Subject: can you help me win a war? From: dalek Date: 16 Oct 00 - 11:21 AM I’m trying to find the tab for "Forever Autumn", from Jeff Wayne’s “War of the Worlds." I suppose I could buy the sheet music, but I have trouble with the dots and sticks, and I want to play it on twelve-string. Llanfair taught me some basic chords, but I want it to be more "twiddley." Web Ferret has been, to be frank, absolutely pants! And keeps giving me world war 3 info! Help catters! A frustrated Dalek

Subject: RE: can you help me win a war? From: Sorcha Date: 16 Oct 00 - 01:36 PM Well, I found a MIDI file; put it into MidiNotate and the entire score was about 65 pages...........I extracted the first line (usually the melody) and it was 17 pages long. MidiNotate will not send or copy for me, and it is dots. Fairly complicated dots, too. I would guess that the tab is going to be pretty complicated too. I don't have a web page to try to post it on, do you have any options? Suggestions, anybody? |

Subject: RE: can you help me win a war? From: Little Hawk Date: 16 Oct 00 - 05:49 PM Okay, I can't help you with the War of the Worlds thing, I'm sorry to say...but in a general sense, here is how you win a war: 1. Make sure in the first place that it is POSSIBLE to win said war...in other words, check out the odds. If the Japanese had done this in 1941, and cooler heads had prevailed, they would NOT have launched a war on the USA which had a gross national product ten times larger than their own. 2. If you think it is POSSIBLE to win, and you think there is NO OTHER WAY out, then launch said war with absolute determination and give it your utmost effort possible to the limit of your strength. 3. Accept the fact that there will be losses, probably heavy ones. 4. Do not unnecessarily divide your forces (as Custer did at Little Big Horn, and the Japanese did at Midway). 5. Hit the enemy where they are weakest. 6. Cut their supply lines. 7. Isolate their strong points and starve them out. 8. Use good reconaissance and good intelligence work at all times. 9. Maximize production efficiency. 10. Fight according to strategic realities, not emotional considerations. Had Hitler done so, he would not have lost an army in Stalingrad, for example. 11. When the enemy is stronger, it is wise to defend carefully. When you are stronger, then attack. 12. Don't defend useless ground or weak positions. Give up such ground. 13. If you reach the point where you cannot win on the battlefield, negotiate...or resort to guerilla warfare. A determined guerilla force may eventually wear down a more powerful conventional occupying force and destroy its will to fight, as the Vietnamese did when resisting France and America. 14. Believe in your cause. If you can't do that, don't fight. All of the above assumes that either you...or the other side...or both...have missed the main point of human existence, which is that we are all of one spirit. "We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms." |

Subject: RE: can you help me win a war? From: Zebedee Date: 16 Oct 00 - 05:56 PM Dalek, There are a number of FTP sites where the tab is apparently available. I just don't have the time to sort through them at the moment. Get back here, or by personal message and I'll give you the details of how to find the tab for yourself. Zeb |

Subject: RE: can you help me win a war? From: Zebedee Date: 16 Oct 00 - 06:09 PM MMario, The MIDI of the song is really easy to find. You could try this link I'm curious, however, as to why you want Sorcha to PM it to you. Isn't the Mudcat meant to be about sharing? Zeb |

Subject: Lyr Add: FOREVER AUTUMN (Jeff Wayne) From: Sorcha Date: 16 Oct 00 - 06:24 PM FOREVER AUTUMN The summer sun is fading as the year grows old, And darker days are drawing near. The winter winds will be much colder, Now you're not here. I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky, And one by one they disappear. I wish that I was flying with them, Now you're not here. Like the sun through the trees you came to love me, Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away, Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way, You always loved this time of year. Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now, 'cause you're not here, 'cause you're not here, 'cause you're not here... Like the sun through the trees you came to love me, Like a leaf on a breeze you blew away. A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes, As if to hide a lonely tear. My life will be forever autumn, 'cause you're not here, 'cause you're not here, 'cause you're not here... (c) Jeff Wayne. |

Subject: RE: can you help me win a war? From: Zebedee Date: 16 Oct 00 - 07:14 PM Wavestar, you are mistaken. But Justin Heyward (who was a member of the Moody Blues, did) so you weren't far wrong. Zeb |

Subject: RE: can you help me win a war? From: MMario Date: 16 Oct 00 - 10:12 PM zeb - I wanted her to send it so I could try fiddling around with it. I wanted to see if I could convert it and pull it into one of the programs that set chords to the melody - to see if I could find a repeat pattern of chords that might satisfy dalek. I asked her to do it in a pm or e-mail because I didn't want to muddle up the thread - though like an idiot I forgot that others might like a link to the midi as well. However, I frequently have to have someone send me midi's rather then fetching them myself, as my content filter blocks a large percentage of sites. and I admit I was being lazy and didn't want to take the time and effort to do a search.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: FOREVER AUTUMN (Jeff Wayne) From: GUEST,AL Date: 17 Oct 00 - 12:39 AM I just whipped it out and dashed off a few chords. This is more filk, since it is from Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War Of The Worlds. A quirky concept album from 1978, I rushed right out and ordered it when I found it had been rereleased on CD. Richard Burton is the Journalist/Narrator, Julie Covington as Beth( Covington starred in BBC's "Little Ladies" which also had Rula Lenska - the actress Americans had never heard of when she did a shampoo commercial). Covington also recorded the first (and best) "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina before the show ever staged. David Essex is the Artilleryman and Phil Lynott plays Parson Nathaniel. Other musicians include Justin Hayward and Chris Thompson. Credits for the song are Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass. It is written in Dm but you may find Em easier. The second line is a simple walkdown where you hold your 1st finger on the C (2nd string) and play the C, Em and Am. Good luck with it. FOREVER AUTUMN (Em) The summer sun is fading as the (D) year grows old, (C) And (Em/C) darker (Am) days are (Em) drawing (D) near. The (C) winter (D7) winds will be much (Am) colder, (D) Now you're not (Em) here. (Em) I watch the birds fly south across the (D) autumn sky, (C) And (Em/C)one by (Am) one they (Em) disa(D)ppear. (C) I wish that (D7) I was flying (Am) with them, (D) Now you're not (Em) here. (C) Like the (G) sun through the (Dm) trees you came to (Em) love me, (C) Like a (G) leaf on a (Dm) breeze you blew (Em) away, Through autumn's golden gown we used to kick our way, You always loved this time of year. Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now, (D) 'cause you're not (Em) here, 'cause you're not (D) here, 'cause you're not (Em) here...
