Lyr Req: I Like Molasses (and other molasses songs

Subject: Silly Song, 'I Like Molasses' From: Parson Date: 14 Sep 00 - 12:48 AM This is NOT a request for lyrics. Rather it is a request, yes or no, if you have ever heard this silly song. My Dad used to sing it to us kids as a joke, usually at breakfast, (not a good idea). I never knew if it was something he made up, or if it went farther than that. Has anyone ever heard of this song. I know all the words to the one verse he always sang. If there is more than one verse, then yes, I would like to know them. Randall |

Senator Sam, being a country boy from the western mountains of N.C., replied, "Well, you just eat your 'lasses. Then you can have some mo' 'lasses! Grandpa's teeth are missin', ever' single one. This would be an easy song to put other verses on. It's great fun to sing it. The fellow I learned it from was a Native American and worked for a natural gas pipeline company. He was visiting another pipeline worker whose name was Ralph "Bones" Gentry in Jackson, Missouri. Bones was about the finest person in the world. His house was open every weekend to pickers from everywhere. I hope the above is useful. |

Also, though I think it may be something to do with sugar, I don't really know what molasses is/are. Or shortening bread, though I have an idea 'mama's little baby' loves it. I used to think that 'shortening' must be a verb, ie something done to the bread, like pinching the crust from both ends of the loaf because they LIED to you and told you crusts would give you curly hair, then told you off for eating the crusts from each end instead of working your way down the loaf. That 'shortened' the loaf. |

Jubilee Honkers and Shouters" which includes a track by Buddy Lucas called "Sopping Molasses". I assumed it was about molasses after some sort of transmogrification into alcohol, but the words aren't exactly explicit. |
