Horrifying news!!! Finnegan's Walk has cancelled Rick Kane's Wednesday night gig! The filthy swine (plural...refers to the management of Finnegan's)! If they think we're going to give them any more free publicity on Mudcat they're sadly mistaken.

I suspect it was the usual factor that leads to the cancellation of folk gigs...they didn't want to spend the money. So...you can now go to Finnegan's Walk and goggle at the 15 TV screens all night, and drink yourself pie-eyed, and start up "FEEEELLLINGS" for the umpteenth time on the jukebox....instead of listening to Rick play "Jesse With The Long Hair Hangin' Down". Blaaaagh!

In another fast-breaking story from beautiful downtown Orillia, Ontario....

FLATTOP DEFROCKED!!!

Yes, after decades as a confirmed atheist and rationalist, flattop has been officially defrocked by the AAA...Amalgamated Atheists of America! It happened because of some recent postings to Mudcat, as well as some highly compromising PM's to Praise (leaked by some as yet unidentified source at Microsoft)...the aforesaid postings and PM's contained certain statements indicating a degree of budding spiritual awareness on flattop's part, indeed an incipient tendency toward believing in things that can't necessarily be proven by the scientific method.

Following a closed meeting of the governing body of the AAA, a press release by that same body has confirmed the dreadful news. flattop has been expelled for life from the Amagamated Atheists of America, excommunicated, and his name struck from the list of the "saved" in the Great Book of Science.

He may no longer claim the ironclad protection of rationalism, logic, and proven fact. He has been cast out into the outer darkness of emotion, illogicality, superstition, and crop circles.

His little black science book has been confiscated. He is as one dead, bereft of hope, deprived of wise counsel, adrift on a sea of new age drivel and false expectations.

flattop has as yet been unavailable for comment, and appears to be avoiding contact with the press at what must be, for him, a very trying time. Close relatives say that they have no idea where he is or what he is doing. Stay tuned for further bulletins, as they come in.

Mullet headed greaseballs that can't spell amalgamated. Although I do think the new way of spelling it without the 'l' has a certain poetry to it.

Good thing you didn't say "deflowered", Little Hawk. That could have given him an even bigger indentity crisis than what he's going through with the "defrocked" thang.

I have to admit, when I saw the title of this thread, I thought that you'd found out that Ol' Flatso's a transvestite or something.

Glad it was the "or something"... Although finding out that flatso has spiritual tendencies is pretty shocking in itself. Maybe we'll see him at the next circle dance, eh?

... One can only speculate as to the causes or future effects of this revelation at this point.

Well Sisns, I gotta' agree. However and whatever that situation is.........As the 'Catter often voted most likely to over the top, I gots ta' say............Let's just say that my read on the initial post is that its pretty close to being past the generally accepted kidding, even in good fun.

Hawk, I luv ya' and I have no idea what the joke is here, but the belief thing may well be grabbing a few others around here with a sharp claw. Maybe flattop isn't bothered, but we have some others who might be and although I rarely agree with many of my fellow 'Catters beliefs when we are in the serious discussions (nor they mine), we generally don't tread too harshly on them either. Perhaps we can see the humor, perhaps not.......I've found that I value so many other things first and above, that making some comments, even in jest isn't worth the hard feelings..........I could be wrong though...often am!!

Just for the record, and I am speaking for myself alone and not for flattop, flattop is someone I am proud to call friend and proud to be called friend by, in return.

WHY? BECAUSE WE HAVE TAKEN THE TIME AND TROUBLE TO BEGIN ACTUALLY GETTING TO KNOW ONE ANOTHER, AS I HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT IN VARIOUS THREADS, PARTICULARLY OF LATE.

And although it is no one's biz, we have not even come close to the beginning of any discussion that would lead in the direction indicated.

His spiritual life is between him and Whoever Whatever Whyever If-ever.... and being a friend of mine does not require conversion to what I believe.

His spiritual life is NOT IMHO fit subject for a thread. Tease me all you like, Little Hawk, but pick on a friend of mine and you are likely to see a side of me better left alone.

Hawk, I say this next as a friendly remark from your MudSister. If you persist with this level of humor, you will be treated by many Mudcatters as a troll looking to promote trouble. If that isn't what you had in mind, simply apologize right here in this thread for your poor aim, and that will be the end of the trouoble as far as I am concerned.

But you'll have to get straight with flattop on your own. I know he knows you better. Maybe he saw the joke. I hope so because otherwise, your thread probably harmed your friend.

