Subject: sessions in York From: GUEST,KC Date: 05 Sep 00 - 08:08 PM Does anybody know of any sessions taking place in York from October onwards? I'm going to uni there and fear I may get withdrawal symptoms without a regular dose of live music... |
Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: BanjoRay Date: 05 Sep 00 - 08:36 PM There's an excellent session every sunday night from about 8:30 at the Golden Ball, a pub on a street parallel with and to the right of Micklegate (looking in to the town centre) whose name I can't remember. There's usually about 7 or 8 musicians (fiddles, squeezebox, bass, guitar, sometimes a banjo (often played by me)). The music is often American Old Time, maybe some old english fiddle tunes, various other stuff depending on who's in - not usually Irish because this gets hammered to death in other places. There's another more folky session at a pub called the Maltings on, I think, a tuesday but I've never been, although I believe its good. The beer is excellent in both places. Cheers Ray |

Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: Skipjack K8 Date: 07 Sep 00 - 04:28 AM Shame Amsterdam missed out, Malcolm! Just think, we'd all be smoking Peter Stuyvesant instead of Marlboro! Skipjack |
Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: Skipjack K8 Date: 07 Sep 00 - 04:40 AM Actually, KC, there is an excellent session at the Sloop in Barton on Humber on a Tuesday night, which is only about an hour from York in a fast car. Skipjack |

Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: Cobble Date: 07 Sep 00 - 01:45 PM Singaround first Sunday each month at the Crown Inn, Hemingbrough, about 12 miles out of York. Hope to see you there. Mrs. Cobble. |
Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: GUEST,The bloke in the corner Date: 07 Sep 00 - 05:15 PM Further to Skipjack, we both play at the Barton session Tuesdays, and it's invariably very good, no cliques, anarchic, very good beer and excellent sandwiches. Also regular visits from various part. And it's not an hour from York, it's only 50 minutes - I know, I take my son to York University quite often! |
Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: GUEST,Ickle Dorritt cookieless again Date: 08 Sep 00 - 02:59 PM Ignore the others! where you really want to be is at Nellies on the first sunday afternoon of every month. Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: Eric the Viking Date: 08 Sep 00 - 04:00 PM Well, you can take your pick from all these sessions-I plump for the Jug- a warm friendly bunch and not far from York. You could do one a day almost! But I expect you'll be holding up the bars in the Uni very soon. It's a great Uni with some excellent bars-well it used to be in the 70's-before you were born. Cheers. Eric |
Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: Mrs.Duck Date: 08 Sep 00 - 06:41 PM I'll second the Jug. Wednesday night strayght down the A19 at Chapel Haddlesey. |

Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: roopoo Date: 10 Sep 00 - 03:27 AM I haven't been to the Tuesday session at the Maltings, but I know a man who does... If the stuff he plays on his box is anything to go by, it should be a good night. When I went past it yesterday, I noticed it has a sign outside which declares it something like the national real ale pub of the year! If you need directions, it's close by Lendal Bridge, and near the junction with Rougier Street, set down a small road parallel with Lendal. Easily seen - you can't miss it. If you do go, ask for Pete Walker and tell him Andrea Robertson sent you! mouldy |
Subject: RE: Help: sessions in York From: GUEST,KC again Date: 10 Sep 00 - 05:52 PM To Skipjack, seems I have a few sessions to choose from. Somebody who has a fast car could come and sample one any time they liked, especially if York was less than an hour from where they lived... |

It runs from 2pm till 6pm on the first Sunday of every month, hosted by my good self, and anybody is welcome. We have a good mix of singers and musicians, of varying abilities, and always have a great afternoon. It's always great to see new faces. And its only 35 minutes from York Uni...! Pete |
