Subject: Computer sound problem From: GUEST,JTT Date: 10 Sep 00 - 12:58 PM I just had the great idea of getting a zip drive for backup. It's a long story, but it's nuked my email - including vital business mail, in Eudora - and a couple of other programs; it has also got rid of the sound from my CD-ROM. How do I get it back? |

Subject: RE: Computer sound problem From: Bernard Date: 10 Sep 00 - 03:40 PM Is it an internal or external drive? If it's external, is it parallel or USB? If it's internal, have you tried AlkaSeltzer? Ooops! Wrong problem! |

Subject: RE: Computer sound problem From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Sep 00 - 04:16 PM JTT, I have noted you only say that the sound has gone so I assume that the CD is operating normally otherwise. Is this drive an internal drive? Assuming you are using a PC (I know nothing about Macs), if it is an internal drive, are you sure that you did not dislodge the cable that runs from the CD to the sound card while fitting it? Other questions:
Can you play other sounds, e.g. wav files and MIDIs? Jon

Subject: RE: Computer sound problem From: GUEST,Tekkie Date: 10 Sep 00 - 04:51 PM Guest JTT, Your first mistake was buying a zip drive. You'll be in store for this sooner than later. I would suggest that if this was recent purchase you run (not walk) back to the store where you purchased it from and get a full refund. Consider a CD burner instead. 650 megs of storage on a blank CD for under 2 dollars as opposed to 100 megs of storage for 12-15 dollars for a zip disk...and the dreaded "click of death" to have to contend with. There is a very large class action suit currently in progress against IOMEGA. Remove the zip drive from your computer. Go into Device Manager, and remove from there as well in Disk Drives. Go into Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information and restore all your driver and configuration files as they were before you installed the zip drive. If this doesn't solve the problems you're experiencing, then a complete reformatting of the hardrive, and reinstallation of Windows is the only rememdy. |

Subject: RE: Computer sound problem From: GUEST,JTT Date: 10 Sep 00 - 06:51 PM I have a CD burner. Never thought of using it for backup. Doh! Unfortunately, the store where I bought the zip drive (an external SCSI, by the way) was a currently impoverished friend. Yeah, right, "Gimme my cheque back". Sure. I found and reinstalled, as I thought, my Eudora mailboxes, but Eudora is only showing some of them. I've now got it downloading my mail, at a snail's pace. I've re-set-up my two email accounts (for maillists and business) and am trying to download mail so that I can set up filters before the flood of morning mail comes in. Why is it coming in so slowly? Perhaps it's 40 copies of the entire version of the Koran in Arabic and translation some nut was sending around the net a few months ago? I had filtered out his name, may he be the accursed of Allah's least favourite ass, but of course my filters are gone. |

Subject: RE: Computer sound problem From: GUEST,Tekkie Date: 10 Sep 00 - 07:05 PM Understood JTT. (Yes, use the burner for backups. Give the zip away or donate it to a public school, assuming it's still working all right.) As for the sound problem, sometimes things that might be obvious escape us. Check first and make sure your speakers are connected properly to your sound card. If so, then see if you are showing that little yellow speaker icon on your Windows task bar. If you are, double click on it, and it will bring up your grey Play Control box properties box, that shows Play Control, CD Audio, Line In, Wave, etc. Make sure the sliders are all the way up for CD audio and Wave/Direct Sound (and the boxes assigned to each are not checked as Muted). If you don't have this yellow speaker icon on your taskbar, you can still access the Play control box, by clicking START---SETTINGS--->CONTROL PANEL--->MULTIMEDIA and on the Multimedia page, check the box that says "show volume control on the taskbar". Then close it, find the yellow icon on your taskbar, and go through what I mentioned in the preceding paragraph. This just might solve your problem. If it doesn't you will need to reload the drivers for your sound card, and go from there. I can't give you a specific reasoon why your email is downloading so slowly without knowing how your connection to the internet is set up. Eudora while a great email program (my favorite) is a resource hog. You shouldn't have anything else running in the background while sending or receiving. Perhaps there is a problem with the POP server or with the SMPT server, or if you're connected via dial-up, perhaps line noise, or high net usage on the ISP's email server. You'll have to trouble shoot that one.

Subject: RE: Computer sound problem From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 10 Sep 00 - 08:28 PM SCSI Zips can be quite a problem; I've been fighting with mine for a while, now. I'd suggest that you remove all the software associated with it (you might keep the drivers at first) and disable "auto insert notification" for that drive, which may prevent it from trying to usurp the functions of your CD drive. You may also need to fiddle with the BIOS to stop the Zip (they are aggressive things, largely because Iomega hasn't bothered to update them to take into account the fact that other manufacturers use SCSI, too, and a more recent version) as well) from believing that, not only is it the only removable disk drive on your system, but really ought to be your hard drive as well. Try those suggestions in order (but don't touch the BIOS until you've done a lot of research), and good luck! Malcolm |