Please don't be too hard on Little Hawk. His humour and his lecturing songs often miss the mark. However, Little Hawk has at least a hundred great songs with lyrics full of images, interesting chords and melodies.

To redeem himself I'd like him to post his lyrics for one or several of his songs from this list; Summers Gone, Little Crow Woman, The Pilgram, (the one about Bosnia), Cuthbert County, Eyes of Fire.

He has written many more but my memory is shoddy and shabby. I've been up and on the road since 6am, just got home, and I have to get up at 6am again tomorrow and head for Toronto.

And say sorry here for the poor aim, and taking the names of a MudSister and a MudBrother in vain.

Deal? Let me hear, AMEN.

I have to get up early too. So I will come see this in the AM.

And Mary,

At one place that I worked, a character would come in off the street with a plastic bowl covered in tinfoil over his head. Some of my fellow workers were fightened by him but I found him quite reasonable to talk to except for the bowl and the tinfoil. Well, Little Hawk may be just one layer of tinfoil and one pirece of tupperware closer to receiving information from Microsoft. He's playing a game that I sometimes play on him of stretching a tiny piece of information into a creative narrative.

Thanks, flattop. I have a similar "acquaintance" who rides the subway with a paper bag on his head - no eye holes, just a brown sack. He can't bare people looking at him and otherwise is totally normal. I guess I have to spend more time on the BS threads so I have a clue. By the way, I did spend time searching out Amalgamated Atheists unsuccessfully on the web -- DUUHHH. I can be painfully naive.

Geez, guys, I thought it was all so ridiculous that NO ONE would take it seriously...but I guess flattop has been straightening it out for me in my absence. Actually, the whole thing stemmed from our last get together (me and flattop, and friends) at Finnegan's Walk, on the melancholy occasion of Rick Kane's Not-gig (they had cancelled him, unbeknownst to us...). Flattop mentioned something about some conversation he had had with Praise at some point (all his comments about her were entirely positive), and he did say that he had made a few statements which might ALMOST lead one to believe that he was forming new spiritual beliefs...or something like that...he was being humorous.

So...the Rick Kane part really was news...of a sort relevant to a folk forum, I think.

...While the flattop bulletin was sheer wacko humour on my part. It just seemed appropriately paranoid to suggest that someone at Microsoft might be tapping into PM's, but I guess I should have put one of those funny-face emoticons at the end of it all...like this: :-D

or this: :-)

I am really tickled pink that SINSULL actually went looking for the Amalgamated Atheists of America!!! :-)

Or is it "Amagamated"???

Anyway, if you really want an apology...okay, I apologize, with all good humour. No harm intended.

I love bugging flattop...and he is such a good sport about it...in fact, I believe he enjoys it.

Oh, sorry I took so long to get back on this thread...I am simply too busy these days. As for flattop, he seems to be even busier than I am. "No rest for the wicked", as they say.

Well Hawk, it's just that picking on each other in the threads can get out of hand so fast and pull so many people into the goofing and de-goofing process. I know a lot of you Toronto area folks know each other, but see all that network of friendships is invisible to the rest of us. Be careful about doing things here at the Cat to work out stuff that happens between you in 3D. This is sort of a separate relationship here at the Cat, from the rest of how you deal with each other, and it has its own wacky dynamic.

Oh yeah, and also, it's one thing to tease people you know in person, here. But it's a little more edgy and risky to tease people you haven't gotten to know first. And that takes time.

I say all this becasue I have the unmitigated gall of someone who has been around here for a whole, lessee, 7 months if I counted right. And as your "older" if not wiser MudSister. And I say it here instead of in PM because... other newer members may benefit from seeing something unsettling handled in the open.

Thanks for clearing it up. Pals?

Praise - sorry if I said anything about flattop that bugged you.

I think if Little Hawk really got out of line picking on flattop, that flattop or sophocleese would probably let him know. Immediately!

God knows flattop's picked on Little Hawk enough...
although usually in person, not on Mudcat.

