I understand Bill Sables is flying home to Endland tomorrow and I just wanted to say:
Thanks, Bill, (and you, too, Allan) for your generosity and grace and humor and warmth and friendship and music and all! Go well, give our best to Lorna, and come back soon!

Yep, by the time the sun sets on his home turf on Friday, Bill will be there.

I will miss him. He has been a wonderful traveling companion. It is to his credit that he put up with me without complaint for well over 8,000 miles.

When I was first contemplating this journey someone, (in reference to our being in a car together for such a duration,) said, "Three days is a trip. Thirty days is a sentence!" My faith that it would turn out to be much better than a "sentence" was totally justified. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have shared so many hours of conversation, of music, and yes, even of silence.

We have already begun to make tentative plans for a UK Adventure. I truly hope we can make that happen. It would be great to be on the road with him again.

What an incredible experience. I am so grateful to both of you, Allan and Bill, for making it happen and being so kind about it all. It is a marvel to me that you managed to be so amiable for that long of a trip. I am not sure I could do thirty days with anyone I know!**BG**

Thanks, again, so much, and I hope the UK trip comes about for you, too. Safe journey, Bill.

Bill, so long. You and Allan's visit will be long remembered this household. Bill, you especially had a big impact on my nine year old, Katherine. Throughout your journey, she would ask, "Where are they now"? She's seen all the pictures, etc. I'll let her know you are on your way home. Thanks to you both for the gifts you have given to so many. Enough of this polite stuff. Aw, shit, I miss you guys! Take care, BlueJay

Bill, it was a pleasure. I hope our paths will cross again.

This was indeed a very special trip and adventure for all of us. Its hard to explain the joy you can get from following the travels of friends meeeting friends and seeing the sites in between. Many of us who weren't "hit" by the boys still feel a part of the experience. Allan, it was an inspired idea and the both of you brought this wonderful cyber-village even more into the reality that we tend to give it.

Bill....Have a safe trip back across the pond and come see us again soon. Your visits always bring out the best of what Mudcat really is and you are a true "Ambassador of the 'Cat." One time or another, we'll hook up!!!

Best to all the Catters at the Jug and to Lorna, who will have to give up now on all that wonderful free time she had without you!!!

It feels like I'm part of some secret society. That's neat. Have a safe flight home and come back soon.

Always keep singing,

It was absolutely FABULOUS to meet up with you fellows and sing the night away on LEJ's porch. It will always be in my memory's Hall of Fame. I have placed my Mudcat button in a place of honor by my dresser. And I seriously do hope to see you next summer when I come over to your side of the puddle.

Bill,
You and Allan have done a wonderful thing, weaving the common bond of friendship through what is now our real, tangible community - no longer just existing in cyber space. I guess it should be hats off to annap, too, who really took the first step in breaking the cardinal rule of the internet last year - never let anyone know who you really are. Well, now that we are all out in the open, isn't it a nice surprise that we are a band of perfectly nice people who respond well to the human touch. I recently read an interview with Kurt Vonnegut in which he says, "Computers are cheating people out of sociability and also out of relations with other people - out of some thing as exciting as food or sex (and making music - my addition). People are getting cheated out of a whole lot of human experience and becoming uninteresting to themselves." I have written him to tell him of your adventure and to invite him to the Mudcat - truly the exception to his rule.

So, thanks again to you and Allan for having the conviction to go through with your plan. It takes exceptional people to bring such a dream to reality. You guys are great. Thanks.

dw, I heard on NPR a week or two ago that Vonnegut is in Northampton, MA, after going there to convalesce when his apt. in NYC had a fire. I didn't know when we lived there that his daughter and her fmaily live there. Anyway, they went on to say he will be teaching at Smith College this coming fall, so who knows...IMO, it would behoove him to take you up on the suggestion and teach them something new about cyberdom! Thanks!

Best to you and yours, Bill, did Lorna get a new closet finished for all those cowboy boots you are taking home?**BG**

Subject: See the silver wing on high...
From: Allan C.
Date: 07 Jul 00 - 08:22 AM

Last night at about 9 (EDT) I said my goodbyes to Bill as I left him at Dulles airport (just outside of Washington, D.C.) When last seen he was lighting up one final cigarette to enjoy before entering the perpetual no-smoke zone which he would have to endure from the moment he entered the terminal until he made his brief stop-over in Paris some nine hours later (counting the time spent checking in, etc. at Dulles).

