Subject: RE: Lyr Req: My Ole Flame From: Giac Date: 08 Aug 00 - 08:15 PM Hi, Phil --
When you say novelty song, do you mean the version done by Spike Jones, which featured a "Peter Lorre" voiced pyromaniac?
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that was a parody of an older "love" song.
I had the first version on a Spike Jones recording, but it's long gone. However, there is at least one CD, maybe more, of his, um, renderings (using that in the correct sense of the word). He was a skilled singer and musician and the lyrics are easy to understand. Good luck, Giac |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: My Ole Flame From: GUEST,Phil Date: 08 Aug 00 - 09:31 PM The song I'm referring to is about an old tobacco chewing guy who's girlfriend won't cooperate as long as he is chewing. And, in the end, he has to choose. Thanks! |

Subject: Lyr Add: MY OLD FLAME From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Oct 02 - 01:06 AM This is probably the original, of which the others mentioned above are parodies: Copied from http://www.ladyday.net/song/song171.html MY OLD FLAME (Arthur Johnson / Sam Coslow) My old flame I can't even think of his name But it's funny now and then How my thoughts go flashing back again To my old flame My old flame My new lovers all seem so tame For I haven't met a gent So innocent or elegant As my old flame I've met so many men With fascinating ways A fascinating gaze in their eyes Some who sent me up to the skies But their attempts at love Were only imitations of My old flame I can't even think of his name But I'll never be the same Until I discover what became Of my old flame [AMG/All Music Guide lists 358 recordings of this song. Billie Holiday's was an early one, if not the first.] |