So, does all this mean that flattop's NOT going to come to one of my circle dances? *sigh*

Little Hawk,
Embarrassing but true with rare exception I believe anything anyone tells me. Last spring I set my clock ahead two days early because my brother (who knows of my affliction) called to remind me to turn it ahead. When I said " I thought it was this weekend", he replied "I knew you would get it mixed up." I was late for work the next day. My manager can't believe the how easy I am to fool. Over educated, well travelled, bright and intelligent but I choose to accept almost everything at face value.
I do not want an apology. It was with great humility that I exposed my stupidity to the entire 'Cat. And now I have a wealth of information on the atheist movement in America. My most fascinating discovery is that they too have a book of rules. You can't believe in god or ESP to be a true non-believer. A sort of atheist catechism. So I am not only dumb as a doorknob (from a less controversial thread) but not true atheist.
Maybe just a PM warning me "this is for entertainment purposes only" would help.

I forgot to mention that this guy wore the tinfoil to block out radio waves. Instead of picking on Little Hawk we should take up a collection to buy him some tinfiol and tupperware.

You know the funny thing is that I have hurt Little Hawks feelings on mudcat and no one came to his defense. I have also accused him on threads of enjoying breastfeeding, having his head sunburned in Havana and having trouble dumping women. No one defended him. What gives here? Is the mudcat nonClique overpowering the Orillia nonClique in my defense? I don't get it.

Ok Hess. I told Praise last night that, if this thread didn't die a quick death, I might have to confess that there is a grain of truth in what little Hawk wrote. (You know, I didn't like it when you dismissed my observations on the old Kane thread about the Sheriff's love for Jesse. There's always a grain of truth.) Now I have to confess in front of these folk fan, who, as far as I can tell, are as straight as the arrow that killed Cock Robin, that I went to one of your moon dances. That I danced. That you were a wonderful dance instructor, soft and gentle, stifling your laughter when I tripped and staggered. And the music that you played, every cut was marvelous. I had no idea that you had such good musical taste.

I must also confess that I've been too soft on Little Hawk recently. Not only dancing with him but letting him go on and on in the restaurant about his thousands of past lives as both men and women, possible being raped in some, possibly being the raper in others. But we did have fun with our children's hamburgers, didn't we? Wasn't it great that waitress let us both order from the children's menu hessy?

Well I'll answer that. Flattop, if you did wrong and n know it, you should take corrective action. But I bristled on your behalf because you have taken the time and trouble to start a friendship bewtween us. If Little Hawk and I had had that start, I'd be beating you up something awful if you did as bad as you say.

And it isn't at ALL that I don't care about or like you, Little Hawk. It's just that sometimes I don't know how to take what you write simply because I have no context for it-- we don't have any communication to build from, so I wouldn't have a clue where to start. I wouldn't know if what someone writes means you are being messed with or loved deeply, from here. And not knowing you, I can't read your feelings from what you post, usually.

I think that is one of the great things about Mudcat-- we can find, from among the number and variety of people here, those with whom we wish to become real friends, and the tools of the Mudcat can help us do that. So, Hawk, I would encourage you to think about those you have encountered here that you would like to know better, and start building acquaintances into friends where you can.

And flattop, you and Little Hawk already are friends, and hesperis you are too, right? How about you show the rest of us how to appreciate your friends a little more, um, clearly? Cuz cute as the teasing reads, it doesn't let me see you as people very clearly, either in how you show yourselves or in the light you shed on each other.

I'm tired and not saying this well. I don't mean to preach. I am really asking for some of this just to make a little more sense a little more simply. Play nice till we know each other better? Till we can tell the jokes from the barbs?

Things get pretty wacky around here (in Orillia), cos we all have a weird sense of humour...I can understand that it sometimes confuses others on the Mudcat. Actually, there are a whole bunch of Mudcatters I would love to meet in person, and maybe I will come down to one of the events in awhile. Mary Mac told me about one that's happening near Washington DC (in November sometime?). I could maybe come to that. We shall see.

At this point I am most eager to meet Mbo, Spaw, Praise, Lena, Moonjen, Lonesome EJ, Kat, SINSULL, and many many others. I'd like to meet Brendy too, but I guess he's in Europe somewhere.

Are there any Mudcat getogethers in New York State?

Hey, now that Mbo is back I hope he has made a contribution to the 100 Practical Uses For Spaw thread...

I actually put in a serious music thread about the 12th Fret guitar store. If you're into guitars, check out their website at 12fret.com

Okay, off to the other threads...

Little Hawk, there are enough of us to try a meet somewhere between you all and Hardiman and me from northern PA, plus a batch of NY-ers like MMario, Irish Sergeant, and Burke... who else.... oh yeah, is it Don Meixner not too far from Syracuse? I'm tired and can't recall who else is nearby. Biskit would probably link up if in the area. Aim for late spring, now that snow has flown here.... we could take up a collection to get Mbo to come too.

