From: Parson

This is NOT a request for lyrics. Rather it is a request, yes or no, if you have ever heard this silly song.

My Dad used to sing it to us kids as a joke, usually at breakfast, (not a good idea). I never knew if it was something he made up, or if it went farther than that. Has anyone ever heard of this song.

I know all the words to the one verse he always sang. If there is more than one verse, then yes, I would like to know them.

But you need to tell us what those words are ~~ that helps jog the memory. All I can come up with is "Molasses, molasses, it's icky sticky gooey, it always sticks to you." Doubt that I will ever come up with more than that, at least not without help.

OK, here goes, but don't say I didn't warn you!
I LIKE MOLASSES

I like molasses,
Good old country sorghams,
Eat 'em in the Summer & the Fall
When they get so full of flies,
They resemble raisin pies,
That's the way I like 'em best of all!

WELL, I'VE HEARD IT! And I still remember a verse that goes:

I went to see my sweetie; it was just the other day,
And she about had supper ready, and put it to me to stay.
She didn't have no 'taters; didn't have no beans;
Just a jug of 'lasses was all she had to eat.
'Cause she likes 'lasses, good ol' country sod.
She eats 'em in the winter and the fall.
Now when they trickle down her chin,
Shucks, I just lick 'em off again,
'Cause that's the way I likes 'em best of all!

Another verse, I just remembered goes:

Grandma's eyes are fading, and she can't hardly see.
What falls in her 'lasses, not a darn cares she.
Grandpa's teeth are missing, every single one,
And when he eats his 'lasses, he just smacks 'em with his gums.
'Cause he likes 'lasses, good ol' country sod.
He eats 'em in the morning and the fall.
Now in the winter when they freeze,
And he can get 'em out with ease,
Now that's the way he likes 'em best of all!

***I remember hearing this when I was a kid...recorded by ARTHUR SMITH and the CRACKERJACKS (Charlotte, NC). Then there was the famous story told on TV by the late SENATOR SAM ERVIN (D-NC)(also of Watergate fame)... A guest in his home asked for some molasses, at breakfast. Senator Sam, being a country boy from the western mountains of N.C., replied, "Well, you just eat your 'lasses. Then you can have some mo' 'lasses! Hope this helps you all find what you are looking for!

DANG SANDYTOES! Get away from my 'lasses! Stop! Get away! They are mine!

Well, Tar Hill, how about that. All I ever knew was that one verse or I guess it is the chorus. I wouldn't doubt that my Dad heard it from Arthur Smith. He would like that sort of thing. Thanks for filling me in. I had no idea there was any more to it.

A song called 'LASSES, recorded by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith and His Crackerjacks, appears on the current CD "Have a Little Fun," 2002. It is also sung by Reno & Smiley on "On the Air," 1996.

Sorry, I couldn't find any lyrics or a sound file.

This song was one of our favorites from the country/western radio station back in the early 1950's. Used to drive my mother nuts when we'd sing it.

Charley got there first. It was a popular radio song in the early to mid 50's. I vaguely remember a 'girl group' singing it as we drove out to State College PA in '54 to visit my cousin who was finishing his PhD out there.

I learned the following three verses of the song from a fellow in northwestern Arkansas.

Everybody has some food that they like best,
Somethin' that they're fond of, more than all the rest.
Mine is black molasses. They really are the stuff.
I eat 'em morning, noon, and night. I never get enough,
'Cause I like molasses, good ol' country sorghum.
I eat 'em in the summer and the fall.
Get 'em hot and get 'em spread On a big hunk of short'nin' bread,
That's the way I like 'em best of all!

I went to see my sweetie just the other day.
She had supper ready; wanted me to stay.
She didn't have no 'taters; didn't have no meat.
Just a big black jug of molasses was all she had to eat.
'Cause she likes molasses, good ol' country sorghum.
She eats 'em in the summer and the fall.
When they trickle down my chin, I let her lick 'em off again;
That's the way I like 'em best of all!

Grandpa's teeth are missin', ever' single one.
When he eats his molasses, he smacks 'em with his gums.
And Grandpa's eyes are failin'. He can't hardly see
Just what's in his molasses, but never a care gives he.
'Cause he likes molasses, good ol' country sorghum.
He eats 'em in the summer and the fall.
When they get so thick with flies They resemble raisin pies,
That's the way he likes 'em best of all!

