Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Rick Fielding Date: 14 Sep 00 - 09:04 PM Hey Mbo, don't forget "Slide Of Of Your Satin Sheets"! Love Johnny P. I wish more "new country" artists had his "real" quality. Saw him when I was about 18, at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. Rick |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Mbo Date: 14 Sep 00 - 09:15 PM Oh, that's another good one! |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Jim the Bart Date: 14 Sep 00 - 09:16 PM Back in a past life, when I was a C&W singer wannabee, our paths kept crossing in odd ways and places. I saw him lose a weeks pay at Blackjack in Reno and a boot at a arty in Grand Rapids, Mich. I've always admired his music. He's been an incorrigible drinker & gambler and has lot's of other good traits. "Don't Take Her She's All I got" and "Slide Off of Your Satin Sheets" have been long time favorites. |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Banjer Date: 14 Sep 00 - 09:22 PM On a recent one of the 'Country Family Reunion' shows I saw Johnny Paycheck. He says he has found the Lord and stopped his wild ways. He did a beautiful rendition of the Old Rugged Cross, and I wish him the best in his efforts. There are too few of his talent left and I hope to enjoy them as long as possible. sounds kind of selfish I know, but let's face it, country Music ain't what is was. |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Mbo Date: 14 Sep 00 - 09:36 PM I just sang "Don't Take She's All I Got" in HearMe! |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: tradsteve Date: 14 Sep 00 - 11:53 PM All I know is, that in the eighties, he shot a man in a bar over an argument about which tastes better Deer or Squirrel. True Story. Did hard time. |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: ddw Date: 14 Sep 00 - 11:59 PM Is he recording again? Last I heard was that he shot some guy in a barroom brawl, went to prison for a couple of years and none of the record companies would have anything to do with him. Bit a hellion, but I do like his music. david |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Rick Fielding Date: 15 Sep 00 - 12:02 AM You gotta love a man with convictions. By the way, which DOES taste best? Went downstairs after I saw this and got an old J.P's Greatest hits album. Sounded good. The guy BELIEVED! Rick |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: ddw Date: 15 Sep 00 - 12:28 AM Hey banjer — I agree country music ain't what it was, but don't you think it's just a cycle? Back in the '50s country got all muddied up with pop and we put up with a lot of schlock — especially out of Nashville — until Merle Haggard and the boys in Bakersfield put it back on track for a few years. It got pretty bad again in the mid '80s when Dolly went pop and everybody else followed; I was hoping Dwight Yoakam and Randy Travis would pull it back, but they seemed to go bust pretty quickly — or maybe I just gave up. I haven't listened to much country since Achy Breaky Heart took over and The Judds broke up. I'll give it a few more years to get over the latest Pablum Country phase and try again. Good music ALWAYS comes back. cheers, david |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Fortunato Date: 15 Sep 00 - 01:01 PM Recently my 15 year old "country music hater" played me a new punk cd, 2nd cut was ...Shove it. When I told him it was recorded by Paycheck and was a country song he nearly soiled his britches. (I stifled my extreme pleasure at his discomfort out altruism) hee hee fortunato/chance |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: SINSULL Date: 15 Sep 00 - 02:44 PM Fortunato, I had a similar moment of triumph when my son and his friend were "rapping" Leaving On A Jet Plane and I gave them the next line. Sheer Horror when they found out it was a hit in the 60s. Pure disgust when I proved it with a reel to reel recording. My victory was short lived. They proceeded to raid my tape collection and plagiarize bits and pieces to create their own raps. |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: guinnesschik Date: 15 Sep 00 - 04:38 PM Rick: Deer tastes better. Squirrel tastes like chicken. ;-) |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Steve Latimer Date: 15 Sep 00 - 04:44 PM A friend of mine had a band called "Tastes Like Chicken" Don't know a lot about Johnny Paycheck other than Take this Job. I did like Willie introducing him on his Willie and Family Live album. His line was something like "Man, and they call me an outlaw." Rick, are there any artists that you don't have a recording of? |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: SINSULL Date: 15 Sep 00 - 04:56 PM Yeah Rick. Mbo loves them all and you own them all. |
Subject: RE: Doesn't any body know Johnny Paycheck From: Banjer Date: 15 Sep 00 - 07:13 PM In answer to ddw's question, I just don't know anymore. I haven't listened to any radio stations for ages. I usually make my own music or listen to selected (by me) tapes and CD's. Ricky Skaggs seemed to be making an effort in retaining the old country sound in many of his recordings, but alas he got overun by pressure. I know that music is an ever eveolving thing and i can appreciate that. It would be awful boring if there was never a change. I just grew up spending Saturday nights listening to 'The GRAND OLE' OPRY, brought to you by the National Life And Accident Insurance Company in Nashville, Tennessee. Broadcast from the facilites of WSM, in Nashville, coming to you live. It's time for the Grand Ole Opry, Let her go boys' Nostalgia, maybe? Longing for simpler times? Perhaps. But maybe hearing my inner self telling others that yu cannot know where you 're headed if you forget where you've been. |
