Does anybody know of any sessions taking place in York from October onwards? I'm going to uni there and fear I may get withdrawal symptoms without a regular dose of live music...

There's an excellent session every sunday night from about 8:30 at the Golden Ball, a pub on a street parallel with and to the right of Micklegate (looking in to the town centre) whose name I can't remember. There's usually about 7 or 8 musicians (fiddles, squeezebox, bass, guitar, sometimes a banjo (often played by me)). The music is often American Old Time, maybe some old english fiddle tunes, various other stuff depending on who's in - not usually Irish because this gets hammered to death in other places. There's another more folky session at a pub called the Maltings on, I think, a tuesday but I've never been, although I believe its good.
The beer is excellent in both places.
Cheers
Ray

When you arrive in York The Black Swan is the home of York Folk Club I am sure the organiser will be able to point you in the right direction or provide you with a listing magazine. Approx 20 miles from York at Chapel Haddelsey is the Jug a well known Mudcatters haunt on a Wednesday night Keith

Trafalgar Bay, Friday nights. Jim and I had a weekend in York not long ago, and found this session. Excellent musicians and singers. Very informal. Bron.

Yes; it's the city that New York is named after.  There are places in the world that are not in America!

Shame Amsterdam missed out, Malcolm! Just think, we'd all be smoking Peter Stuyvesant instead of Marlboro!

Actually, KC, there is an excellent session at the Sloop in Barton on Humber on a Tuesday night, which is only about an hour from York in a fast car.

Further to Skipjack, we both play at the Barton session Tuesdays, and it's invariably very good, no cliques, anarchic, very good beer and excellent sandwiches. Also regular visits from various part. And it's not an hour from York, it's only 50 minutes - I know, I take my son to York University quite often!

Ignore the others! where you really want to be is at Nellies on the first sunday afternoon of every month. Nellies is otherwise known as The White Horse in Hengate Beverley -a mere spit and a fart away from York -so come on down!

Well, you can take your pick from all these sessions-I plump for the Jug- a warm friendly bunch and not far from York. You could do one a day almost! But I expect you'll be holding up the bars in the Uni very soon. It's a great Uni with some excellent bars-well it used to be in the 70's-before you were born. Cheers. Eric

If you can get over to Hull, there's a pretty good session most Fridays at the Kingston (pub) on Cumberland Street. The session gets going around 9.00pm.

I haven't been to the Tuesday session at the Maltings, but I know a man who does... If the stuff he plays on his box is anything to go by, it should be a good night. When I went past it yesterday, I noticed it has a sign outside which declares it something like the national real ale pub of the year! If you need directions, it's close by Lendal Bridge, and near the junction with Rougier Street, set down a small road parallel with Lendal. Easily seen - you can't miss it. If you do go, ask for Pete Walker and tell him Andrea Robertson sent you!

To Skipjack, seems I have a few sessions to choose from. Somebody who has a fast car could come and sample one any time they liked, especially if York was less than an hour from where they lived...

Can i just correct Ickle Dorritt's mention of the White Horse (Nellies) session.....this has now moved to the Sun Inn, Eastgate, Beverley. It runs from 2pm till 6pm on the first Sunday of every month, hosted by my good self, and anybody is welcome. We have a good mix of singers and musicians, of varying abilities, and always have a great afternoon. It's always great to see new faces. And its only 35 minutes from York Uni...!

Pete
