Subject: Looking For New Material From: GUEST,Ian, Edinburgh. Date: 12 Oct 00 - 10:01 AM Perhaps you Mudcatters can help. I'm an amateur Folksinger/songwriter in Edinburgh. I've done the Scottish Folk Stuff(200+ songs from that genre) until I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel. I tried mixing it with a little of the quieter Steve Earle numbers, then went through the entire Richard Thompson Archive looking for new songs to sing, and there are a few there. Bearing the above in mind, can anyone suggest a new source of material for me? My gratitude goes to anyone who can suggest a new direction for me. Cheers, Calach, (the home country). P.S.... don't you just love it when England gets beaten at football? |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: GospelPicker (inactive) Date: 12 Oct 00 - 10:09 AM You ought to try the Proclaimers... folkies from Edinburgh who had the big hit with "500 Miles (I'm Gonna Be)"... no, not the old folk song "500 Miles" just a neat little folk/pop number with catchy lyrics (and they even say "haver" instead of "puke" when describing a drunk man! How thoughtful!) They also have many beautiful ballads... all done in their unique way (twin brothers with GORGEOUS brogues) Check out "Sunshine On Leith" (the album with the big hit and a song called "I'm On My Way"... just fun, well-written, pub-sing-along, good timey stuff. GospelPicker @:()>[+] P.S. I am playing on the Mudcat HearMe concert series on the 26th at 8pm... if you make yourself known I'll play a couple of their tunes for 'ya.

Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Oct 00 - 10:18 AM Delamitri would fit the bill I think. I also have an excelent rousing album of new scottish folk stuff called Folk'n'hell. I will post some details when I get home and can see the sleeve notes. Cheers D the G

Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: Midchuck Date: 12 Oct 00 - 12:34 PM Start with what bigchuck said. Then add: Stan Rogers Jim Ringer Utah Phillips Lou and Peter Berryman, if you can manage their lyrics The Austin Lounge Lizards Kipling and Bellamy (try to find "Naulakha Redux" by Rogers and Barrand - I don't know if it's been exported) Peter. |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: marshman Date: 12 Oct 00 - 01:20 PM Some mighty good suggestions thus far; I would add Tim O'Brien (The Crossing) Tim & Mollie O'Brien Laurie Lewis (True Stories, Restless Rambling Heart) Peter Rowen Robin & Linda Williams, and David Wilkie (Cowboy Celtic) hope I didn't repeat anyone |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: Dave the Gnome Date: 12 Oct 00 - 03:38 PM The Album I refered to earlier is called Folk 'n' Hell on the hemisphere (emi) label - described as 'fiery new music from Scotland'. The tracks (I won't name them) are by - Jim Sutherland Burach Bongshang Shooglenifty Paul Mounsey The Colour of Memory Coelbeg Seelyhoo Dougie Maclean Fergus MacKenzie and Simon Thoumire The Humpff family Rock, Salt and Nails The Poozies The Iron Horse Tannas Khartoum Heroes Old blind dogs I don't think there is one track I don't like so I guess it would be worth researching any of the above artists. There are some old amongst the new there but even the more established names like Jim Sutherland, Dougie Maclean and The Poozies have recorded really exciting new stuff here. Good Luck Dave the Gnome

Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: Metchosin Date: 12 Oct 00 - 11:45 PM GospelPicker, I always thought to "haver" meant to talk nonsense, I've never heard it as a reference to vomiting before, interesting....sort of ruined the song for me. Ian, I'm assuming you have checked out the Old Blind Dogs earlier material. |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: Metchosin Date: 12 Oct 00 - 11:50 PM besides why would a man professing his love "vomit" to someone. *BG* |
Subject: RE: Help: Looking For New Material From: GospelPicker (inactive) Date: 13 Oct 00 - 11:43 AM I was told that "haver" meant "vomit" kinda like heave does... I imagined the singer was saying that if he was drunk and sick, she'd be the one comforting him... BUT I asked a friend who i don't see often, but is Scottish by birth, and he agreed with you... "haver" means to babble or talk non-stop or talk silly stuff... he did, however, say that many other folks had heard the "vomit" story and he was not surprised... I hope the song is back in your good graces now... GospelPicker @:()>[+]
