I have a recording of this by Alma Cogan.
The last verse goes:

I used to sing this with the family kids and substituted their names for the tax collector. Little ones think it's hysterical.

There was a recording of it by Rusty Draper, who also popularized "Freight Train" with a pop single in the 1950s. Guess he had a thing about trains. Draper's recording of "Middle of the House" ended with the sound of the train coming through. I remember the lyric as "The railroad RUNS through the middle of the house." I taught it to my cousins last year; they live in Maryland and a railroad runs along the back of their backyard.
