Subject: Wanted: A new host for hearme
From: Jon Freeman
Date: 04 Jul 00 - 11:52 PM

I am sorry that this has come so close to a row in another thread but I have decided that the time has com for me to pack in hosting the Mudcat Hearme.

I sort of took over from an original room set up by Max on Mudcat's site on 10th Feb this year and the reason for me doing that was because the Mudcat version had a 2 minute cut off and I offered a solution which did not have this problem as a temporary solution.

We have not moved on much in time but the Hearme gatherings have certainly moved on in within those few months. At first, it was a once a week do largely with themes and now it has grown into something where a handful of people participating nearly every night of the week and I am pleased that I was able to help in some way towards this but I feel that the time has now come to hand over to someone else.

My feeling regarding the Hearme circle was always that it should have been under Mudcat control in case of problems concerning policy and the latest round of rows at least in my mind confirms that. Having said that, it is not my descision as to where it should go. All I'm asking is for somebody to come forward and agree to provide a new and hopefully more permanent home.

I will keep my page open until such time as there is agreement over who wishes to take it on and the page is set up.

Jon

Dear Jon,

If you feel you must give up having the HearMe link on your page, I would be honored to place it on my own. If that arrangement would be satisfactory with you, please let me know.

Although I'm sure that Max wouldn't mind at all hosting the HearMe sessions, having the link on an independent server has been helpful in the past on the rare instances when the Mudcat has gone down.

Aine,... thanks for the offer... I reckon having it separate from Mudcat is a good idea.. in case Mudcat crashes... although it could be on both.. and people just post the appropriate link to whichever on they are in....

and Jon.. thanks again for doing a great job

Guest, please do not attempt to turn this into an anti-Harpgirl thread.

It is true that that thread did make me think again about continuing to host the session but I had only intended to host it as a temporary measure and I had intended moving anyway.

For the record, if anything, I found the general lack of support (with a few exceptions) or willingness even voice an opinion (even if different to mine) on the issue that I was trying to raise which was NOT the whether women have their own event issue but how should we cater for slightly more exclusive events by those who have participated in and enjoyed the Hearme sessions that I hosted far more upsetting than any dissagreement I had with Harpgirl.

Jon...and Aine...

I'm on a helluva' lot and I don't know squat, but if you'll walk me through the set-up, I'd be happy to do it too. I have a good ISP and a healthy computer...tell me what we need and I can do it if you want.

Jon....sure wish you wouldn't give up the site...but certainly understand why you want to. Thank you, for the hours you spent trying to help me personally, solve the problems with my mike....and THANK YOU!!!.....for the hours and hours I've witnessed you spend in Hearme, over the past few months, fine tuning and improving access to the site for many of us "cyberklutzes" and helping other individual participants with their variety of computor/mike problems. Your knowledge has been invaluable for us. Through your efforts and consistent troubleshooting, we NOW have an incredible ability to easily listen/sing/play..share..wonderful live music internationally with other Catters...ANYTIME we want. It's still magic to me. Thank you!!!!

Well I am sad that Jon will not be the host anymore but I can understand if he feels it is time to pass on the job.
Thanks Aine for offering to host in the future.

I will never forget the amount of effort Jon put into making Hearme a reality. We should have a monument place for Mudcatter's tremendous contributions.
A great thing you have done Sir Jon of Whales. Maybe we could rename Hearme in dedication to Jon and call it 'Hearme Whale'
Well I guess I am one of the fortunate one who have had the opportunity to experience Jon's endless helping hand his patience and encouragment.
Thank you Jon,

Bonnie

Jon - I would also like to thank you for the time and effort you have put in on HearMe. You have patiently answered questions in the forum and in the chat portion of HearMe. I know you have worked "one on one" with a least several people. Not to mention hosting the page AND hosting "live" during sessions.

I hope that no matter where HearMe is hosted you will continue to join us in sing-arounds...

I have only been a "listener and chatter" on Hearme a few times, and was very appreciative of the opportunity to do so, not realizing the significant role Jon played in making it a reality. I read the "thread from Hell" as I like to call it and cannot find fault with Jon wanting to pass Hearme on to someone else. Jon, I find it somewhat sad that it has come to this point, and everyone is right in saying you have contributed an awesome amount to Mudcat by instituting the Hearme. I hope that those who participate in the venue take the opportunity to respect the purpose that it was set up for and use it responsibly. If you don't like it, then leave it alone.

I hope that you will continue to participate Jon, because your presence will be sorely missed.