This would be an easy song to put other verses on. It's great fun to sing it. The fellow I learned it from was a Native American and worked for a natural gas pipeline company. He was visiting another pipeline worker whose name was Ralph "Bones" Gentry in Jackson, Missouri. Bones was about the finest person in the world. His house was open every weekend to pickers from everywhere. I hope the above is useful.

I LIKE MOLASSES, sung by Hank Penny, appears on the album "King of Hillbilly Bebop," 2003. I got this from a sound sample:

Now both my pa and ma, they like 'lasses too,
And pa says they're the only friend that'll stick to you.
Well, when they eat their molasses, they sure are a stuck-up pair.
They get in my papa's mustache and in my mama's hair,
But they just crazy 'bout 'lasses, good ol' country sorghum.
They eat 'em in the summer and the fall.
They just set there an' they sop an' sop.
Man, I think they'd never stop.
That's the way they like 'em [best of all].

The Online 78 rpm Discograpy project lists these recordings with "Molasses" in the title:
BLACK STRAP MOLASSES, Danny Kaye et al., 1951?
BLACK STRAP MOLASSES, Tex Williams, Capitol 1700, 1940s?

From: GUEST,Bob Çoltman

I think the original request was answered with "I Like Molasses" above. But as "Molasses, Molasses (It's Icky Sticky Goo)" has been mentioned; here it is, with story attached.

The song was composed by Larry Clinton, 1950 and released in 1950 by Lenny Carson and the Whiz Kids on the Savoy subsidiary Discovery. According to the great "Music You (Possibly) Won't Hear Anyplace Else" blog at http://musicyouwont.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html, "Molasses, Molasses (It's Icky Sticky Goo)" features a sped-up group of adult singers masquerading as a children's chorus ... the adult voices somehow take on [a] slightly creepy quality. Your ears know something is wrong--the voices are too perfect, pitch-wise, and too robotic. And too sped-up-sounding. ... I wonder if we've discovered the first fake-speed children's chorus in disc history? ... This is a question that cries out to be answered."

Spike Jones & His City Slickers recorded it with additional lyrics by Eddie Maxwell, also apparently using the speed-up technique so it sounds like children singing. The Jones version can be heard at http://youtube.com/watch?v=LIFAAYqdASQ, from which the following words come.

A couple of lines aren't clear (to me at least, I'm in a noisy environment today), and I'd appreciate help in straightening them out from anyone who'll give a listen to the YouTube version.

Thanks, Bob

MOLASSES, MOLASSES (IT'S ICKY STICKY GOO)
By Larry Clinton, 1950.

1. There was a man named Fred who loved to stay in bed,
When by and by they wondered why, they found out he was dead,

CHORUS: Molasses! Molasses! That icky sticky goo!
Molasses! Molasses! It always sticks to you.

2. A man lost his (dog?) Pete, and passed him as a treat? [?on the street]
So for a while you'll see his smile on someone else's feet.

3. There was a man named Matt who tried to milk a cow,
He never knew it was a bull. It doesn't matter now.

4. A trombone man named Moore could follow any score,
But now he's done, he followed one into a revolving door.

5. I dreamed of shredded wheat, I ate and ate till dawn,
When I awoke it was no joke, my mattress was half gone.

6. A (silver?) player named Jeff was famous at the (mat?)
But with Spike Jones his (? stones), it was something that he et.

7. One night I nearly froze without my heavy clothes,
(Sneezes) I'm breathing through the nose. (sneeze) nose.

8. You ought to learn this song without a bit of fuss,
In other words, be like the birds, and sing along with us.

I finally got the video to work for me.
And now I have these lyric corrections to make:

2a. A man lost his false teeth, and hasn't found a trace.
2b. So for a while you'll see his smile on someone else's face,
3b. He never knew it was a bull. It makes no diff'rence now.
6a. A tuba player named Chet was famous at the Met. [=Metropolitan Opera?]
6b. But with Spike Jones his pear-shaped tones are from something that he et.
8a. You all have learned this song without a bit of fuss.

