Subject: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 08 Aug 00 - 04:12 PM Would it be possible to create time limited threads? So that people can discuss non-music things and kind of chat without it all being caught in Amber for alltime? I know there are personal messages but I like the open forum style Is it possible? - to make special BS threads that are not permanent Roger |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: MMario Date: 08 Aug 00 - 04:15 PM the trouble with that roger is that what happens to those bs threads that slide into serious music discussion. or that have lyrics or tunes posted to them? |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 08 Aug 00 - 04:29 PM I am just interested in the principle Its either that or limit the amount of rubbish I commit to permanent storage here. How about 'Don't post Lyrics/Tunes here' and 'Move to another thread for musical discussions' warnings above the reply window? anyway this is kind of self defeating as I have just taken up more space talking about not taking up space.........GOODNIGHT Roger |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: CarolC Date: 08 Aug 00 - 07:23 PM I don't know about you, Roger, but for me, humor is as important as music. I know this is a web site about music, but I think that some of the humor found here is worth keeping around. Carol |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: Mrrzy Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:13 PM Besides, the only ones that ARE permanent are the FAQ and, sometimes, What's On. Anything else drops off if nobody posts to it. I have seen people posting silly things like I Wish This Thread Would Die, but I would recommend against having threads that dropped off after X time rather than after nobody posts to it any more. Although I would think about Threads That Cannot Be Revived (once off, it doesn't come back even with filters) but who would orchestrate that? Wouldn't be Max, that's for sure! |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:33 PM One of the best things that Mudcat has is the ability to go back and rejuvenate old threads. Many thread topics are better if you bring the old thread back instead of starting a new one. I like reading the old posts in relation to a question, even if the new question is a different slant. Just an opinion. As for total nonsense such as the Killing a Thread thing, I think the people who posted there would be happy to kill off 75% of it. If everyone agrees, it can be done, but the call goes then to Max/Joe/Pene. The "timed" thread idea is OK, but I think it just creates some excess work as threads tend to drift around. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: campfire Date: 08 Aug 00 - 11:41 PM The only thing I worry about is the space all the "BS" threads take up. People are already complaining about the "slowness" of loading, etc, and searches often "time out" before you can even find what you were looking for. I don't know what the total space capability is, but I'd sure hate to run out of room around here....but I don't have a good solution, either. campfire |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 09 Aug 00 - 03:41 PM The other week Spaw someone (guest?) dragged back an old thread that I wished I hadn't seen. It seemed to rake over the coals and burn someone again. They had chosen to share something at that time and maybe hadn't realised it would be revived now and then for no apparent purpose? roger |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: Wolfgang Date: 14 Aug 00 - 05:31 AM I think Roger's idea is very good but I'd prefer this option on the basis of posts. That is we'd have to decide with each post whether we want it to be permanent or to fade away after, e.g., 2 weeks. So, if there'd be a lyrics request for 'My Willie sails over the ocean', Catspaw's post telling us what his personal association is when he reads 'Willie', my post telling that I might have the song at home but can't tell now and several others would fade away, while Stewie's post with the lyrics would stay. With Mudcatters posting up to 65 posts a day that'd be a possibility to keep it functional for some more years. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: Non Stick Threads - NonPermaThreads From: The Shambles Date: 14 Aug 00 - 06:10 AM Is sofware needed to do that? If we consider our contribution to have little lasting value, it's probably better not to post it publicly in the first place. |
