Helge,

I think I remember you asking for this a few weeks ago.

I looked then with no success, and I can't help now. I wish I could.

Can you give any more information?

Anything and everything that you can provide about the song would help. Any indication as to who sang it would be a big help.

Zeb

It is, indeed on Eric Andersen's Avalanche album, released on the Reprise label in about 1968. It was also covered by McKendree Spring on their second album. I'm not sure where my copy is buried, but I still have it.

According to http://www.orangeshirt.org:8080/~aschmid/eric/albums/songbook1969.html, there is an Eric Andersen (note spelling) Songbook which contains "For What Was Gained."

Helge: You're hittin' right square between my Eric Anderson/ McKendree Springs collections. Between the two of 'em I own 9 LP's and can't help you a bit.

Sorry

From the back of my Avalanche album.... I'm also an Eric Andersen fan. Have you seen him lately?

FOR WHAT WAS GAINED
(Eric Andersen)

In my own city, where I come from
I had a friend we grew up as one
The best of our lives we made a vow
To stick it our some way somehow

How many times, we talked the night away
How many plans we made to hit the road someday
How many things there was to see, there was to be
How many things when you're young and free

No, he never had much family
Little brother and him, and mama made three
There was a time, there once was four
But he can't talk about that no more

And then one day a letter came
And on that day, I knew right there, our roads had changed
It called for him, to fight for us
He said "I ain't scared" but I knew he was

He looked so young in his uniform
And mama packed the trunk so old and worn
"It's a sad design, the Lord he weaves
If it was His will, it was meant to be"

A tear was hid as he stood and waved
And mama said "We love you son try to be brave"
Little brother he watched so proudly then
Said "When I grow up, I'm gonna be like him"

It was a Sunday morning little brother ran
Up the front porch cryin' with a telegram
The contents read, it was on a hill
It was in action, a boy was killed

Mama shrunk and fell and said "God help me understand"
And on her shoulder was little brothers hand
"I'll be alright, go on to your room,"
Thinkin' to herself "He'll be eighteen soon"

To die so young in an unknown land
Where the shame of blood is on no one's hand
And on whose heart will the guilt be bound
On the one who sent him out, the one who shot him down?

He was eighteen and he had to die
And to this day, God knows, I don't know why
To be so young, paid such a cost
For what was gained for what was lost?

Also for the record, I tried to e-mail Helge to let her know her snails had finally arrived, but the addy no longer works (with or without a space; I tried both ways).

What to do next?

Also tried the version with no first name; that didn't work either. However, she has posted as recently as September 2003 so she may see this.

Good to hear Eric Andersen mentioned. He is a wonderful performer and writer/songmaker. His album "In Memory of the Future" is simply a wonderful piece of work from this guy. He lives in Norway and I have had the pleasure of hearing him once. A pity he is not better known.

My mom played For What Was Gained for me when I was little when Avalanche first came out. I sat and read the lyrics while listening to Eric sing them. I cried. It is one of the most beautiful and moving songs ever written, and Eric is such a brilliant singer/storyteller. I have many of his records. He's a very underrated artist and I can only say that I'm so glad my mom was a fan way back then. I still play my vinyl copy of Avalanche from time to time, and For What Was Gained still makes me cry.

I sing this song to myself all the time,,, its relevant to more than just war if you expand it. And it does bring tears.

I do in fact have the McKendree Spring version on vinyl..   This song has strong tendency to bring tears to my eyes...   It could be possible for me to digitize from vinyl to MP3 if you are still searching for this to listen to.