My dad sang this as well to me, just two verses, at breakfast of course! Ah, Dad's , you got to love em!

I like Molasses, good ole' country sogrum,
I like them in the winter and the fall.
When they drip down granpa's chin, he just licks them off again,
that's the way he likes best of all.

I like molasses, good ole' country sogrum,
I like them in the winter and the fall,
When they get so full of flies,
Grandma thinks there rasin pies,
that's the way she likes em best of all.

I always wondered where he had heard that song.
Thanks to all who contributed, and thanks for the internet!

He was born in 1916, in Pine Knott, KY. In the 60's I he would sing this at the breakfast table to get a laugh out of me.

It still works when I think of him, and that silly song. :)

Hello, We had this record back home when I was a kid, and I was very happy to find it here and the link to you tube. I think I may have a better version of the second part:

A man lost his false teeth
and has´nt found a trace,
so for a while you see his smile
on someone elses face.

Does this make sense?

I just logged on today (7-24-10) to see if there was any info on this song, which a boy named David Sadler sang a couple times to our 7th grade class in 1958 in Detroit, Mich. David moved at the end of the term, I've never heard the song since, but obviously liked it. These are the words I remember:

Most everybody likes some food the best
One thing that they're fonder of than all the rest
Mine's plain molasses, I think it's the stuff
I eat in night and morning and I never get enough
Cuz I like molasses, good ol' country sorghum
And I sops 'em in the summer and the fall
Get it hot, get it spread, on a big hunk of shortnin' bread
That's the way I like 'em best of all.

I went to see my sweetie, just the other day
She had supper ready and put at me to stay
Didn't have no taters, didn't have no meat
A jug of black molasses was all she had to eat
Cuz she likes molasses, good ol' country sorghum
And she sops 'em in the summer and the fall
When it trickles down her chin, she just licks 'em in again
That's the way she likes 'em best of all.

My mammy and my pappy like molasses too
Pap says it's the only thing that sticks to you
Pappy's eyes are failing, he can hardly see
(this line I forgot -- I made up my own line so I could sing it)
Cuz he likes molasses, good ol' country sorghum
And he sops 'em in the summer and the fall
When they get so full of flies, they resemble raisin pies
That's the way he likes 'em best of all.

This version is obviously intended as a children's song, and it includes a chorus in which children's voices are prominent. I transcribed this from a recording on Spotify.

MOLASSES, MOLASSES (IT'S ICKY STICKY GOO)
As sung by Ella Fitzgerald on "Miss Ella's Playhouse" (2008)

CHORUS: Molasses! Molasses! It's icky sticky goo!
Molasses! Molasses! It always sticks to you.

1. There was a man named Pete who dearly loved to eat,
He chewed and chewed on so much food he can't stand on his feet.

2. There was a man named Jack who stepped upon a crack
He was so thin, he fell right in and never did come back.

3. I knew a man named Kent whose nose was very bent.
He followed it too far one day. No one knows where Kent went.

4. There was a man named Fred who loved to stay in bed.
When by and by they wondered why, they found out he was dead.

MOLASSES, MOLASSES (IT'S ICKY STICKY GOO)

[Same as Ella Fitzgerald's version, but with this additional verse:]

3.5 There was a man named Max who tried to milk a cow.
He never knew it was a bull. It makes no diff'rence now.

The lyrics to the one I grew up with had three verses, and the refrain was the only thing that was sung. The verse lyrics were spoken.

We just called the song "'Lasses" (Molasses without the "Mo")

1. Now, nearly everybody's got a food that they like best;
Somethin' that they're fonder of more than all the rest.
Mine's just plain ol' 'lasses. I think they're the stuff!
I eat 'em night an' mornin', but I never get enough!

I like 'lasses!
I eat 'em in the summer and the fall.
Get 'em hot, and get 'em spread
'twixt two hunks of ol' cornbread,
Now, that's the way I like 'em most of all.

2. Grandpa's eyes are failin'. He can't hardly see.
What falls in his 'lasses not a darn care has he.
Grandpa's teeth are missin'-- every single one!
When he eats his 'lasses, he just smacks 'em with his gums.

