Subject: Calypso by Eliza Carthy Trio From: GUEST,simon.gardner@virgin.net Date: 05 Jul 00 - 04:43 PM I have recently enjoyed two concerts by the Eliza Carthy Trio (with Martin Green and Saul Rose) whom I thoroughly recommend. They play a wonderful calypso with a refrain approximating to "Good Day, Mr Walker; I've come to marry your daughter". Can anyone tell me the origin of this song? Eliza mentioned the name of a (Carribean?) band that is touring the UK this summer, but I didn't catch it. If anyone knows of any recordings too, I would be very grateful. Thanks. Does he have a band? (I'd appreciate any info, thanks Ed!) Simon |
Subject: RE: Help: Calypso by Eliza Carthy Trio From: GUEST,simon.gardner@virgin.net Date: 05 Jul 00 - 05:36 PM Sorry if it's bad form to answer my own quesry, but it might save someone some effort: I have since found that "The Mighty Sparrow" was born "Slinger Francisco", and as Eliza C noted, with a brilliant name like that why bother changing it!? Also found that "Mr Walker" is recorded on his 1993 album "Sparrow's Dance Party". I'm still fascinated to find out who it is touring in the UK this summer though. Simon |
