Saskatchewan
Followed the sun to the Vancouver shore
Watched it climb shiny new up the snow peaks of Caribou
Up to the clouds where the wild Rockies soar

Chorus: From the Vancouver Island to the Alberta Highland
'Cross the Prairies, the lakes to Ontario's towers
From the sound of Mount Royal's chimes, up to the Maritimes
Something to sing about, this land of ours

I have wandered my way to the wild wood of Hudson Bay
Treated my toes to Quebec's morning dew
Where the sweet summer breeze kissed the leaves of the maple trees
Sharing this song that I'm singing (sharing?) with you

I have felt in my heart something I thought might never start,
a song deep inside that I felt all along,
the (a?) voice of you and me that has grown into harmony,
giving this world a lesson in song.

Chorus: From the Vancouver Island to the Alberta Highland
'Cross the Prairies, the lakes to Ontario's towers
From the sound of Mount Royal's chimes, up to the Maritimes
Something to sing about, this land of ours

Yes there's something to sing about, tune up a string about
Call out in chorus or quietly hum
Of a land that's still young, with a ballad that's still unsung
Telling the promise of great things to come

Chorus: I'm talkin' Vancouver Island to the Alberta Highland
'Cross the Prairies, the lakes to Ontario's towers
From the sound of Mount Royal's chimes, up to the Maritimes
Something to sing about, this land of ours

Something to sing about.......
this...land...of...ours...........................

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another verse I found, but it's not on the video:
I have heard the wild wind sing the places that I have been
Bay Bull and Red Deer and Strait of Bells Isle
Names like Grand Mere and Silverthorne
Moose Jaw and Marrowbone,
Trails of the pioneer, named with a smile
This land is your land, This land is my land,
From Bonavista, to Vancouver Island
From the Arctic Circle to the Great Lakes waters,
This land was made for you and me.
...and...
I roamed and I rambled,
And I followed my footsteps
To the fir-clad forests
Of our mighty mountains
And all around me
A voice was calling,
This land was made for you and me.
What would you want Canadian words to "This Land Is Your Land" for, when you have "Northwest Passage," which is a much better song? Wanna swap?
Just my opinion.
Peter.