In Humble Appreciation (and respect) Pixie

Tons of major thanks to you, Jon, for hosting HearMe for so long an tirelessly. Who else would stay up to the wee hours of the morning helping people with getting their technical problems fixed, on just dropping by to listen or sing to us, when you could be in bed taking your well-earned rest. If it were not for you and this page, I'd still by to scared to sing in public...now look at me, ye can't shut me up! Anyway, nothing endures but change, so they say, and if you feel it is time to pass on the baton, then I support you fully. I hope that you will continue to visit in HearMe when the new host picks it up, because it just wouldn't be the same at all without you. Thanks so much again, even though you are a cheap lousy maggot! **BG**

Thanks to Aine, again, and to Spaw, I will help out in anyway that I can. Pixie...got a mic? We'd love to hear you, too.*smile*

Thanks all but really we should all be thanking Aine (which I know some have done) and encouraging her in her efforts to host her new page.

From my side, I have agreed to help Aine with what ever help she needs in setting up the page before handing over and have already sent some code that I hope will solve a problem she was having using the code from my page and I reckon that between the 2 of us, we should have everything sorted and working the way Aine wants it within a couple of days.

Also thanks for your offer, spaw but Aine had already agreed to take it onboard by that point.

Jon

(looking forward to joining in sssions on the new site)

Jon,

Thank you for making Hearme possible for me. If it's time for you to move on, then I am glad you are doing what is right for you.

I am now proposing a "Ladies' Night" during which only Welshmen with sexy accents will be allowed to speak or sing or play. And a private room sounds perfect!

My introduction to Mudcat and Hearme was to have you ask if I was a wench. My immediate reaction was "Wench, indeed!" But my response was "Not a wench, a lady". I still laugh at the audacity of the question.

You are a treasure, Jon. I hope you choose to continue to share the wealth.

Thanks, too, from me, Jon.

I have only managed to time my dialling up a couple of times to coincide with HearMe's across the Atlantic and the Pacific, but when I did I enjoyed both the music and the chats. I tried to connect my mic while on-line and crashed my computer so I exited rather un-graciously on that occasion, but I have connected it again now and I think I may (hope, pray, grovel to gods and goddesses) be able to join in.

So, Jon, thanks for making it possible, being so friendly & helpful, and enduring threads from hell in the name of sharing music across the world.

Thanks also to Áine for courageously taking on the challenge.

Helen

Jon, being relatively new to Mudcat, I don't know whether the Hearme idea was yours originally, but I do know you're behind the reality of it happening for us. I, too, think it a shame that we've allowed our anger to get the best of us over the past few days, but I fully support you in your decision and thank you for the tremendous effort you've put forth in making Hearme happen. And thanks to you, Áine, for volunteering to take over the hosting. If I can be of any assistance, don't hesitate to holler.

No Ivan, the original Hearme suggestion came from JAB who put a lot of effort into getting us all organised and starting the Sunday night session and the first page was set up by Max on the Mudcat site and really, the thanks for it's usage on Mudcat is due to them. I only got involved to offer a solution to a technical problem with the Mudcat site but to do that, I had to host the thing.

Jon:

I just wanted to thank you from taking Hearme for Mudcatters from concept to reality. Way back when, before it became a regular part of Mudcat I thought it would be a cool thing, but had no idea that it would take off like it has, or go in the directions that it is going. All of making it work is your doing, from setting up the room, to creating the lockme program.

Thanks for everything.

I would also take as a sign of its success the recent back and forth bantering on how different rooms can be set up. I wish I had been on more during the dialog because I support both you and Harpgirl 100%. We want Hearme to be taken in as many different directions as it can be taken (related to music that is). All you did is post some simple guidelines to keep the rooms open, non-exclusionary, and functioning.

Maybe the new room needs a hearme version of Jam Ettiquette! (sp i know).

See, or Hear you, around soon.

JAB

P.S. Where ever the new home of Hearme resides, could we get a quick link from Mudcat to it? It would certainly make it easier for beginners to find it and enter.

Just thought I'd 'finish off' this thread and let everyone who missed the 'New HearMe Link Test' thread know that I've set up the new page and it seems to working fine. Here's the new link (remember to bookmark it - although Jon has put a link on his old page):

New Mudcat HearMe Page

And I just like to thank Jon Freeman once again (and forever) for starting the wonderful HearMe sessions here in the first place, providing hours of patient and excellent advice to us all, and especially helping me to set up the new page with some excellent code. Jon made the sessions easy, friendly and welcoming (and a lot of other fantastic things that I can't think of this early in the morning) and I know it would never have been such a great success without him. Thank you, Jon.
