Subject: So long, Richard Farnsworth From: katlaughing Date: 12 Oct 00 - 12:06 PM One of my favourite actors, Richard Farnsworth, took his life on the 7th, to escape the pain of bone cancer. I never knew he was a stuntman, often for Roy Rogers, driving a chariot in The Ten Commandments, or doubling for Kirk Douglas in Spartacus. He actor received Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for his part in "The Straight Story." The Oscar nomination came when he was 79. He was the oldest actor to ever be nominated for that award. He was 80 when he took his life with a gun. I loved his movie, "The Grey Fox." It always comes to mind when I hear the Chieftains, as that is one of the first times I ever heard their music. I was mesmerised by the sound and the elegant interweaving of it and the movie scenes. I am saddened at this loss, but understand his desire to be free of the pain and agony of a slower death. Somehow, the way he chose to go seems to fit the rugged, soft-spoken, gentlemanly character we all came to equate him with; the old cowboy who knew how to put a lame horse out of its misery, doing the same for hmself.

He was so softspoken and likeable...truly someone I would have liked to have met. |

He played a groundskeeper who was a friend of the "artesians" who supposedly provided the "artesian water" for some product or other (Bartles & Jaymes?) I've long since forgotten the product, but fondly remember Farnsworth's wonderful comic delivery. And what a great face! He'll surely be missed. pj |

I've plugged it to anyone who would listen. My favorite scene of Farnsworths is in "The Natural" with Robert Redford when he plays "guess that tune" in the dugout with Wilford Brimley. He had such a "real" quality about him that never looked like he was acting. I'll miss him too. |

I also saw that I had missed the death of one of my all time favorites, Richard Mulligan. If he had done nothing besides create the role of Bert in "Soap" he would have been a remarkable talent. The first time I saw Grey Fox there was an audible sexual murmur out of the audience during the scene in which he was shown in bed with his ladyfriend the photographer. Sexy bastard well into his sixties. Every one of his interviews made him sound kind, humble and grateful for what he had. We will not see his like again. ....though thy worldly task has done, home art gone and ta'en thy wages....

Just a bit of thread creep - there is NO reason someone should be in such misery he feels he has to take his life. Someone should have gotten a better pain management team for him. I have nothing to add in the way of words, my thoughts have pretty well been covered as well or better by others. He was just about my favorite actor of all time, mostly because he didn't appear to be acting, just being the person he was playing, a good bit of which was always Richard Farnsworth.
I am a picture collector, and would like to share with you all my two favorite pictures of Richard Farnsworth. I will leave them up at least a month.

I know the other reason I was always so taken with him is he reminds me so much of my dad, and by extension, my granddad; those kinda quiet old West men, with their own brand of chivarly; salt of the earth kind of people. kat |
