From: Mooh Date: 22 Jun 00 - 08:59 AM ...at this moment, Amoya (from Mozambique) "Nweti"...but generally lately it's been Sue Foley and Roy Buchanan for blues, Simon Mayor, James Keelaghan, Smith and Hewson, Steeleye Span for folk, Bach of course, Led Zeppelin and Jeff Beck... ...all this is subject to change at any moment... Ears to the ground, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: L R Mole Date: 22 Jun 00 - 10:28 AM Tape I made of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (and Jonathan Miller and someone else) in "Beyond the Fringe":pre Monty-Python, fall-down funny Brit humor. Also Les McCann and Eddie Harris, "Compared to What" from "Swiss Movement" and trying to come up with an electric guitar arrangement for it. And getting absolutely nowhere. As Mose might say, my hand is on vacation but my hubris is working overtime. |
Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 22 Jun 00 - 10:35 AM Nothing at the moment (at work!). In the car on the way here I was listening to my Greek tapes (this time next week,if the 'plane is on time I'll be on a ferry en route from Kos to Kalymnos)but the last music CDs I listened to were Big Joe Turner, Sonny Boy Williamson (I) and Gus Cannon. Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: SDShad Date: 22 Jun 00 - 11:15 AM I've been on a major Guy Clark kick lately...mainly stuff off of "Old No. 1," but also some newer stuff like "The Cape," which is especially appropriate right now, since I have a challenging decision to make: this morning I was offered a job in a different department at the University for several thousand dollars more than an I'm currently making...but I really love the department I'm in, too. Its chorus is appropos, and it'd also be a candidate for a "Best Lines" thread:
Well he's one of those who knows that life Thanks for (re)starting this thread, Harpgirl! Shad |
Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: SINSULL Date: 22 Jun 00 - 11:42 AM At several MudCatters' suggestions I got a copy of Bryan Bowers autoharp video. For two days, I stared blankly at my instrument totally intimated (me not the 'harp). So I bought all of Bowers' CDs and have been filling my house with his music. Pure inspiration. I can perform a mean Row Your Boat now and will soon move on to Old MacDonald. Actually picking out "Hard Times" all by myself with some success. Feel a definite "groupie" crush coming on. My fellow inmates are begging me to move on to something other than the autoharp. But for now, it's pure Bryan. "I insulted my shoes with three kinds of booze" Spider Tom has got to this one on Hearme. Thank yous all around but especially to Harpgirl. Even Bryan doesn't get his harp to sing harmony with him. Some day you will have to share the secret. SS |

Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: Morticia Date: 22 Jun 00 - 12:53 PM My parents brought me back a recording from a guy called Sean Keane when they were home in Ireland recently, I'd never heard of him before, don't know if anyone else has..anyway, that's my current favourite. |
Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: Mbo Date: 22 Jun 00 - 01:11 PM Morticia, Sean Keane RULES!!! He's actually Dolores Keane's little brother, and incidentally one of my favorite Irish singers...I love his combo of Irish & English & Scottish folk and country music. It's from him I learned such songs as "Tunnel Tigers," "Galway to Graceland," "The Man From Connemara," "The Bundlin," "The Music of Healing," and his cover version of Joe Diffie's country hit "Home" (which I've been known to play a lot in HearMe, as well as these others). He did these at the Celtic Folk Festival at Wolftrap in 1997...awesome accordion from his band on "Home", just tears your heart up! BTW is the album "All Heart, No Roses"? Rock on, Morty, he's one cool dude! --Mbo |

From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 22 Jun 00 - 01:36 PM Been on a Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells 2" kick lately... and Jethro Tull's "A Little Light Music" for their arrangement of John Barleycorn (pretty much lifted from Traffic's version too! LOL!) and I feel a hankerin' fer some Steeleye Span coming on.. good music to listen to while I work my chainmaille and brew my mead.... And I've been trying Mbos' suggstion for the Song Of The Entwives, but I can't seem to make it work... You'll have to play it for me sometime at hearme... Have ya put anyother JRR songs to tunes that work well? {~` |

Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: Stewie Date: 22 Jun 00 - 07:06 PM Yesterday afternoon, I was listening to Martin Simpson's 'The Collection' - an artist I hadn't listened to in ages. It was so much better than I recalled that I looked on the net for what was available more recently and put in an order with my supplier for 'Cool and Unusual' on Red House Records which, from the track listing, appears to be a mainly traditional offering. Right now, I am listening to Slim Critchlow's CD 'The Crooked Trail to Holbrook' - great stuff! --Stewie. |

I really like his big sister Delores!! Also, Lui Collins. |
Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: WyoWoman Date: 22 Jun 00 - 08:24 PM Right this very moment I'm listening to Mudcateer Guy Wolff's "Music from Wolff Pottery" CD and feeling a bit wistful because my kid's dad used to play about half the repertoire on this CD. I'd listen to him playing softly in the living room as I drifted off to sleep at night. It was one of my favorite things about our marriage. (Not enough to hold it together, unfortunately, but lovely, drifty moments.) And for the past few days I've been wearing out a new CD I got of an absolutely spectacular flamenco guitarist named Miguel Espinoza. Yummy, passionate stuff. Wish I could dance properly to it instead of just sort of cavorting around in my sweats with my back held real straight and my arms looking like coat hangers... Another one I put in my CD player here while I'm working on my computer is by two Denver musicians, Pat Mendoza and Tom June. Good, relaxing music -- I bought my former massage therapist a copy and she played it whenever I'd go in for a massage. Lately I've been on a Natalie Merchant streak, listening in the car to one of her solo CDs and a 10,000 Maniacs CD (no, this is not a recording of all the Mudcateers in our little village...) WW

Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: rangeroger Date: 22 Jun 00 - 08:47 PM On my home CD changer right now: Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band "If I were a Bird" Joshua Bell & Edgar Meyer with Sam Bush & Mike Marshall "Short Trip Home" Mary McCaslin "Way Out West" Daniel Lanois " Acadie" John Prine "German Afternoons" BTW Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band are an absoluetly dynamite group out of Salt Lake City. They opened the Strawberry Music Festival this Spring and were a major hit. They combine Bluegrass with a lot of different styles and if any group could begin to fill the shoes of NewGrass Revival this would be the one. |

Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: Mbo Date: 22 Jun 00 - 10:05 PM Well, since it's raining cats & dogs and thund'rin' and lighnin'in' here, I put on my favorite Led Zeppelin song of all time, "The Rain Song"--the definative live version from The Song Remains The Same. Then it was on to George Harrison's All Things Must Pass. --Mbo |

Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: Helen Date: 23 Jun 00 - 01:55 AM Over the last few days I've been thrashing my Poozies CD, called Infinite Blue. I've also been playing my two Sileas albums because Mary McMaster & Patsy Seddon who are Sileas, are half of the Poozies. I got the Poozies CD in exchange for sending some music stuff to Canada to a cyber-friend from the e-mail harplist. We worked out that sending an item like a CD or book works much better than paying bank fees on overseas bank cheques. I wanted this album anyway so he ordered it and posted it to me. If I didn't know that he was really hanging out for the stuff I sent him I'd think I got far and away the best part of the bargain because this album just keeps growing and growing on me. The other two CD's I have been listening to lately are both by Leftfield - a British techno duo who are avid percussionists and the stuff they create is amazing. I could listen to these two albums (Leftism, and Afrika Shox) for the rest of my life and still keep hearing new things every time. Helen |

Subject: RE: What are you listening to? From: Mooh Date: 23 Jun 00 - 07:03 AM For a while last night I listened to the local pipe band rehearse a block or so away, and the neighbour's stereo playing the new AC/DC cd with him singing along. Simultaneously. Thankfully the dissonance was brief, but I closed the door and retired with a guitar anyway. Didn't play it, just held it as I fell asleep, and dreamed. Peace, Mooh. |

Also alot of the early Britih "Invasion" (Beatles, Rolling Stones etc.) Later as I was in my first enlistment with the Navy, Fleetwood Mac, Olivia Newton-John and Rennaisance.