He likes 'lasses!
He eats 'em in the summer and the fall.
When they get so full of flies
They look like raisin pies,
Well, that's the way he likes 'em most of all.

3. I went to see my sweetie, t'was just the other day.
She had supper ready. She bid me to stay.
Didn't have no taters, didn't have no meat;
A jug of 'lasses was all she had to eat!

She likes 'lasses!
She eats 'em in the summer and the fall.
When they trickle down her chin,
Shucks! I just lick 'em off again;
'Cause that's the way I like 'em most of all.

I think the song you want is "Molasses, Molasses" by Spike Jones. It's on YouTube.

To answer the original question: I have never heard this song.

Also, though I think it may be something to do with sugar, I don't really know what molasses is/are.

Or shortening bread, though I have an idea 'mama's little baby' loves it.

I used to think that 'shortening' must be a verb, ie something done to the bread, like pinching the crust from both ends of the loaf because they LIED to you and told you crusts would give you curly hair, then told you off for eating the crusts from each end instead of working your way down the loaf. That 'shortened' the loaf.

Aha, it seems to be like 'treacle'.

So

Half a pound of tuppenny rice
Half a pound of treacle
That's the way the money goes
Pop goes the weasel.

No idea what it means or where it comes from. Learned it as nursery rhyme as a kid

Shortnin' bread is a foidstuff made with flour, sugar or molasses, and butter or lard (or vegetable shortenibg these days). Mix it all together, make flat strips, and fry it in oil (bake if your gallbladder has troubles).

I worked out of state.

Joe Froggers, made with blackjstrap molasses arrived for my birthday.
A large donkey shaped cookie, in a tin was filled with lots of "road-apples."

THE recipe creates large, 6inch cookies, and is posted in multiple media outlets.

Joe Froggers Cookies are soft, oversized molasses cookies flavored with rum and they date back to the Revolutionary War .
The story I read, (LA Times c 1966) said they were popular with fishermen on the river and they picked them up hot in the early morning hours.g

RECIPE

Ingredients

1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon hot water
1 cup unsulphured dark molasses
2-1/2 tablespoons dark rum
31/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
1-1/2 teaspoons table salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1-1/4 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, softened, plus more for baking sheets
1 cup granulated sugar, plus more for rolling

My brother and I indulged in the leftover rum....preferably, 151.
We doubled the spices.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

This song is in reference to the great Boston MOLASSES and Original flood of January 15, 1919

MOLASSES
Words and Music by Tom Rowe
published by Outer Green Music, 1985

African Man cuts the sugar cane,
Oh Molasses He works in the sun, he works in the rain.
Oh molasses rhum Then he loads it up on a wooden ship,
Sends it off on a northern trip.
Oh molasses, oh molasses rhum.

Oh molasses, Ole New England tea.
You killed my Grampa, killed my Pa.
And you sure as hell are a killin' me.
Oh molasses, oh molasses rhum.

When they fought the war for the Colonies;
They fought it over New England tea.
Old King George put a tax on it,
The Colonies nearly took a fit. In the time of the nineteen-seventeen war;
Molasses sitting on the Boston shore.
When they pumped it in it was twelve degrees,
A long cold night in a Boston freeze.
In the morning it was forty-two Molasses vat split clean in two.
Two million gallons covered the bay
Twenty-six people drowned in the flood that day.

Grampa, he died cuttin' cane.
Pa went down in the great brown rain.
But I won't go in a pool of blood,
I won't drown in a blackstrap flood;
But still I'll go down to molasses,
OOh molasses rhum.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Thank you for writing down all the verses of this song. My mom and her sister remembered it from when they were girls. They forgot most of the verses, but loved to sing the part about dreaming of Shredded Wheat and the mattress half gone!

The name of the song is “. ‘Lasses”.   And none of you have the lyrics right. I’ve been singing the song for over 50 years.

I have a CD called "Saxophony! Jubilee Honkers and Shouters" which includes a track by Buddy Lucas called "Sopping Molasses". I assumed it was about molasses after some sort of transmogrification into alcohol, but the words aren't exactly explicit.

I wish they'd make moles out of all of the lasses,
And I were a mole, I would smell the molasses.
Role your leg over, etc.