Or late summer, meet up with all the MiscChucks and NY-ers and us, at a family cabin in the Adirondacks roughly across Lake Champlain from Burlington, VT, near the time of the annual Lake C festival. You'd have to bring the Orillian clan (sounds like an offshoot of Klingons, but I know you are all delightful).

Did you know that whenever I see the word {Orillia], I think it is a fake town like Lake Wobegon, because I pronounce it O Really?-Ah. Please send me the link to the Orillia Chamber of Commerce or some such so I can be sure!

flattop - "I had no idea that you had such good musical taste." Why, thank you! Most of those pieces are the ones I've been taught, so the 'good taste' is actually from my instructors! The second CD from Great Lakes Dance Camp was compiled from a list of all our favorite dances from the camp. I wish that the 'jazz feel' piano piece we did an Earth dance to could have been included, but it was very long.

I am really looking forward to the Facilitator's Gathering this weekend, and I'll be sure to bring back even more great music. If you ever remember anything that you particularly like, I could give you a source for buying the music. (If I have a source.)

Circle Dancing is an offshoot of Folk Dancing, and therefore it goes really well with Folk Music. It's all created by people who love a particular piece of music, and create a dance. And then other people learn the dance, and love it, and teach it to other people... The spark of love that originated it just gets bigger as it gets passed on.

"stifling your laughter when I tripped and staggered." Well, you did amazingly well for your first time circle dancing! I still mess up sometimes. At last month's dance, I had to ask Little Hawk to take over calling out the steps for one dance, because I was getting too high to handle that and my own steps, and shaping the circle energy, and paying attention to everyone else's steps to keep in the flow.........I kinda tripped a few times.
(I think that's why some songs say "Let us now trip a measure"...)

"Wasn't it great that waitress let us both order from the children's menu." Yeah. Amazing what happens when you ask. A lot of people hated me in high school because I got deals on assignments....... I'd ask the teacher in advance for a break if I was going to be away performing or whatever. Then people who hadn't thought of asking for what they needed called me a 'Teacher's Pet' - yuck!

Glad you liked it. The dance, I mean.

(But what did you say to sophocleese about it behind my back, hmmmm?)

I have to admit, you didn't laugh too much at the rest of us when we rolled all over the ground afterwards to get rid of the excess energy. I appreciated that.

I guess I was the only one who believed that Microsoft had hacked into Praise's PMs and forwarded the information on to the AAA. I've been taking overdoses of Nyquil, maybe that's the problem.

Yeah, I tried putting the guinea pig on Nyquil, and she's been acting really strange ever since... :-) (joke, okay?)

Oh my god! You gave Nyquil to a guinea pig??? I'll check out the poison center websites for antidotes. I am beginning to hate you Hawk. Just because I came out of the closet doesn't mean I'm not still sensitive about it. (joke, okei?) (that's Skarpi talk).

Hawk, [skarpi iceland] is a Mudcat member named Skarpi who lives in Iceland. He is so adorable... been around lots longer than me. See Mudcat Resources in Quick Links (little box on main forum page) for his photo. His English has incredible verve and adorability. Do a search and read some of his posts in old threads and it will all make sense. He's very playful-- you would enjoy each other.

SINSULL,

I have compassion for your situation. My mother and one of my sisters have the same problem (in a family full of smart-asses). I don't think it's stupidity. I just think that some people don't have a very well developed sense of irony.

This is fair warning for everybody... Probably fifty or more percent of the things that are posted to the Mudcat forum contain at least some tongue-in-cheek humor. You can count on it. If something doesn't sound right to you, perhaps the way to find out whether or not the poster was serious would be inquire by PM.

Best wishes to everyone

Carol

Thanks Carol. Now I really need some advice. With the recent drop in stockmarket prices, I sold off all my tech stocks. I have an opportunity to invest in a local division of the MTA which owns the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge will soon be tolled and this investment could mean the difference between retiring early and being homeless. What do think? Is a 10% share in the Brooklyn Bridge a good investment?

Is there a McDonald's at either end?

Is there ever not a Micky D's at the other end? But Spaw, those plastic gloves are for handling the food not fondling the help. Still can't believe they are only going for $25000. Maybe he actually did find the missing money tucked away in a body cavity...
Sinsull, practicing irony.
