Funny you should mention that, Rusty. I have the book out just now, working with Alan of Australia on posting the contents. I've got the index in the scanner right now. Eventually, I'll turn it into an index for the songs Alan is posting.

I've seen no mention here of the LP phono record made from the book, 'A Selection from The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs', Folk Lyric FL 121. The front of the record jacket is an imitation of the cover of book, but only the first of the three engravings on the left is (nearly) the same. On the recording A. L. Lloyd sang from the book:

Hi, Rusty - there are MIDI tunes for all of the songs, copied from the printed tunes in the songbook. Just follow the links. If you'd like to print out the music, use a MIDI editor program - I'd suggest Noteworthy Composer, which you can download here (click).

OK, so the index is done and all the links should work. Alan did a great job of posting the lyrics, but that's only one part of preparing lyrics for the database. I'd like to ask for help from anybody who'd like to spare us some time. Pick a song from the list and study it. In the same thread where the song appears, post all the research information you've been able to come up with. Look at the Digital Tradition Keywords and list all the Keywords that apply. Check the database, and list all the related songs that are in the database (and post links to them, if you can). If a song has Child, Laws, or DT numbers, list those. If a song has a tune already in the database, compare the two and let us know if they're the same. Check other songs in the database for ideas on what other information we're looking for.
If you have background information on any of these songs, please post it. That will make it easier, once Harvest time comes and we need to gather the songs for the database. I've got a lot of the harvesting on Alan's songs done already, but a little help wouldn't hurt. You'll note that Alan and Bruce Olson and some others have already started work on annotation.

The background notes from the Penguin Book (1959) are still in copyright, but I'll happily make a start on transcribing them if nobody feels it would be a problem.  Otherwise I daresay a digest would do the job?

When this thread came up last I went looking by bookfinder.com to purchase a copy. My first attempt failed because the seller had just sold the copy. The same book seller just emailed me this evening saying he now has a copy. I found one of these rare books elsewhere. So for whoever would like one here is where it is. My guess is it will not last long.
