We did the English version, The fields Of Hythe And Rye... :-)

I'm gratified, of course, to hear the Kop singing a version at Liverpool matches. I've yet to glean the exact words being sung on the terraces, but, as a Liverpool fan, I feel I should do the research...

It is by the inimitable Malcolm Austen!!!!

NOT THE FIELDS ATHENRY
By M.Austen 1993

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Michael they are singing it again
And it just goes on and on
And I hate that blooming (bloody) song
I'm so fed-up with the fields of Athenry

ch.
Oh no not the fields of Athenry
If I hear it one more time I'm going to cry
They should ban the flaming (bloody) thing
There are far better songs to sing
I'm so fed-up with the fields of Athenry

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Mary why do you think that I'm in here
I hit the singer with my shillelagh
Now I'm bound for old Australie
But no more I'll hear the fields of Athenry

By a lonely harbour wall
I heard a young girl calling
To a prison ship and saying wait for me
Won't you let me come along
Before they start that blooming (bloody) song
I'm so fed up with the fields of Athenry

Yeh, Geogre,
What a thread of songs!
Will decypher when I'm sober,
Mike,
Sounds like another song entirely --- the more the merrier --- post the rest, if you ken the wurds.

The chorus to the parody of the fields of Athenry that I've heard starts:-

"Oh no! not the fields of Athenry,If I hear it one more time I think I'll die."

In the all night boozer at a quarter past eleven
Same old drunk is lying there on the floor
Watching the room spin by the rim of his beer mug
He throws up for an hour, then he staggers home alone

I wrote that, years ago! Mid 1970's I think...

Just the one verse, sorry!!!

Alison,
I've found Wild Mounting time in the DT - just where we'd expect to find it! Must learn Blickies, so I can point to things. Soon, I promise.

McGrath,
I agree with Alison, unless it's in the DT, in which case point us all to it.
Just heard a great parody of Ralph McTell's "Streets of London", at tonite's sess. I can remember (vaguely)

" How can you tell me that you're only
here for the beer and the wine;
Let me take you by the throat,
if you try to sing "The streets of London"
Maybe a thumpin'
Will make you change your mind.
The verses were even more apt; I'll try to track down the whole set, and post.
Rob

Wild mountain thyme? - you've surely come across the Kippers' "Wild Mounting Time" with the chorus:

Do you go Lassie go And will go together At the Wild Mounting Time Or will I get blooming Heather? Do you go Lassie go?

As with all Kipper parodies, the tune gets subtly distorted as well. For a time this made it virtually impossible to sig the original without someone cracking up thinking about this one.

Penicuik, as in just outside of Edinburgh? I have fond memories of the local rugby club ... Is there a local folk club too?
Cheers,

It woudn't surprise me if Andy's writing of the song was also prompted by Crawford's song. Tattie Bogle 'n' I sang both at Penicuik Folk Fest a couple of weeks ago, which prompted discussion of other "most murdered songs at sessions". I'm working on "The Murder of the County Down", but we need folk to contribute parodies of "Jock Stewart", "Carrickfergus", "The yellow's on the broom", Wild mountain thyme" etc.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MURDERED SONG (Andy McKean)
From: Max Tone
Date: 18 Oct 00 - 06:57 PM

THE MURDERED SONG
(copyright Andy McKean, 1998)

At a folk club in a toon, I heard a a young man singin',
Like a constipated donkey in distress.
An' wi' a finger in one ear, the noise he made was weird,
And he went from bad to worse wi' every verse.

Chorus
Oh dear, oh dear and michty me,
He was singin' way off key and far too high.
Like a dug wi'oot a bone, he howled doon yon michrophone,
As he murdered the Fields of Athenry.

He just went on and on; his song was never endin',
I'm sure the chorus had three extra lines.
And it wisnae very nice when he sang the verses twice,
Wi' the last one sounding mair like Auld Lang Syne.

The bugger widnae stop, and the audience were groanin,
And I wished I had a rope tae hang him high;
for I'd've buried him doon deep, in ab'low the coos and sheep,
In the middle o' the Fields of Athenry.

If you do the folk club rounds and this young man's on the billin',
Mak sure that you gie him a body swerve,
Or ambush him at his car, then evacuate the bar,
Before his voice attacks your every nerve.

I heard this from Andy at Aberfeldy Folk Fest in September; his rendition was prompted by another sessioner's version of Crawford Howard/Fintan Valaly's "No Man's Land (3)"- in the DT.
