can someone give me an up to date link to hearme? I'm still trying to download that turkey, even after two experts have given up.

I hear you, and I'm in the same boat, but I can't help you.

Kendall, the link is http://www.geocities.com/anneuicocaire/hearme.html

Lox, did you try using the second method I suggested you tried in the other thread - downloading a .zip file and extracting the files it contains to Netscape's plugin directory?

Jon

http://www.hearme.com/products/voicecreator/tryitnow.html

That's the IE version. From Netscape, I couldn't even see the download link on the Hearme website. I did install it in Netscape via the Lox.zip file, Netscape listed it as an installed plug-in, but it just didn't work (using 4.7).

This is pretty much business as usual, the Hearme site is probably using proprietary MS html extensions that don't work under Netscape (what, you thought HTML was an open standard?). As much as I loathe MS, Netscape has pulled the same kind of crap in the past. There really just aren't any good guys in the browser wars.

It works fine under IE 5.

hope this helps

Yeah, it works fine with Internet Explorer 5, but right now it appears to be down at Aine's server's site. I have tried several times to get into her room and it keeps saying it is unavailable.

FYI: HearMe does not work on a Mac.

I will send Aine a note and see if she can see what is wrong with her server of Yahoo's hosting function.

Oh, well, it seems fickle, this time I got in on the first try; last time I tried it at least 6-7 times and got nowhere.

Luther, Hearme use the same JavaScript file (vc.js) which is located at thier web site and this is the code that all versions of Voice creator (Aines site, the link you gave, etc. point to).

Hearme check the browser type, checking for Netscape useing the following code: if( navigator.appName == "Netscape" )....

If you are using Netscape, the Embed tag is used for the plugin and if you are using IE, the Object tag is used. As you said, one can question HTML being standard but Hearme do in fact cater for this one.

I am afraid that I agree with your thoughts re MS and Netscape and IMO, IE is the superior browser.

Jon, I should've noticed the links were the same for Netscape and IE, didn't occur to me. Yeah, I think IE may be the better browser now, but I like the newsreader in Netscape better (or maybe I'm just used to it).

Lox, I think maybe the easiest solution for you is just to install IE 5, the minimum installation is only around 2.2M, and you can keep Netscape as your normal browser. IE will install itself as the default browser, but all you have to do is run Navigator after the IE installation and it will prompt you to set the default back to Netscape. Then you can just use IE for Hearme. It's handy to have them both installed, some things will work on one but not the other.

Hey Guys!

It would appear that Yahoo/Geocities is experiencing some SFEs at this time (Server Flatulence Episodes) . . . here's the message I got when I checked out the problem on my site: "Various Geocities homesteads maybe unavailable presently. The engineers are aware of the situation and are currently working on a resolution. Thank you for your patience." I had this problem on another one of my websites the other day, but it was back the next evening. Sorry about the inconvenience, but I'm sure they'll have everything back up and running real soon.

Hearme works well for me about 3/4 of the time; but on some nights it freezes up my machine entirely, and requires a cold reset. And I'm damned if I'm doing anything different on the nights it goes bad!

Peter.

Midchuck, the only freeze ups that I am aware of with Hearme have appeared to stem from having Real Player open. Are you sure that you have not got that or perhaps any other audio program open on the nights when the freez ups occur?

Jon
