I wanted to pass on a very warm " Congratulations " to Sandy and Caroline Paton on their fantastic concert and workshop performance at the Old Songs Festival. Their warmt, humour, harmony and gentle way only begin to describe 2 of the truest folk musicians and historians, I have ever met. The way they helped and in my mind mentored some of the younger performers was professional kindnest at it's best. ( They even complemented Rick Fielding at least 6 times ). God Bless you Sandy and Caroline !!!!!!!

Although I wasn't at Old Songs, this was my experience too at NEFFA this year, and in conversations with Caroline since. And I sure have benefited from and enjoyed their music and their work over the years. A heartfelt thanks, Sandy and Caroline.

You would never guess that Sandy had broken all of the nails on his right hand before the gig. I thought he compensated quite well. Allow me to add that these two are heros of mine of long standing. Being a member of the Folk Legacy family is one of the best things that ever happened to me. I love you both, and, my admiration knows no bounds.

Wow, this must mean that, after my 40 years of knowing and listening to Sandy and Carline, they have really improved a ton. For their sakes, I'm glad to hear it. But I'll believe it when I hear it.

(The above observations are supposed to be funny. Please know that there's none better than Sandy and Caoline, and it's been my distinct pleasure (and an honor) to be a part of the FOLK LEGACY doings.)

Let me add my name to the list of Paton fans. I couldn't believe how those two kept on going- the Friday night gig lasted until nearly 3 am, then they were up and ready to perform at 10 the next morning. Four gigs that day, three on Sunday- they put me to shame with their energy! Bless you both, Sandy and Caroline. You know how much I owe you! Love, Allison

Let me kvetch--on Friday night, the Patons closed up shop and went off to their motel really early--shortly after 2 a.m., all because they had to get up at 10 a.m. the next morning and perform all day while manning the Folk Legacy booth in between workshops. Where is their boundless youthful energy? Just because Sandy is a septagenarian, he expects us to swallow the "I'm getting old and need my sleep..." line? Those two are too much a treasure trove of fine songs that need to be shared to be allowed to sleep at a festival.

In all seriousness, a job well done, Sandy and Caroline! Great singing, fine song-circle leading, and wonderful hosting of all the Mudcatters, introducing us all to one another. Thanks for everything!

Add my voice to the chorus. Sandy and Caroline's music and personal warmth changed my life forever when I met them in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the impressionable age of 17 (nearly 30 years ago). Then, as now, they took the time to meet and talk with people, and to introduce newcomers to more-seasoned folk. Their inclusiveness, as much as their wonderful music, has left its mark far and wide. As for me, the Patons introduced me to a magical world of music and friends beyond the narrow and judgemental confines of Dutch Calvinism with which I'd grown up -- music and friends, including the Patons, that still nurture me today. Bless you, you two. I love you dearly, and am forever grateful. Kathy

Yeah, and if it weren't for these two wonderful people I might never have found someone who would join me in a cholesterol bullet that chicken fried steak, grits, gravy, corn, biscuits...........and dessert. I love you both a great deal, and you know it. Let's find a Cracker Barrel somewhere and do it soon.

And by the way, folks, is this a surprise to anyone??? Aside from being two of the sweetest people ever to draw air, they are legendary in there devotion to our craft. True Bards of this era. I honored to know them, and I thank God that they are in my life as friends. Truly.

Before Spaw and Mick and the others start talkin', I'd better clarify that last post from "Grandpa"! Sandy is (or was)a Justice of the Peace in Connecticut. In 1979 (May 28th, to be exact), he performed a civil marriage ceremony in Hamden, CT, whereby Kathy Westra and Joe Hickerson were hitched (to use a technical term). Songs were sung. Cake was et. A good time was had by all. And though the marriage didn't last, the friendship with Joe did. Nothing to apologize for Sandy! I have to join in on this. I first met the Paton's in1976 on my first trip to the USA. They were friendly from the outset, and complimentary about a song I sang that was close to one of theirs. It was a happy meeting,and has been ever after. They stand out as examples of people with the attitude towards the music, and the scene, that brought me into to it in the first place. I admire their commitment to traditional music, the straightforward honesty of their performance, and their superb attitude towards younger singers, always encouraging and helpful. Their musical taste is shown in the excellence of the Folk-Legacy catalogue. Let me further acknowledge the debt that I owe them for the way Folk-Legacy music and an on-going email correspondence have helped me through some years of depression, disappointment, and disillusion. They are great folks, great folkies, and great in the art of what Pete Seeger calls 'helping people keep on keeping on'. I won't hide behind my nickname in sending this posting. These words of love come from the heart of Roy Harris.

Oh, WOW! That's wonderful to read, Roy. I learned about you, here at the Mudcat, when someone asked about you and I thought they might've been talking about the American classical composer by the same name. It is a pleasure to *see* you here.

Sandy & Caroline might be catalysts, but they are also like the gift that keeps on giving in an ever-widening circle...like their "Golden Ring." Just wonderful!
