I was listening to the radio yesterday. Apparently they launched a Viking Dragon ship out of Reykjavik, Iceland. 19 men and 1 woman are headed on a 4 month trip to Newfoundland. I hope they will come down to Halifax for the Tall Ships event too!

Maybe Skarpi is on it?

I've heard that Portsmouth, New Hampshire will be visited by a Viking ship. I wonder if this is the one. (Slim possibility there's a whole fleet of 'em out there.)

This thread reminds me that 10 or more years ago a man named Robert Asp built a Viking ship in the basement of a building in Hawley, Minnesota (about 25 miles east of Fargo). When it was nearly done they had to knock out a wall of the building to extract the ship. It was classic ship in a bottle on a grand scale. Asp's dream didn't end there. They hauled it to Duluth on Lake Superior and took it out on the water for some test cruises. A couple of Asp's children and some other adventurous crew memebers the sailed the ship back to Norway. The ship was named the "Hjemkomst" which means "homecoming". After successfully reaching Norway, the ship was freighted back to the US and is on permanent display in a museum in Moorhead, Minnesota.

Oh hell!
Now we have to set about building round towers over here in New York, just in case!
Larry
My wife and I were in a restaurant in Momartre, Parris (sorry for the spelling) the next table were members the Norweegan Olympic Equestrian team. My wife and I told them we were mostlikely cousins, as we were Norman Irish, so Vikings way back. Well one got very dringk and began to serriously abuse the woman who was singing in the place and my wife was sitting on all five foot 10 of me to keep me from taking on this six foot seven giant eegit. I was trying to get his mates to riegn him in, to no avail so, I finally said, Oh I just rememberd, we Norman Irish are not Norweegan at all, we are decended from Danes, (not the favorites of the Norweegians) Well I am off to build a round tower, all the best brodder vikings safe voyage,

Folks, just read in the newspaper that the Viking Ship Iceland WILL be heading into Halifax harbor after reaching Newfoundland. And I'm pretty sure they're gonna try and make it in accordance with Tall Ships. After Halifax, they head on down to Boston, and then New York. They're sailing to commemorate the 1000 year anniversary of Leif Ericcson's famous journey.

George - I just read your statement again - are they REALLY sailing a DRAGON SHIP from Iceland to New Foundland? Until now I lived with the information only viking freighters were able to go High seas, Dragon Ships were too slim to stand more than coastal cruises, allthough they were much longer...

I understand that the St. Brendan thing is open to much speculation, especialy without any real hard evidence...

"Dragon ship's", I'm pretty sure is nopt a class of vessle, rather a broad description of the basic design of many of the scandanivian ships... most of their boats, from the big ocean going biggies to the wee paddle boats that helped get them into Russia were all pretty much the same design...

Damned effecient people if ya ask me!

As I understand it, this ship was built from a design found in excavations in Norway. It's a wooden ship, with a dragon's head at the prow, and 20 people, 19 are men. The little I heard, they were going to Newfoundland to the site of the ONLY documented Viking community in North America.

Since that first evening, I have heard they are now coming south to Halifax (hopefully for Tall Ships), and going at least to New York.

Sails and oars are it. I assume they've got some items which the Vikings didn't. I would hope GPS, Radio and emergency equipment as per current Maritime rules.

This is shaping up to be a MOST interesting summer.

Yup, Jeri, that's the one that will be in Portsmouth, NH in September. Merde! I just read the Herald article (actually from a month ago or so; I'm rather behind on my reading) yesterday, but my random access memory has gotten more and more random lately and I can't remember the details. (The paper is in the trash but not gone, so there's hope yet!)

Well, there is great proof of Brendan getting here. A few years ago my cousin was fishing off Beg inish in the Blaskets and anchord for awhile. When he pulled up the hook, there was an old wagon wheel on the fluke, thereby proving we were going to America over the road, before the flood.

Hey Skarpi,

Very glad you are OK! Stay careful for these next ones! Now, Iceland is not a place we associate with earthquakes. What's going on? Some old dormant volcano waking up?

Best wishes

Here is a link to information and pictures about the construction and voyage of the Viking ship "Hjemkomst" back in the 1980's. Note that the "Hjemkomst" and the "Icelander" were both patterned after the same excavated ship from the 800's. They can certainly sail the high seas as the Hjemkomst's journey from Duluth Minnesota to Bergen Norway deomstrated in 1982 and the "Icelander" will demonstrate this year in the opposite direction.
