Subject: Lyr Req: Time in the Son From: *Laura* Date: 11 Aug 04 - 01:36 PM hi - does anyone know the lyrics to Eliza Carthy's 'Time in the Son'? I have looked all over but can't find them - and I'd really like to read them though. I don't know why but sometimes if I like a song I can understand it better by reading it through - anyone know what I mean?? Anyway - if you could help it would be very...... helpful. thanks laura xx |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: GUEST Date: 13 Aug 04 - 04:38 AM Tell me if I'm missing something, but when these lyric requests come up, why don't people just listen to the song and write down what the words are? Does it take less time to go on mudcat and wait for a reply than it does sit through a song all of three minutes long which you profess to like (otherwise you wouldn't want the words...). I really don't understand |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: treewind Date: 13 Aug 04 - 05:38 AM Sometimes they aren't distinct enough (no implied criticism of Eliza's singing of course) and it's reassuring to be able to check before performing the wrong version. (wouldn't be the first time of course...) Anyway, with a bit of luck "GUEST, ec" will turn up here sooner or later and set the record straight. Anahata |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: Turlough Date: 13 Aug 04 - 06:07 AM GUEST, congratulations with your perfect ear for lyrics! I am really jealous of you, you never seem to make any mistakes. However, most people tend to mishear one or two words occasionally, and then it's very comforting to have the actual lyrics on paper. Oh, by the way, did you ever hear "Da sang o' the Papa men" or "The muckin' o' Geordie's byre"? I'm really curious if you could get THOSE lyrics just by listening. You probably could, with a perfect ear like yours... T. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: GUEST Date: 13 Aug 04 - 11:56 AM But thats what we call the 'folk process' or oral transmission. I'm sure I could get the words to either of the songs mentioned if I were to speak the dialects they are in - and if I don't then whats the point of getting the words on a sheet of paper... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: Turlough Date: 13 Aug 04 - 12:08 PM So, you are saying is that a song that is not in your own dialect is not worth understanding? Hearing a dialect being spoken and reading a dialect are not the same thing... Very often, I can perfectly understand a song which is written in some dialect. You know, there ARE things like dictionaries (for instance a Scots dictionary). And do you really think that 'folk process' and 'oral transmission' are the same thing? They aren't, really. Agreed, folk music is very focused on passing through songs, "keeping the tradition alive" and such. But who ever said that the only proper way to do this is orally? T. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: Herma Date: 14 Aug 04 - 05:40 AM Guest....did it occur to you that we are not all native (english) speakers???? We try very hard to speak the language...but I'm still of DUTCH!! origin...Help from other people is thus greatly appreciated!!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: Herma Date: 14 Aug 04 - 05:57 AM And one other thing...there is nothing wrong to try and sing in other languages and dialects than your own, in my opinion.. We search very hard sometimes to find the meaning of words and expressions in other languages than our own...it's an interesting activity.....broadens your horizons, don't you think??? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: Wolfgang Date: 14 Aug 04 - 09:06 AM You're speaking my mind, Herma. I've learned a lot by trying to understand lyrics in a foreign language, in a simple sense, namely learning a bit more of the language, and in a broader sense, learning about other cultures, rites, thinking. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: *Laura* Date: 14 Aug 04 - 02:48 PM GUEST: I did actually say in my message, that I like to have the words down on paper to read through - it helps me understand the song or get a better feeling of it. Anyway, I did go thorugh and write them down as best I could - so hopefully I've got them right. xLx |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: GUEST Date: 11 Jan 05 - 04:58 PM If these really are the words Eliza sings, (as posted by Clej above) it baffles me totally why anybody would want to learn them ... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Time in the Son (Eliza Carthy) From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Jan 05 - 11:15 PM I found several sites that had sound samples, and here's what I think I heard: Can't I be pretty as I want? [or "thought"?] Wouldn't it be better if everyone was pretty? This parting is for everything and nothing and not me. My heart beats like tomorrow and I can't begin to wonder.... |
Subject: Lyr Req: TIME IN THE SON (Eliza Carthy) From: *Laura* Date: 13 Jan 05 - 05:08 PM This is what I copied them down as - as I heard them: About my time with the son My cordelia I won't tell you Because I'd never let us come unstuck So may your pretty boys always be curly haired And may you never see your lovers face reflected in your others There's a footprint of fire on my face Can't I be pretty as I fall? Wouldn't it be better if everyone was pretty? This parting is for everything and nothing and not me My heart beats like tomorrow and I can't begin to wonder Where we'll all be seconds away from now So lets us all be what we have to be And lets us all be simple love if we wont be lovers With a cool cool breeze on my face And our whole selves turn to tomorrow Wouldn't it be better if we three stood up to be counted? This parting is for nothing and nothing and nobody Bout my time in the son my cordelia I won't tell you Because I'll never let us come unstuck So may your pretty boys always be curly haired And may you never see your lovers face reflected in your others but obviously i may have misheard some bits. xLx |
