Subject: Neil Young Alert From: Wesley S Date: 15 Jun 00 - 11:07 AM For those of you who are interested VH-1 will feature a 3 hour Neil Young extravaganza tonight - check your local listings. It will start off with a one hour retrospective of Neil. I understand that both his vocal coach and wardrobe consultant will be interviewed. Then a one hour concert tape { Silver and Gold } followed by a repeat of the first hours program. Catspaw - I'll be happy to tape the show and send it to you if you have to work at the institute tonight. |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Jun 00 - 11:12 AM Actually Wes, I was gonna try to watch, believe it or not. And VH1 has a way of showing these suckers repeatedly. I have to give them a lot of credit in their efforts for more than music video programming. They have quite a few series that are very well done. I assume they filmed this while Neil's meds were working and he was away from the Center. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Jun 00 - 02:32 PM Well actually 'nut, bashing ol' Neil is a kinda' pastime around here. Ain't got squat to do with his talent or lack thereof. I know its often struck nerves with Canadians, but that too had nothing to do with it. In fact I'd forgot about that entirely when I signed him on as the poster boy for the "Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed," which I located in Montana. I freely admit that I find him entertaining in the sense of watching him perform as much as listening. He is one of the most crazed looking mothers ever to strap on a guitar and I'm never sure whether he's playing or having an orgasm or both. He's written some good stuff and the CSN&Y reunion is wonderful listening. This still doesn't negate the fact that he's a Space Admiral. Ever been to his website? He has some real rabid fans too. I think they give out straightjackets with his picture instead of membership cards.....or they should. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Wesley S Date: 15 Jun 00 - 03:20 PM One thing I really admire about the man is that you have no idea what he'll do next. So many artists put out the same music over and over again but not Neil. He seems to re-invent himself every other year or so. I wish more artists had his sense of adventure. |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Mooh Date: 15 Jun 00 - 04:55 PM Rabid fans? Are you kidding? That doesn't begin to describe it. Until last year I played regularly (bass) in a Neil Young tribute band. I saw people with pictures of ol' Neil in their wallets, folks who could list Neil's set list from some concert or another, some even danced to "Transformer Man", and one woman thought she was actually communicating with Neil himself by staring at us. Our singer, Neil as it were, caught flack everywhere for not having sideburns. I like alot of his songs, but I'm relieved to know I'm not rabid. I don't foam at the mouth, just drool. Mooh. |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: sophocleese Date: 15 Jun 00 - 05:58 PM I still say that watching soccer is much more interesting... |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Jon W. Date: 15 Jun 00 - 06:22 PM Well I for one like a lot of what Neil has done as well as wonder a lot about what some of his lyrics mean (who was the old laughing lady anyway?) but as to what goes on between his ears, who knows? He doesn't ever seem to want to share it, whatever it is. And why aren't any pictures of him in focus? It seems like Timothy Leary had the same photogenic problems, too. |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Jun 00 - 11:09 PM A very well done program. Its hard not to have empathy and respect for some of his family situatioons and what he has done with and for, and learned from, his kids. He is still wacky as hell, but a guy that's had a helluva' ride in his own way, and done it his own way. Listening to him can be funnier than hell too, because there's a lot of Neil that Neil can't figure out and he's not sure of the other parts. But at times he spoke some fine beliefs and his commitment to family at this point in his life is quite worthy. On the other hand, let's not get too far afield here either........He still has that poster boy quality that makes him the pride of the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed.

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Kim C Date: 16 Jun 00 - 10:28 AM Spaw, I have never liked Neil Young, just because. Now Mister, having been a teenager in the 70s, was somewhat of a Neil young fan at one point, and delights in teasing me about not liking him. I just don't like the sound of his voice, is all. But certainly, those of you who do like him, proceed with vigour, just do it without me. :) |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Wesley S Date: 16 Jun 00 - 11:17 AM I was suprised to find out that his dad was a sportscaster { in the NHL hall of fame no less } and that Neil was part owner of the Lionel Train Co. It also looks like he has a nifty guitar collection too. |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Clifton53 Date: 16 Jun 00 - 11:40 AM Anyone who came of age in the late sixties, early seventies, and has listenened to "After the Gold Rush",or. "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere", probably has a soft spot for Neil Young, his voice notwithstanding. Agreed, "Hey Hey, My ,My", will be considered horseshit somewhere down the road, and his guitar solos may leave a bit to be desired, but as songwriters go, he ain't too effin bad! And I won't even mention his work with Buffalo Springfield, or "Needle and the Damage Done", or the rest of "Harvest". Indeed, he is an odd one, but the songs are there! Clifton53 |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Jon W. Date: 16 Jun 00 - 01:54 PM I bought "After the Gold Rush" and "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" both on the same day (1970, '71?) The guy behind me in line said "Hey, an Niel Young freak!" I wish I still had those albums. I disagree that his guitar solos leave a bit to be desired. He has his own style and no one else can (or at least does) do it. I don't listed to much rock anymore but I still get blown away by "Like a Hurricane" and "Cortez the Killer." He was on Jay Leno's show several years ago doing "Harvest Moon" and "Unknown Legend". After the songs he went and sat down to be interviewed but then spotted an electric train set behind the set. Rather than talk he just played with the trains. I guess the Lionel connection was coming out. Anyone who plays with electric trains can't be all bad. |

Subject: RE: Neil Young Alert From: Gypsy Date: 16 Jun 00 - 10:21 PM Don't care if he is crazy or not. That music...the man is truly an inspired writer. After all, Van Gogh taught all the world to see in yellow and blue, and he was as mad as a march hare! |
