Subject: chords for 'mermaid' & 'stoutest man' From: GUEST,Mark Date: 16 Jun 00 - 11:11 AM Looking for the chords for 'Mermaid', this version starts: 'When I was a lad in a fishing town, an old man said to me'. Also for 'The Stoutest Man in the Forty-Twa'. Both are Scottish traditional |

Subject: RE: chords for 'mermaid' & 'stoutest man' From: Richard Bridge Date: 16 Jun 00 - 06:44 PM I have a sneaking feeling that the FortyTwa is original Ian Bruce. I know he does it and I don't think he'd be as leery about one of the lines in it unless it was his. |

Subject: RE: chords for 'mermaid' & 'stoutest man' From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 17 Jun 00 - 10:50 PM The Stoutest Man In the Forty Twa appears in The Scottish Folksinger (Norman Buchan & Peter Hall, Collins 1973/8); no author is named, but it's credited as "from the singing of John Strachan". Pre- Ian Bruce, I should think. Chords are given; I haven't tried to do this before -not being a guitarist- so I'll use the method described by Walter Corey, and elaborated on by Alan of Australia in the recent thread Adding Chords to songs Behold I am a soldier bold, and only twenty five years old (G -C -G) A braver warrior never was seen fae Inverness tae Gretna Green. (C- G -C -G -D7) When I was young my father said he wad pit me tae a decent trade, (C -G -C -G) But I didnae like that job at a', so I went and joined the Forty Twa. (C -G -C -G -D7 -G) Malcolm |
