Subject: Tony Rice album From: GUEST,Paul S Date: 09 Jul 00 - 02:38 PM Hey kids.
I'm looking for a new Tony Rice album. I have Rice, Rice, Hillman & Pedersen, and love it, especially the mandolin parts.
Any recommendations? |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: GUEST,Wesley S at Home Date: 09 Jul 00 - 03:13 PM Try "Scaggs and Rice" a album with Ricky Scaggs. Fine guitar and mandolin duets. It's one of my favorites along with "Tony Rice plays and sings bluegrass" a full band recording. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: Dee45 Date: 09 Jul 00 - 03:18 PM There is also a nice Jerry Douglas album called "Everything's Going To Work Out Fine" that features some very fine Tony Rice playing on it. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: GUEST,guitarist Date: 09 Jul 00 - 05:55 PM yeah, Skaggs And Rice is a great one -- another favorite of mine is "Sings And Plays Bluegrass".

Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: GUEST,Claymaker Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:17 PM There are NO BAD TONY RICE CDS! But Among my favorites are Church St. Blues and Rice Sings Lightfoot. If you particularly like mando, look for cds that have Rice recording with Jimmy Gadreau. John |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: Stewie Date: 09 Jul 00 - 06:41 PM I presume you refer to the 1999 self-titled 'Rice, Rice, Hillman & Petersen' Rou 0450. If so, there is an earlier (1997) album by the same line-up called 'Out of the Woodwork' Rounder CD O390. It too is fine. Like others above, I commend the Skaggs and Rice album, now on CD. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: rangeroger Date: 09 Jul 00 - 07:12 PM There is also the CD "Blake and Rice" with Norman Blake. rr |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: Midchuck Date: 09 Jul 00 - 07:20 PM The second Blake and Rice album, however, has Doc sitting in on some cuts. The Trinity, all playing together...perfection. Peter. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: rangeroger Date: 09 Jul 00 - 08:02 PM Second "Blake and Rice"? With Doc Watson? Damn, I'm headed for town now. Sure hope I can find a CD store open. rr |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: GUEST,Fiddler Terry Date: 09 Jul 00 - 11:43 PM If mandolin is what you're looking for, try "Tone Poems" with David Grisman. Every track is superb. And you get to look at pretty pictures of vintage instruments, too. Terry

Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: JedMarum Date: 10 Jul 00 - 09:14 AM Yes "Norman Blake and Tony Rice2" I believe is the title, and it is a superb collection! Doc Watson does sit in and the pickin' is flawless! This is a great collection of song, including a couple of Norman Blakes eerie, folkie tunes/stories, and a few old favorites from trad and contemporary songs. This is one of the best records I've ever heard. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: GUEST,Uncle Dennis Date: 10 Jul 00 - 11:36 AM I just received the Acoustic Disc's (that's Dave Grisman's in-house label) most recent release "The Pizza Tapes." Rice, with Grisman and Jerry Garcia -- very tasty stuff, especially Jerry singing "Amazing Grace". That's my recommendation... |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: Barbara Shaw Date: 10 Jul 00 - 12:19 PM Tony Rice was in several albums by the ad hoc "Bluegrass Album Band" with Doyle Lawson, Mark Schatz, J.D. Crowe, Jerry Douglas, Doyle Lawson and sometimes others. He did most of the lead singing, with Doyle Lawson doing high harmony, and his guitar work is of course incredible. A good one is "Sweet Sunny South" on the Rounder label, and there are about 5 others, I think. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: gillymor Date: 10 Jul 00 - 06:15 PM Two of my all time favorite recordings (by anybody) are his Native American and Me and My Guitar. I'm convinced he invented something different here with his very sensitive arrangements of contemporary songwriter's tunes that pay particular attention to dynamics and tempo changes a la a small jazz combo. Also a good smattering of mando from Grisman, Bush and Gaudreau along with the usual cast of other great (and sympathetic) musicians. Frankie |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: Stewie Date: 11 Jul 00 - 03:33 AM The Rounder records group 2000 catalogue has a listing of about 20 CDs with Rice solo and in various duets and aggregations - and a couple of videos. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Tony Rice album From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 12 Jul 00 - 03:17 AM Manzanita, with Mark O'Connor |