On the way to the airport we talked about the trip. Nobody can imagine how amazed we are that we were actually able to do it. Nor can anyone imagine how surprised we are at how profoundly we have been affected by our meetings with fellow Mudcatters. But perhaps you can imagine how wonderful it feels to have looked at the threads in the forum a few days ago and to have seen that there were as many as FIVE "gatherings" threads posted! (I whole-heartedly agree with dwditty that it was Annap who broke through the barriers and showed us all that such a thing could be done - bless her generous, loving heart!) I don't know if our trip had anything to do with the instigation of any of these gatherings (I know at least one was already in the works before we started); but whether or not it did in some small way, we are certainly happy to see so many 'Catters getting together.

I am sure Bill's email and Personal Message listings are as filled as mine with wonderful notes from folks we have met. I am just starting to get a grasp of how much these people have inspired me to explore new songs and perhaps even new instruments. I know that Bill feels the same way and will feel even more so when he checks his messages.

What a great trip it has been!! I thank each of you from the depth of my soul. I thank Bill from the bottom of my heart.

Allan

And Allan & Bill.......Well, we thank you too. It was another step, and a giant one at that, in the continuing development of this not-so-cyber village. Looking back a few years, there have been events which have happened, like annap's first gathering, which have allowed this place to grow in a way far differently than other sites. The two of you have made a giant contribution to the 'Cat.

The radio show two weeks ago made a profound effect on many, including Max. I really believe that he was finally and truly "hit" with the significance and the greatness of his creation. All the folks you visited and those of us who followed closely (an awful of us!!!) were bonded in new ways.

Thanks for an enjoyable time and I hope David has had a chance to both read and hear from the horse's mouth all about it. Besides Meebo BTW, notice that alison will be in Ireland shortly with a brief stopover on the west coast here. Really gettin' global!!!

'Spaw, I second that emotion. Allan, whether gatherings had already been planned or not, your trip has advanced this experience called Mudcat in ways that I am sure we are yet to realize. As Bill said to me in CT, "The Mudcat is the greatest thing in the world." That is shaping up to be an understatement.

Thanks again for getting off your duffs (and getting us off ours) to make the Mudcat a physical and spiritual, as well as a virtual, community.

Well, here I am back home sitting at my own computer slightly jet lagged. The trip home was uneventfull except for the sometimes heated discussions with Air France officials on both sides of the Atlantic. In DC they decided that my banjo was too large to go as cabin lugggage and suggested I check it in. I, of course refused giving examples of other airlines who allowed me to cary it in their overhead bins. Eventually they relented. The transatlantic flight was, as usual, pleasant and long and boring but it only took six and a half hours before touchdown in Paris France. Now as most of you who have met me will know, my love of all things French leaves a lot to be desired, even more so now. I was expecting a four hour stop over in Paris before my connecting flight back to England, well this was extended to eight hours due to delays because of a little light rain. But after a series of debates with Air France and Airport personell, which was mostly one sided as I could not understand most of what they were saying, (probably just as well;) I finally managed to give them a wealth of usefull information as to how to run; 1, their airline, 2, their telephone system and 3, their country. After one or two reminders of the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo, and Lord Nelson at Trafalgar I think they probably understood that I was not happy with their service. In the end I was forced to give them information as to where to stick; 1, their airline, 2, their telephone system and 3, their country, and left feeling cheerful and glorious as Wellington must have felt and flew off to Old England landing in sunshine for a change, where my son Andrew was waiting to meet me. I want to thank all you catters in the US for making my stay such a pleasant one especally Allan who was a great host and looked after me so well. I hope to repeat his hospitality next year when he comes across for the UK version of the Great Mudcat Adventure or as we like to call it the Sables and Clark Expedition. I will try to send you all personal messages after the jet lag gets better. Cheers Bill

Dear Bill & Allan, as well as the rest of you...

My heart is still so full
Of love and amazement
Gratitude, joy, contentment.
The dimensions boundless in air
And, now the physical experienced.
Two souls set out to make music
Brought love, closeness,
Unspoken and spoken commitments of friendship
Gathering us all, near and far
Still part of the whole and sum of all
Heartglow medicine is felt and I give thanks, dear friends.
