I am have been a fan of Bud and Travis ever since I first heard their 1st album. I had lived in Mexico some years, now several years ago, and with all of today's tech ability, I have re-connected with the B & T music. I could get the rough meaning, but the verb "tenter" I did not understand and the translation did not make sense. The music is still great!

Below is what it means. Now if you want to put that in proper English...

THE RED HEIFER 1

Open the herd pen door, cowboy,
For we have to catch the red heifer (with a lasso)

Oy oy oy,oy
We're going to catch with a lasso the red one that we must try (to see how wild she is)

They say that the red one has pointed/sharp (1) horns and they say that the cowboys and the keepers are afraid of her.

Oy oy oy,oy
We're going to catch with a lasso the red one that we must try

(1) it means that they didn't unhorn her or at least cut the sharp top of the horn.

THE RED HEIFER 2

Open the herd pen door, cowboy,
For we have to catch the red heifer (with a lasso)

Oh, oh, oh, oh,
We're going to catch with a lasso the red one that we must try (to see how wild she is)

They say that the red one has pointed/sharp horns and they say that the cowboys and the cocks/keepers are afraid of her.

oh, oh, oh, oh
We're going to catch (with a lasso) the red one that we must try

This brown heifer comes from good pens/herds,
The keepers bring her from the Tampico area

This goad (meaning "bring this goad"), picador / you must make the fat-at-her-nape bleed. Let them shut the young calves up in the bullpens.

"Uy" can also be translated as "ow" or any word that conveys a shade of "beware!" "it's going to hurt/be dangerous"

FWIW, Lorenzo Barcelata was the same chappie who wrote "Maria Elena" (1925; the English words came later).

Clips of VC on YouTube.

Vaquilla is a young cow, a heifer.
Vaquilla trigueña is a brown heifer.
Vaquilla colorada is a colored heifer, usually red or ruddy.
Becerrillos are tanned calf-skins (a Californio term).

Thar ain't no bull here!

Subject: Lyr Add: VAQUILLA COLORADA
From: Jim Dixon

I found these lyrics at a Bud and Travis web site:

LA VAQUILLA COLORADA

Abre las puertas, vaquero!
del corral de la manada
que tenemos que lazar
la vaquilla colorada

(Repeat first stanza)

Oy, oy, oy, oy
Vamos a lazar!
A la colorada que tenemos que tentar

(Repeat stanza four times)

Dicen que la colorada
tiene los cuernos puntales
y dicen que tienen miedo
vaqueros y caporales!

Oy, oy, oy, oy
vamos a lazar
a la colorada que tenemos que tentar

(Repeat first verse twice, then second verse four times, then end.)

The above lyrics come with an English translation, but I don't trust it. They translate "La Vaquilla Colorada" as "The Red Bull." I don't know much Spanish, but I know enough to recognize a feminine noun when I see one!

* * *
I found this version at a Spanish-language site called Prontuario de la canción mexicana (Handbook of Mexican Song):

LA VAQUILLA COLORADA
Lorenzo Barcelata

Abre las trancas, vaquero,
del corral de la manada,
que tenemos que lazar
la vaquilla colorada.

Dicen que la colorada
tiene los cuernos puntales;
dicen que le tienen miedo
vaqueros y caporales.

Uy, uy, uy, uy, uy,
vamos a lazar
a la colorada
que tenemos que tentar.

Esa vaquilla trigueña
viene de buenos corrales;
de la tierra tampiqueña
la traen los caporales.

Esa puya, picadores,
hay que sangrar el morrillo;
que encierren en los toriles
a todos los becerrillos.

( Estribillo. )

Thanks Roy, I do have the recroding, but my Spanish and my mind are too slow to transcribe it. I appreciate the offer -- but I need the printed word. I still have faith that it will be forth coming.

Allan

I don't have the lyrics written down, but I do have an album by B&T that has the cut. If all else fails,& you don't have a copy already, I'd be happy to tape off the song & send that to you for figuring out the words yourself. Just drop me an email at rkline@azstarnet.com. PS. there's a B&T website?

This ia a song in Spanish by Bud and Travis. It is about a lusty boy, his lusty dog, and some lusty cows. Down in lusty Mexico. It is not on the B&T web site nor in the DT. You've never let me down yet.

Thanks,

Allan
